The Kindness of Strangers
Monica mourns her mother, who was killed by the storm. She remembers the mass destruction on August 29, 2005, and asks Camille how one storm could take away her family, her college education, and change her life so drastically.

Slow Burn
In chapter 1 of Slow Burn, Bo LoFontaine says that after Katrina, he did things that were only for himself, and that he led a criminal life.
In chapter 3 of Slow Burn, Bo LoFontaine tells Chris Bowman that he was in the Bayou when Katrina came down. He says that he lost every to the storm, including his immediate family, his jazz club, and his instruments. His cousin Lonny Stills helped Bo recoup his losses from the hurricane by turning to robbery.
