			*If you're referring to Heath Ledger's Joker in ''The Dark Knight'', it is intentionally left unexplained. The Joker's stories were told in order to frighten the people he was about to mutilate and/or kill. The movies are a departure from the comics themselves. Additionally, this is pretty much the only instance in which the Joker's white skin and discolored lips and hair is actually make-up, and not chemical disfigurement.
			*If you're referring to Jack Nicholson's Joker (formerly mob boss Jack Napier) in ''Batman'' (1989), it is from falling into a vat of chemicals at the Ace Chemical Plant, which did a whole number of nasty things to his face.
