If only the [[Wikipedia:Coronal mass ejection\|CME]] portion of the solar flares were entering the atmosphere, then that might make more sense as CME's typically travel with speeds ranging between 12 and 1250 miles per second according to [http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view.php?id=55580 NASA Visible Earth].
