Not sure if this will be helpful in doing research, but it might come in handy at some point. When a Japanese name is translated into English, its order could be listed in an English environment (ei: the internet, books, etc...) as either "Firstname Lastname" or "Lastname Firstname". For example, if we wanted to talk about the founder of Shotokan Karate, we would be speaking of "Gichin Funakoshi". If you do a google on that name, you will find 142,000 hits. However, if you reverse the order to "Funakoshi Gichin", you will find 24,000 hits as well, many of which are unique to that reverse ordering of the name.

In the Japanese language, they order the names 'backwards' to how we would do so in English; therefore you will find names written both ways.
