	I awoke this morning on a cold, hard slab of concrete. I was in a side alley downtown, face down on the sidewalk. My head ached and my ribs burned like fire. I had vague memories of falling, and as I rose to a sitting position I felt a flood of pain rushing to my legs. My left knee hurt the worst, the sharp, stabbing pain shooting up my thigh and down my shin. I knew it wasn't broken, and as the doctor told me after I'd hobbled into the hospital on Main street, I'd bruised my ribs and fractured my tibia in three places below the knee.
