A computer is a fast idiot because it won't do anything unless a human being writes instructions, starting with the BIOS and operating system (Windows) and user programs (IE or Word, for example). We used to call them "executables," but now they're more commonly referred to as applications. All those things give a machine detailed, step-by-step instructions. Without them, your computer will make a great paperweight.
