An '''EVO''' (short for "Evolved Human") is a person with a special gene complex that grants him or her a superpower--an extraordinary ability not possessed by mainstream humanity. Although the superpowers vary greatly, telepathy, personal flight, the ability to project energy and enhanced strength, agility or senses are common EVO powers. |

The special gene complex creates a special protein that interacts with stress hormones, behavior-related neurotransmitters, immune system messengers, and other biochemical characteristics to produce chemical signals that modify the expression of susceptible genes. The special protein is a type of "genetic enhancer." |

For example, Claire Bennet's rapid cellular regeneration could be explained by the special protein having magnified the expressions of the genes responsible for normal cellular regeneration to the point that her body is able to spontaneously regenerate cells at an increased rate, completely healing physical injuries in a matter of seconds and giving Claire an incredible tolerance for pain. Similar explanations extend to all EVOs. To be an EVO, a person must have at least one of each of the dominant alleles. A non-EVO who is an "carrier" may either have two recessive "a" alleles, or two recessive "b" alleles. |

EVOs born from two non-EVO carriers are produced if one parent has two "a" alleles and at least one "B" allele, while the other parent has two "b" alleles and at least one "A" allele. Because of this, they could produce EVO offspring. Two EVO parents can even have carrier children. These carriers are produced by two EVO parents who have at least one recessive allele of the same gene. The cross likely to produce the most carriers from two EVO parents is, obviously, AaBb x AaBb, in which the offspring have a 7 in 16 chance of being a carrier. |
