Initially, Peter's understanding of his power was very limited, and it took great mental effort to "synchronise" his mind with the person whose ability he was after. After mimicking his first abilities by mistake, Peter was shown to become frustrated in attempting to mimic others, especially when the target was of a very determined or devoted mentality. Peter mimicked [[Sylar|Issac]]'s ability of [[Precognition]] passively whilst they were both in an opium induced state, indicating that a level of mental parity is necessary for the mimic to occur. He acquired [[Telepathy]] through pre-knowledge and deceit after stirring [[Matt Parkman]] into a state of cold rage- a state he knew well, indicating that emotional understanding (empathy) may be vital for the mimic to occur. After acquiring Telepathy, Peter often used that ability to force his target's minds into mental parity so as to acquire their powers.
