But, for the time being, he had to push it to the back of his mind. Today he had a mission. He was transporting an associate of Mr. Grayson. The man's name was Manny Franklin. Mr. Franklin was a local politician that was on Grayson's pay role. Because of some of his pro-mafia laws that he had tried to get passed, some people were after him. It was Jack's job to get him around town safely while he was in town.

"Can do." The elevator stopped at the fifty-first floor and the two men got out. Franklin led him to the office. Two guards stood at the door.
"Can do."

"I have an appointment." They nodded and let him in. Jack stayed outside, walking around a bit. While he looked like he was just wandering around, he kept his eye on the two guards, making sure that they weren't up to anything.

Ten minutes turned to twenty and twenty turned to thirty. Soon, it had been 45 minutes and still Franklin hadn't come out.

"One minute my ass..."

"What was that?" The guard looked up.

"Nothing...nothing..." The guards shook their heads and went down the hall and into a side room. Suddenly the door to Linderman's room flew open.

"Sure thing Mr. Linderman...anytime...it was nice seeing you too." Franklin waved and smiled into the room. Then, once he was out of view, signaled Jack to start heading towards the elevator. "We need to go." Jack looked at him. "NOW!" Jack got the hint and ran towards the elevator. Franklin shook his head and pointed to the stairs.

The two men ran down the stairs as fast as they could. "You need to get me out of the city."

"What?" Jack flew down three stairs at a time.

"Linderman knows."

"What?"

"I've been stealing money out his account for awhile now. He knows..."

"What?? Hey, I'm only here to transport you, not help you get away. I'm sure if I talked to Grayson, he would understand why I had to let you die." Franklin stopped.

"You wouldn't."

"Hey, if Linderman is Grayson's boss, and Grayson is my boss..." Franklin started breathing rapidly.

"But I'm paying you! Grayson wants a cut of the money that you get!"

"I'm sure you have enough on you. Just as I'm sure Linderman would be happy to pay me for killing the man who stole, what...thousands from him?"

"You don't have to kill him." Jack whipped around. A tall older man stood holding a gun.

"Mr. Linderman!" Franklin yelled.

"You've done a good job Jack, I'll have to tell Grayson to give you a promotion." Jack gave a nervous smile. "Now, why don't you go down stairs, and Mr. Franklin and I can settle this ourselves." He nodded his head. Jack started going down the stairs. As he got a few floors down, he heard a gun shot and a short scream. What had he done?

Character History

A Rude Awakening

2001

"Wake 'em up." The tall man nodded and punched the seated man in the face. The seated man grunted with pain, bringing him quickly into consciousness.

"Wwww-what...Where am I?" The man began to panic, trying to get up out the chair he was tied to. The shorter of the two standing men tried to place a hand on his shoulder, but the seated man violently shrugged it off.

"Settle down, settle down. Billy, what the hell was that?" The tall man shrugged "So...Miller. Do you remember anything?"

"Where am I?" Miller looked around. He was in a small room, possibly an office or study. There was a large grand piano in the corner and rows of book cases covering the walls.

"You're in your own house, don't you recognize it Jacko?" Miller gave him a clueless look. "You really don't remember anything, do you?" Miller gave him the look again. "Do you even know who you are?"

"No..." Miller paused, a confused look on his face.

"It worked..."

"What worked?"

"Uh...That blow to your head really must have messed with your memories. Well, take this as a second introduction. My name is Cole Grayson."

"Did...did I know you?"

"Of course, I'm your boss" Jack just stared at him.

"My boss?" Jack Miller looked around his back to his tied hands. "Why am I tied up?"

"This is the way I found you. All tied up. I saved you from that man over in there." Kole pointed to a large grey lump. After a little bit of staring, he realized it was a body. Jack was surprisingly calm with it.

"What?"

"Well, you left the job a few months ago, saying you wanted a normal life. I figured, let him go. Shortly after you left an...old friend of mine came searching for me, and found you instead. I guess that's just how it works when your in the mafia."

"I was in the mafia?"

"Well, sort of. You were my "driver". Well, why don't we get you out of that chair. You can come with us and I can explain your entire situation to you." Jack seemed nervous, but agreed. He figured that it would be better to go with these people than go it alone. Plus, he seemed to remember this person, so he must have known him before. The tall man reached behind his chair and cut the rope tied around his hands.

"This way" The man smiled. His teeth were yellowed and chipped, at least 4 missing.

"Sure..." Jack avoided him as he got up. Cole and the Smiling Man left the room. As Jack followed, he couldn't help looking down at the dead man. Who was he? The face seemed so familiar...

Two Years Later

2003

Jack was thankful that Cole had given him his old job back. His memory had yet to come back, and it was the only job he felt natural doing. It turns out that he was more than a mere driver. He was a carrier. He transported Mr. Grayson and other associates to and from intense situations. It was never a dull job. Plus, working for Mr. Grayson had introduced him to his daughter, Hannah. They had been dating for almost a year and half now.

Over the course of the two years living with Mr. Grayson, he had begun to wonder. What if Cole had lied to him? What if he was just using his amnesia to his own benefit?

But, for the time being, he had to push it to the back of his mind. Today he had a mission. He was transporting an associate of Mr. Grayson. The man's name was Manny Franklin. Mr. Franklin was a local lawyer that worked exclusively for the mafia. He was on Grayson's pay roll and was a key asset to the operation. It was Jack's job to get him around town safely today.

Jack hopped in the limo and headed out towards the pick-up point. He was scheduled to pick up Franklin at the JFK Airport. He pulled up at the front door. Immediately, Franklin ran out of the building and into the limo.

"So, Mr. Franklin, how was your flight in?"

"I don't have anytime for small talk. Is this car safe"

"Safe as it will ever be. The windows are bullet proof and double thick. The walls are plated and I have an MP5 up here by me." He patted the gun sitting in the seat next to him. "You're about as safe as you can get. Plus, the limo is unmarked, so nobody is going to recognize us."

"Good. Now...I need you to get me to Kirby Plaza. I need to talk to Mr. Linderman"

"Mr. Linderman?"

"The man Grayson has to answer too." Jack gulped. He had heard about Linderman. He supposedly had ties to every major mafia in the country, and had shares in many of the leading companies of the US. Grayson had said that he gone to him for money when Hannah was in the hospital. He said that she had gotten better almost immediately, but he was still having to pay Linderman. He also had said that Linderman had people...that could do "things". Cole hadn't specified what, but only that they did unnatural things.

"Well, let's get going"

The Meeting

"Okay. I want you to stand guard outside of the door. I trust Linderman, but you can't be to careful when it comes to your life."

"Okay. You're the one paying Grayson and I." Jack put on his sunglasses and grabbed a pistol he had stashed under his seat. He put a silencer on it, put the gun in his jacket, and jumped out of the car. He opened the door for Franklin and they both entered the building.

They passed the guards quickly as Franklin showed him a pass. The guard nodded and the duo head to the elevator.

"Okay, when we go up, I want you to make sure that you're ready at all times." Franklin nervously chimed.

"You expect trouble?"

"Well, it's more like I have no clue what Linderman wants. He could be happy with me, or pissed off."

"Can do." The elevator stopped at the fifty-first floor and the two men got out. Franklin led him to the office. Two guards stood at the door.
