Alternate Timelines

Hiro's power of Space-time manipulation allows him to travel into the past. This creates alternate timelines with differing events. It is uncertain whether a timeline which he travels back from ceases to exist, or splits off as an alternate reality. If he travels forward in time, he seems to enter the new timeline, though he alone remembers the old.

The Timelines

The following are events which are significant or which differ from timeline to timeline

Timeline SubPrime

Very minor, revised when Hiro goes back a second. In this Timeline Hiro possibly never realizes he can reverse time.

Timeline "Original"

(Exists until Hiro returns to the subway from Exploding new york.)

• Isaac is killed on explosion day, not 2 days before.
• There are no paint brushes in Isaac's arms.
• Ando stays in Japan, where there are missing posters for Hiro
• Nathan wins election in landslide.
• 9th Wonders comic is out with his story. This should be impossible, because it describes a past that is not Isaac's past, where Hiro and Ando travel to America. This inconsistency remains unexplained.
• Hiro arrested. Bomb goes off.
• After explosion: Never occurs, but probably similar to TL 2,except without Hiro/Ando

Timeline "Hiro"

(Created by Hiro's return to Toyko.)

• Hiro and Ando go to America
• Peter does not save Claire. Sylar kills Claire.
• Peter does not gain healing, telepathy, time stop or TK.
• Peter presumably captured by Haitian and HRG
• Hiro stabs somebody who looks like Sylar. Sylar heals.
• Somebody explodes. It is not yet determined who.
• Peter receives a scar.
• Somebody looking like Nathan is President, does pogrom
• Mutants are hunted down. "Walls" comic probably set here
• Peter helps raid prison, freeing Nicki/Jessica
• Hiro takes over Isaac's appartment, lays out strings.
• Hiro goes back to visit Peter, aborting this timeline

Timeline "Cheerleader"

(Created by Hiro's trip to subway)

• Peter meets Hiro, gains time stop ability.
• Peter told to save the cheerleader.
• Hiro meets Charlie, she is killed by Sylar

Timeline "Charlie"

(Created by Hiro's jump 6 months back.)

• Hiro and Charlie fall in love. Pictures go on wall at the Burnt Toast Diner
• Hiro teleports to Tokyo shortly before Charlie is to die.
• Sylar kills Charlie again.
• Hiro meets Ando at diner later in day.
• Peter saves the Cheerleader, gains healing, and Sylar's powers.
• Sylar does not gain healing, is captured by company
• Peter escapes company capture attempt using time-stop and TK.
• Hope shoots a bullet at Hiro.

Timeline "Bullet"

(Created by Hiro reversing bullet and jamming gun. It is effectively a continuation of Timeline Charlie, except Hiro would presumably have died without the time reversal.)

• Sylar kills Isaac 3 days before explosion, stabbing him with paintbrushes.
• Peter explodes, destroying NYC. It is blamed on Sylar.
• Ando is killed.
• Sylar kills Nathan, Candace, D.L. and others. (This possibly also happens in earlier timelines.)
• Sylar as President begins pogrom against mutants.
• Current-Hiro arrives 5 years later.
• "Nathan in Whitehouse" painting revealed to be Sylar as Nathan.
• Future Hiro is killed by Parkman's bullets.
• Sylar and Peter battle it out.
• Current-Hiro and Ando go back 5 years

Timeline "Stab"

(Created by Hiro's return from five years into the future)

• Hiro returns on mission to stab Sylar.
• Hiro meets Sylar in Isaac's loft after murder. (new)
• Sylar visits mom, she dies (probably in all timelines)
• As mom falls, Hiro freezes time. (new)
• Time unfreezes as Hiro stabs. (may be due to lack of concentration, or new Sylar power)
• Hiro attacks as Sylar tells him to, Sylar counters and freezes sword.

Notes and Problems

• The reversal of Hope's bullet is mysterious. Time goes backwards but that alone would not make the weapon misfire.
• It is uncertain if Hiro's one-second time reversal in his cubicle is an event which could have gone any other way. If it did not happen, and Hiro never learns of his abilities, the course of events would be markedly different, and there would be no timelines.
• When does Isaac paint "Nathan in the White House?" Is this always a painting of Sylar or could it, in some timelines, be a painting of Nathan?
• How does Isaac write 9th Wonders, describing events which are not in his past or current future. Does his ability include an ability to see different timelines? Does this suggest that some timeline shifts are themselves predetermined?
