''Perhaps the source of the new "mutations" is rapid and sudden subspeciation via human endogenous retroviruses. With special thanks to author Greg Bear, here is a possible theory for the mutations:''
In the laws of physics, there are four known fundamental forces. The four forces are: the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force, the strong nuclear force, and gravity. The strong nuclear force holds together positively charged protons and neutral neutrons in the nuclei of atoms. The weak nuclear force controls the radioactive decay of atoms. The other two forces can operate on larger scales. Electromagnetism attracts negatively charged electrons and positively charged protons to each other, creating atoms and molecules and all matter. Gravity governs all matter, drawing it together, creating the structure of every star system and the universe.

Scattered throughout the supposedly "junk" (unused) portion of our DNA are HERVs (Human Endogenous Retroviruses). Endogenous retroviruses are RNA-based viruses that integrate their genetic material into the host's DNA, becoming part of the host's genome. Endogenous retroviruses exist in various forms in nearly all living things. Human Endogenous Retroviruses are the genetic fossils of ancient diseases, viruses that have entered into human DNA and persisted there in a dormant state for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years. Along with natural selection, the evolutionary process is supplemented and mediated with the activation of a HERV.
There also exist a fifth force, a quantum potential force field that pervades all space. This force acts on us at all times. It acts on every particle in every atom in our bodies. And on every particle in every atom in everything else in the universe. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the universe together.

Within the human genome are many "mobile" genes that can copy themselves and transport other genes from one position to another. These are called transposons, or retrotransposons, and they may play a huge role in organizing and regulating our genome. Retroviruses bear a distinct resemblance to retrotransposons.
Every particle is accompanied and governed by a wave in this quantum potential field. This quantum potential wave is part of a physical force field, like a gravitational field, that affects the course of particles. This force does not decrease with distance, unlike other forces. A single quantum potential wave can control two entangled particles, no matter how far apart they go. So the quantum potential force violates both locality and independence. The quantum potential field conveys any change instantaneously over all of space because it carries information about the whole universe.

The specific HERV that causes human evolution contains information gathered from previous mutations of species on what is a beneficial mutation, and can express itself, if under stress. The so-called "Heroes" are the result of a programmed reshuffling of genes induced by a transfer of coded genetic signals. Their characteristics are largely determined by a kind of "meta-evolutionary" response.
Simply put, the quantum potential field is a continuous field throughout the universe that acts instantaneously throughout the universe. It is not created by or concentrated around matter, unlike other forces. Although the quantum potential force guides particles, it is not generated by them. Unlike the other forces, the quantum potential has no physical source.

A genome is capable of reacting to the outside environment through our immune system and stress hormones and chemicals. Endogenous retroviruses and mobile genes are frequently activated by stress hormones. The immune system acts as a kind of radar, informing the genome about environmental changes-and in the "Heroes", the stress of changing external and emotional conditions determines the changes.
Because the quantum potential force permeates all space and is not affected by distance, it in essence entangles or interconnects all particles. The universe is not a collection of objects, but a web of vibrating interconnected patterns governed by this quantum potential force. Just as space and time are interconnected as part of a space-time continuum, everything is connected as part of a single continuum. The entire universe is one single, complex entity. The whole universe is enfolded in everything and each thing is enfolded in the whole; and it is the quantum potential force that controls and connects all things.

Proposed changes in morphology are stored up in populations in a genetic "set-aside" area within each individual. A "library" of records of past adaptations is used to "judge" new phenotypic proposals within the genome, individually and across the species. Morphological changes are enacted in "suites" of mutually advantageous mutations. Possible variations are selected and edited extensively based on evidence culled from the environment by the immune system. The retrovirus creates a phenotype more suited to handle the perceived stress in the environment. In a sense, the genome is making an "educated guess" based on past evolutionary experience, giving the new variety of humans a better statistical chance to succeed by mixing and matching and even expanding upon varieties of past traits.
The emergent property of human consciousness is not only one piece of the unified universe, it is actually an expression of the fifth force as it interconnects with the quantum structures of the complex neurons of the human brain. Thus, the human mind is a projection of the unifying force in the universe and therefore has an omnipresent and universal aspect that can be labeled the "metaconscious". The metaconscious mind taps into and on a broad level perceives the entire quantum potential field. Most people are neurologically incapable of casually perceiving the metaconscious. However occasionally the metaconscious and the subconscious can interact with each other, which explains the rare clairvoyant intuition that every once in a while occurs in people.

The decision within a species to produce a new type of organism, or subtly modify aspects of an old one, is made using genomic rules which are similar to the rules that also allow clusters of neurons, including brains, to solve problems that confront organisms in the environment.
In Isaac Mendez the subconscious and metaconscious are permanently interconnected in an extraordinary way. Because of this, he can subconsciously "see" through the seemingly chaotic physical universe to the true order and nature enfolded in the universe. On a subconscious level, he observes this order and is a part of it. He is connected to all things and is unconsciously aware of the position and velocity of every particle in the universe at any given moment, enabling his subconscious mind to accurately predict their probable future interactions. In layman's terms, because Isaac has information about literally everything in the universe his subconscious can logically deduce actions that are nearly 100 percent certain to happen. This means his subconscious can determine the future history of the world for weeks to come. His mind can store this much information because along with the neuronal, the metaconscious mind also works on a quantum level that extends beyond the mere organic.

There's is essentially a master biological computer in each species, a processor that tots up possible beneficial mutations. It makes decisions about what, where, and when something will change...makes guesses based on success rates from past evolutionary experience. Stress related hormones can affect expression of genes and this evolutionary library of possible new forms responds to stress produced hormones. If enough members of a the species are under stress, they exchange signals, reach a kind of quorum, and this triggers a genetic algorithm that compares sources of stress with a list of adapations, evolutionary responses.
Just as various things in our subconscious are picked up by our conscious mind, some predictions that are especially notable to Isaac's psyche are picked up by his conscious mind in a subtle manner, i.e. he can visualize some predictions while painting.

Simply put, when a certain threshold degree of stress in a species is detected by a genome, that genome dials through its library of possibilities for enhancement, punches in a selection, and releases one of these viral junk DNA segments to make the adjustment.
Although the Heisenberg uncertainty principle accerts that it is impossible to look at a sub-atomic particle and know both where it is and where it's going at the same time with exactly 100 percent accuracy, Isaac's subconscious still calculates probabilities to a 99.999 percent level of likelihood. The 0.001 probability is only actualized by something that prevents the 99.999 probability as a result of Isaac's interference because of his vision. This means that unless Isaac tries to prevent one of his visions or makes others aware of it, the chances become 100 percent the prediction will happen.

The released DNA segments produce proteins in large volumes of slightly different molecular design to ensure success and avoid immunological destruction.

The Science of Heroes:

Perhaps the source of the new "mutations" is rapid and sudden subspeciation via human endogenous retroviruses. With special thanks to author Greg Bear, here is a possible theory for the mutations:

Within the human genome are many "mobile" genes that can copy themselves and transport other genes from one position to another. These are called transposons, or retrotransposons, and they may play a huge role in organizing and regulating our genome. Retroviruses bear a distinct resemblance to retrotransposons.

The decision within a species to produce a new type of organism, or subtly modify aspects of an old one, is made using genomic rules which are similar to the rules that also allow clusters of neurons, including brains, to solve problems that confront organisms in the environment.

Simply put, when a certain threshold degree of stress in a species is detected by a genome, that genome dials through its library of possibilities for enhancement, punches in a selection, and releases one of these viral junk DNA segments to make the adjustment.

The released DNA segments produce proteins in large volumes of slightly different molecular design to ensure success and avoid immunological destruction.

This same retrovirus infected Homo erectus in the distant past. It created Homo sapiens in a single generation, a new fitter species more capable of surviving the stressful life of the cave man. Now it is happening again.

Normally the genomes of individuals become part of an extensive, species-scale neural network that causes a species-wide mutation of a homogenous evolutionary adaptation. However, the Heroes have certain genetic sequences that creates the production of a specific stress hormone that causes the HERV to be activated in a way that brings forth an "individual evolution" and therefore a relatively unique mutation for each person.
