Authorities of the Canal Investigate the Death of Contractor

Panama Canal August 1st - 2 officials of Panamas National Guard, during a routine round, found the bodies of 5 civil engineers who were studying a forest region south of the Gatun sluices this is part of the expansion project of the Canal whose construction was planned to begin at the end of this month.

Officers Ansenio Nunez & Martin Guiza found the bodies at approximately 8:30 am. The eyes of each one of the deceased dripped a black and oily substance. At the moment the cause of death is stranger.

Officer Nunez, who was an official of the Police of the Canal Zone before the Panamanian Government got control of it in 1999, tells of local legends on the first attempts of construction of the canal for the French in the 1880 decade, 20,000 people died. Another 5,000 more when the Americans arrived to construct. The farmers say the canal is cursed. They think the people who are dead are a warning to stop construction on the third sluice.

Malaria was the common cause of death in the area 100 years ago, but there were no serious problems in the last decades. Doctor Peronila Alvarez, leader of the medical council of the Canal Authority, stated it firmly that there are no indications that these deaths have been caused to die by malaria or some other tropical sickness.

The local farmers, the ones who are already worried about the expropriations and the environmental impact due to the construction of the new sluice, say they aren't really sure. "There are a lot of strange things in the forest", a farmer says. "They are asking destiny for bad things to happen with the new sluice. I fear for my family"

At questioning a spokesman of the canal authorities, this is what he had to say"We are analyzing every cause possible of the dead and we'll give a report when we have more information on the matter.
