A "curandera" is a healer, but not a doctor. A proper translation might be more like "folk healer" or "witch doctor", one who uses holistic, shamanic or other methods outside of proper medicine.
The woman encountered by Maya and Alejandro in Guatemala appears to have some power, apparently either diagnostic or telepathic, that gives her some insight into Maya's ability.
