Butterflies are often symbolic of the cautions one must take with time travel. They are also symbolic of change and metamorphosis. Butterflies are also used to represent beauty.
Character History
The Butterfly Effect
Angela asks Peter if he has ever heard of "the butterfly effect". She explains that killing a butterfly today could wipe out a million people three years later.
I Am Become Death
Future Peter tells Present Peter that he (Future Peter) has stepped on too many butterflies.
Jump, Push, Fall
Hiro worries about the issues with time travel, and things that the butterfly effect will cause major problems.
Once Upon a Time in Texas
Hiro tells Samuel, "You told me I could right the wrongs of my life by stepping on the right butterflies. This is the biggest. It's Mothra."
Later, Samuel tells Hiro, "I've got my own butterflies that need crushing."
Brave New World
A monarch butterfly flutters by and lands next to Noah Bennet, who sits outside the Odessa Unity Summit on June 13, 2014. The butterfly enters the summit and flies past several reporters. It goes back outside and lands on an apple where Noah was sitting. It flies away just before a large explosion.
Later, a butterfly is in the Arctic, flying towards Malina, who is causing an aurora with what appears to be an eclipse in the center.
Under the Mask
A monarch butterfly in the Arctic flies near Malina and Farah.
The Needs of the Many
Malina comes across a monarch butterfly lying frozen in the snowy Arctic. She picks up the butterfly and uses her powers to revive the frozen insect until it flies off on its own. She then turns her attention to a large flock of butterflies lying dormant in the snow. She raises her hands, and they all flutter away.
Game Over
In order for Hiro to take Noah back in time, Noah has to first promise not to step on any butterflies.
Sundae, Bloody Sundae
After Quentin Frady turns out to be evil after Noah returned from the past, Noah comments that Quentin is the butterfly, referring to the fact that he inadvertently changed something he shouldn't have while time traveling.
In the year 9972, a butterfly lands on the hand of Miko Otomo for a moment before flying away.
Project Reborn
After traveling back in time to save Noah Bennet's life, Tommy Clark tells Noah that he couldn't stop the H.E.L.E. so he followed Hiro's instructions and followed "the tiniest thread, the smallest butterfly" to find a way to change the future. Tommy states that his doing this eventually led him to Noah who he saved as Tommy realized he held the key to saving the future.
