* That's because "Webisode" is not a namespace on the German Heroes Wiki, and you've asked that the "Neuewebisodeleiste" template be used only on pages where the namespace is "Webisode". You have two choices--first, you can ask Admin to make "Webisode" a proper namespace instead of just a pseudo namespace (I suggest contacting him directly on his talk page). Second, you can change your code to use the "Neuewebisodeleiste" template on any page that has the name "Webisode" in the title rather than as the namespace. Fun page

  • Should we make a fun page? (see Ryan's talk for more details)

Image Deletion Policy

  • I think as a policy we should refrain from deleting or tagging for deletion any images. Images are shared between the localized versions of Heroes Wiki so it's not immediately clear whether a given image is still in use or not. Storage space is plentiful, so we don't need to worry about the space images take up. (Admin 23:46, 31 December 2006 (EST))
    • Would it be advisable to create a "Image Parking Lot" page, who's sole purpose is to include an Image to take it out of the Special:Unusedimages list? --Orne 23:53, 31 December 2006 (EST)
      • Hmm... let's see what others think about it. Personally I think that unused images aren't really that big a deal so it doesn't matter if they show up in Special:Unusedimages, but I'm always open to other opinions. (Admin 00:19, 1 January 2007 (EST))
        • It certainly doesn't hurt to have them floating around unused, but it might not hurt to have an Island of Misfit Images that people can check before uploading a new image. Unused images don't bug me, but unnecessarily duplicated ones do, if only because it makes it that much harder to change should a change needed/wanted.--Hardvice (talk) 00:33, 1 January 2007 (EST)
          • Great points. I wasn't aware that so many pics are used on foreign language sites (thanks for the link, Hardvice). As for tagging images: is there any way to remove Special:Unusedimages from the special pages? If possibe, this would be beneficial for two reasons. 1, images that are used on other sites still show up as not being used. 2, some images show up there that are embedded, but used in a gallery, as a thumbnail, as a sidebar pic, etc. It's a very misleading page. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:25, 1 January 2007 (EST)

Archiving

  • Before archiving talk pages, are you checking the sections to make sure they dont have any recent comments? Just a reminder just in case. :) (Admin 22:04, 2 January 2007 (EST))
    • Yes - thank you for the reminder. The only recent comment is yours on the Sylar page, which I'm working on now. I'll go back and double check in a minute. Thanks! :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:07, 2 January 2007 (EST)
      • We haven't really discussed archival policy at all yet, so I guess it's a good time to start. My suggestion is that if we're going to archive we archive only entire sections that do not have any new comments since the cut-off date. So for Talk:Sylar for instance my recommendation would be to leave the entire original Brain Eating section until the point where we go to archive it and it's no longer active. Just taking the recent comments could become messy and doesn't preserve the context of the original comment. (Admin 22:12, 2 January 2007 (EST))
        • That's a great point. The previous discussion would useful. I'll go ahead and restore those old comments.

With the exception of the aforementioned comment about Sylar's diet, the other most recent comment was a congratulations on the Main Page from User:DeweyQ on Dec 23. Before that there wasn't really anything since about the 20th, and certainly nothing that wasn't relevant (mostly just talk btwn Hardvice and me on the Category talk:Plot Points page.

You're right - I should have checked with the other admins before archiving. I just thought the long pages could be cleaned up. Sorry if I stepped on any toes - didn't mean to! :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:22, 2 January 2007 (EST)

          • No toes stepped on. :) If anything I think it's nice you're cleaning up the talk pages. We'll probably have to setup an archive template to standardize the archives soon. Keep them orderly in a nice table... plus probably include a list of the discussions that are contained in each archive to make it easier to find a given archived discussion from the talk page. (Admin 22:25, 2 January 2007 (EST))
            • Is there a way to get a version of Special:longpages for the Talk namespace?--Hardvice (talk) 04:55, 2 February 2007 (EST)
              • That would be so helpful. I sat and looked for a way to search the talk pages easily, and couldn't think of anything. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:37, 2 February 2007 (EST)
                • Ok, I've created Special:Longtalkpages which should do what you're looking for. (Admin 09:46, 2 February 2007 (EST))
                  • Thanks, that makes searching so much easier! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:29, 2 February 2007 (EST)
                  • You are, as always, the man. Now, a new topic:

Archiving talk pages

  • Now that we have Special:Longtalkpages, when should we look at archiving talk for non-user pages? Is there a good cut-off? or should we wait until they start tripping the 32kb warning?--Hardvice (talk) 15:34, 2 February 2007 (EST)
    • That sounds about right. Or if the TOC is reaching the bottom of the page. However, on a case-by-case situation, we should probably leave some. For instance, the discussion over at Talk:Empathic mimicry is getting long (though not long enough to archive quite yet, I know). However, there's a possibility the talk might start up again after a new episode where Claude calls Peter an empath. We should probably just use good common sense in cases like those. Other than that, 32kb sounds like a pretty good guideline, and even comes with a built-in warnting! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:23, 2 February 2007 (EST)
  • Whatever we do, I think we should make sure the links to the archives also include a list of the sections included in that archive. This will make it easier to tell at a glance which discussions are part of that archive. (Admin 17:11, 2 February 2007 (EST))
    • That's a good idea ... I'll work on the ones that are already archived. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:16, 2 February 2007 (EST)
    • Okay, something like this? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:36, 2 February 2007 (EST)
      • That looks very nice, good work. That's just what I had in mind. :) (Admin 21:17, 2 February 2007 (EST))

Examples on Portal Pages

Discussion scavenger hunt: discussion moved to here

Timeline Deletion

Check out Category:Articles for Deletion. A few timeline-related articles, and the timeline category have all been nominated for deletion. I for one agree - we should either really beef up the individual date pages, or get rid of them all in favor of the main timeline. Thoughts? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:38, 9 January 2007 (EST)

  • With the exception of perhaps November 8th, I'd say get rid of the individual date pages in favor of a consolidated timeline. (Admin 19:02, 9 January 2007 (EST))

MediaWiki Upgrade

  • I've upgraded Heroes Wiki from MediaWiki 1.7.1 to 1.9.0. Let me know if there are any problems. (Admin 21:27, 12 January 2007 (EST))
    • Okay, I'm clueless. The only difference I see is (+141) and (+36) on the Recent changes page. Is that how many characters you added? Cool. What other differences are there? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:54, 12 January 2007 (EST)
      • Mostly bug fixes and small features. The full release notes are here, though I think there's much more info there than you want. You'll probably just notice some slight differences and improvements here and there. (Admin 21:58, 12 January 2007 (EST))
      • Something of interest: This version says it adds support for redirects to specific sections, so if we need them we can use them now. (Admin 13:28, 13 January 2007 (EST))
        • Cool. I think that was mostly an issue when we were trying to redirect to certain sections of the powers pages, but now that we have individual articles for each ... But cool function! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:51, 13 January 2007 (EST)
          • Weird. So I used a jump redirect (April 24th jumps to Timeline#April 24th), and the "back" button on my browser reported that I had been to Timeline 6 times. Very odd. So I tried it with another jump redirect: Brooklyn. Same thing. Odd, huh? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:49, 22 January 2007 (EST)
            • Strange. Doesn't happen for me, I just see one instance of Timeline in my back list. This is using Firefox 1.5. (Admin 20:52, 22 January 2007 (EST))
              • Not that it's a big deal or anything - it just surprised me when I tried to go back. And then again. And then... (I'm on Firefox 1.0 - I'm so last year!) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:57, 22 January 2007 (EST)
    • It says that there's an edit count field for each user, but I can't find it. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:49, 13 January 2007 (EST)
      • It's in the database; I dont think the developers have exposed it anywhere within the app yet, though. Let's just say you're #2. (Admin 21:18, 2 February 2007 (EST))
  • MediaWiki has been upgraded from 1.9.3 to 1.10.0. Please let me know if anything isn't working properly. Updated release notes for 1.10.0 are here. (Admin 02:23, 20 May 2007 (EDT))

Edit Summary Shortcuts

I added some shortcuts we can use for edit summaries to link people to the appropriate help article:

That way, if we make a correction for tense, we can enter an edit summary like "change Help:tense" and the user will have a link to explain why the change was made.--Hardvice (talk) 15:15, 24 January 2007 (EST)

How do you feel about moving the redirects out of the regular namespace and into the Help namespace? Otherwise it seems like we're polluting the Heroes namespace with help information. (Admin 15:31, 24 January 2007 (EST))
That'd work. I was just trying to simplify it a bit, since the whole text of the link shows up in RC.--Hardvice (talk) 16:10, 24 January 2007 (EST)
What a great help that will be - I go crazy trying to remember all the jumps. Thanks! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:51, 24 January 2007 (EST)

Prophecy Test Pages

Sooo ... The other 3 prophecy test pages that we've made are just ... sitting there. Are we ready to move on a new version, stick with the original, or delete the obsolete ones? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:11, 24 January 2007 (EST)

  • As I recall, here was the rundown:
Version Pros Cons
Prophecy Complete Long, but section headings helped a lot
Prophecy/test Looks good Columns very uneven. Maintenance a pain if anything moves or is inserted.
Prophecy/test2 Easier to maintain than test 1 Columns still very uneven. Consistent cell size impossible to maintain.
Prophecy/Test3 Looks even nicer than current page Incomplete
If that's a fair assessment, I'd say #3 is our best bet, but it will take some doing to transition.--Hardvice (talk) 00:55, 7 February 2007 (EST)
Very fair assessment. Test3 by far has the best layout, and is quite easy to maintain, in my opinion. I'm very willing to convert the whole page, but not tonight, and probably not until this weekend. If someone else would like to do it before then, that's fine, but it should probably be done before the next episode. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:10, 7 February 2007 (EST)
Actually, we might be able to do it with Find-and-Replace in an external editor. Lemme give it a go ... I need a break from the character appearances anyway.--Hardvice (talk) 17:02, 8 February 2007 (EST)
Wow, it looks really great. Nice work! — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:09, 8 February 2007 (EST)

Theories Pages

The theories pages are a bit of a mess. They need a good going through for grammar, links, standard formatting, and the like, but given how frequently they are edited, it's hard to do more than a section or so at a time without hitting an edit conflict. Right now, I'm settling for the occasional spell check, but the whole section feels very uneven and disconnected. Would it be acceptable to temporarily protect each page, add a notice that it's undergoing maintenance, and give each one a very thorough scrubbing? We could do it on an off day (what's our slow day, anyway?) and at night so it would be of minimal inconvenience.--Hardvice (talk) 00:48, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Sounds reasonable to me. Just whip up a template you can throw at the top of the page real quick announcing that this article is currently locked for cleanup and that it'll be available again in x period of time. I'd protect one page at a time and clean it before protecting the next so that we don't lockout all the theory pages all at once. As for a slow day, it looks like Sunday's the slowest day. The slowest time (independent of day) is around 5am EST. (Admin 00:55, 7 February 2007 (EST))
Okay. I added Template:Maintenance and a category so we can make sure no more than one article is locked at a time. I'll clean these guys up later in the week, once things slow down.--Hardvice (talk) 04:40, 7 February 2007 (EST)
Okay, I did the shorter ones (Items, Events, Powers). I'll do People and Misc tomorrow unless somebody else wants to take them on. I have discovered a downside in this plan: I'm so freakin' tired at this time of night that I can barely type coherently, let alone copy edit (so it might be a good idea for somebody else to give them a good looking-over). In addition to checking spelling and grammar and adding links, I tried to consolidate repetitive information, remove outdated information, remove information wholly irrelevant to the theory being discussed, and clean up the "Evidence" column (should be canon evidence only; other evidence goes in Comments) and provide citations for it. I added another new template (refneeded) for information for which we can't find a source (only one example so far, and I'm pretty sure it's just wrong). --Hardvice (talk) 04:20, 11 February 2007 (EST)
Don't be so hard on youself - the changes look great. I think everythings a bit more standardized, and hopefully people will follow suit when adding. It makes me want to go and add my theory that Meredith was trying to call Mr. Peterelli, not Nathan, about being Claire's father. :) — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:52, 11 February 2007 (EST)
I am clearly high on nutmeg or something tonight, as I keep making dumb mistakes. Therefore, I will not be editing the remaining theories articles, as that would be counterproductive, but anybody else is welcome to take a crack at them.--Hardvice (talk) 23:19, 11 February 2007 (EST)
Miscellaneous is done. Only the Behemoth rmemains. Also, I'm trying to keep on top of new changes as they come through, but I can see this becoming a semi-regular (monthly?) task, if for nothing else than to update outdated information.--Hardvice (talk) 02:01, 14 February 2007 (EST)
They're really looking nice, Hardvice. Another possibility for the Behemoth (less maintentance) is to subdivide into "Theories:Humans" and "Theories:Evolved Humans". Coincidentally, I'm counting 15 humans and 15 EHs currently in Theories:People. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:00, 14 February 2007 (EST)

Dashes & Other Characters

  • Hardvice, Ryangibsonstewart: I notice you change certain characters in the article text such as dashes from a dash into their HTML counterparts. What's the reason? Do these characters cause problems in any instance not being converted into HTML? The wiki does automatically convert certain characters (such as ampersands) into their HTML counterparts on the fly, so I'm just wondering why the articles are using the HTML? (Admin 21:16, 15 February 2007 (EST))
    • Not that I know of. But an emdash looks better (and is more consistent with print media) than a double dash, and a single dash is just a hyphen, and, according to typesetting conventions, shouldn't be used in place of an emdash. We could just paste in an emdash character instead of the escape code, but I have no clue how to type one directly from a keyboard.--Hardvice (talk) 21:21, 15 February 2007 (EST)
      • I change a lot of the hyphens into em dashes because, as far as I understand, a hyphen is usually grammatically incorrect when used to separate words. For instance, it would be wrong to say "Niki - a stripper - is a bad mother." It would be correct to use the em dashes: "Niki — a stripper — is a bad mother." A hyphen is used (among other things) to combine words: "Niki is an ex-con." "Peter has emo-style hair." I don't change them because I prefer the HTML over plain text, it's for grammar reasons. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2007 (EST)
        • Gotcha. I thought we were escaping regular dashes and that didn't make much sense to me. I guess we could make a template for it, but it would probably look even nastier. I wonder if there's some clever MediaWiki way to add them easily...hmm... (Admin 21:33, 15 February 2007 (EST))
          • If there were a way to auto-convert a double dash to an emdash (there is for Blogger, apparently), that would be awesome.--Hardvice (talk) 21:39, 15 February 2007 (EST)
            • Yeah, it'd be really nice if you could just type -- and it would automatically convert to —. I suppose we could make a template so we just type in , but that's six of one, half dozen of another. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:40, 15 February 2007 (EST)
              • Even a bot would work.--Hardvice (talk) 21:46, 15 February 2007 (EST)
                • Gotta love open-source. Ok, I changed the software so that -- now displays an mdash (--). (Admin 22:03, 15 February 2007 (EST))
                  • Whoah, that was fast! Excellent!--Hardvice (talk) 22:11, 15 February 2007 (EST)
                    • It's going to make the next MediaWiki upgrade a little interesting, though. :) I'll have to generate diffs for all the code I've changed and then reapply them to the new version. Not too much work, but more than just a regular upgrade. (Admin 22:35, 15 February 2007 (EST))

ImageMap extension

  • FYI if there's any use for this extension that provides support for image maps, let me know and I'll check it out. I know of one instance where it would have saved Hardvice a bit of time cutting up a picture. :) (Admin 05:31, 1 March 2007 (EST))
    • That seems pretty cool. I like that it can define circles and especially polygons. It doesn't seem to work in Opera, though, and I know we have some Opera users. Other than that, it looks nice. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:00, 1 March 2007 (EST)
    • It's certainly clever and it would save us from needing a bunch of extra images. It also would have made the portal templates a lot more streamlined, since we wouldn't have had to mess with all of the fixed positioning, invisible text links to get the images to link, but that's largely water under the bridge at this point. I guess it's something to think of the next time a need crops up, but I have to say it sounds nice, even if just for adding links to whole images.--Hardvice (talk) 13:32, 1 March 2007 (EST)

Captchas

  • Because we're starting to get some automated spam bot registrations here, I've added captchas to the user creation process to help protect against these spambots. Granted they haven't actually gotten spam through because of other precautions we take, but it's still a nuisance having them create all those accounts. Since it's only on account creation it shouldn't be a huge deal since people will only have to go through it once. If you see any problems, let me know. (Admin 13:10, 10 April 2007 (EDT))
    • Looks like the captchas have done a nice job stopping the spambot registrations. Plus we're getting new legitimate users as well, so they seem to be working well. Very nice. (Admin 17:58, 11 April 2007 (EDT))

Caching

  • I'm testing out what benefit we see with Squid caching on the frontend. As long as nothing breaks the test will be running through the weekend including Monday and Tuesday to see what kind of benefit we get Monday night during the weekly post-episode traffic surge (which was actually enough last week to slow things down a little right after Heroes aired on the east coast). If you see any strangeness with the site, please let me know. Also with the way it's setup there shouldn't be any cases of stale articles since the cache is still checking for any changes each time. I switched it over just a little while ago, but it will take up to 6 hours for everyone to be running on the cache. (Admin 12:40, 4 May 2007 (EDT))
    • The caching appears to be helping. We've had even more traffic this week than last and the load on the server seems to be much lower this time around. A correction to my last comment, it doesn't check for changes to articles every time, but it doesn't need to since MediaWiki will tell Squid to purge an article from its cache when it's modified. The caching has definitely helped with serving the images so now we don't have to let a fat Apache process (with PHP) sit around longer than necessary handling returning the images, Squid will just handle them itself when possible. (Admin 17:13, 8 May 2007 (EDT))
      • Awesome. Sounds like this will be very helpful.--Bob 17:17, 8 May 2007 (EDT)
      • Do you know how Mediawiki handles changes to includes? If we change a template, does it automatically mark all of the articles which include it to be purged, or is there a chance we're caching the old version? Or does it actually compile the articles on the fly as far as included content is concerned (it doesn't seem like that would work for included categories and such). Not so much a concern as idle curiosity...--Hardvice (talk) 18:38, 8 May 2007 (EDT)
        • Changing a template invalidates all pages from the cache that transclude that template (see here). I also believe that in general articles with transclusions are compiled on the fly albeit I believe with certain internal caching optimizations. I know that a side-effect of transclusion is that it increases load on the application, but I don't think it's appreciable until you're a site like Wikipedia. (Admin 18:54, 8 May 2007 (EDT))

Patrolling and new sysops

I must say that with the addition of our new sysops, it has been so much easier and less daunting to visit the recent changes. I have given up on trying to look at every change made to the wiki, as I was able to do in days past, but that's inevitable with growth. Quick question--is there any way to un-patrol an change? I'm just thinking I sometimes accidentally patrol something that needs to be fixed, but don't have time to do the fixing right then. It'd be nice to un-patrol the change if possible. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:27, 9 May 2007 (EDT)

  • Is it possible to reach a patrol link without going to recentchanges (like from the history or from another diff page)? And is it possible to "un-patrol" an edit? — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:26, 25 May 2007 (EDT)
    • I don't either is possible currently with the code. How helpful would either feature be if implemented? (Admin 15:37, 25 May 2007 (EDT))

Searching without redirecting

Is there a way to negate the search feature from redirecting to a page that is the word you are searching on? In other words, if I want to search for all pages that use the word 'Clairvoyance', I am hosed if I type it in the search box, because it doesn't return the search results for that word....but rather, it redirects to that page. Is there some special way to negate doing a redirect when wanting to search via common words that exist as page-redirects? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 05/15/2007 15:39 (EST)

upload file?

Hello, I'm a relatively new user! I'm a 9W user and I've recently put together genealogy charts for several Heroes families tracking the special abilities trait. The thread with attachment is here. I'll edit the charts throughout season two as we get more information. I'd like to upload them into the wiki but I need some advice. I currently have the charts in a powerpoint file and in a condensed pdf version. What would be the best format for the wiki? Can I upload a file or only images? There are 12 pages. Should I add a section to Power heredity or create a new article? Thanks for your help! --Longx225 01:38, September 2, 2007

  • Hey, Longx225. Check out the pages in Category:Image_Maps. There is already some geneology documented there. It might be possible to also include some information as to the existance of special abilities into those pages as well. (Admin 01:49, 2 September 2007 (EDT))

Favicon?

Do we have one in operation? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  12:31, 8 September 2007 (EDT)

  • Yep, we've had one in place for a very long time. The image currently in use is . (Admin 12:34, 8 September 2007 (EDT))
    • Well then, it doesn't show up. At least, not for me. --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  12:35, 8 September 2007 (EDT)
      • For the majority of people it's showing up. I checked the logs and your browser isn't even checking to see if this site has a favicon. Have you disabled it in your browser or something? (Admin 12:38, 8 September 2007 (EDT))
        • Um.... no..... :S What do I do? --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  12:41, 8 September 2007 (EDT)
          • Actually, I just tried adding something to the page HTML which might be necessary for IE 7 to check for a favicon. Try forcing a page refresh or close and reopen your browser and see if it downloads the favicon now. (Admin 12:43, 8 September 2007 (EDT))
            • Doesn't work for me still. I mean, it doesn't really matter to me or anything... just curious. Thanks for your help! :D --   Lost Soul   talk  contribs  13:28, 8 September 2007 (EDT)

Heroes Wiki upgraded from MediaWiki 1.10 to 1.11

  • I've upgraded all versions of Heroes Wiki from MediaWiki 1.10 to 1.11. Please keep an eye out for anything that may have broken and enjoy some of the new features. Release notes are here. (Admin 23:01, 29 September 2007 (EDT))
  • I also added MediaWiki:Edittoolstop which is just like MediaWiki:Edittools except it will show up right above the textarea instead of below it. (Admin 23:12, 29 September 2007 (EDT))
  • Some interesting changes include:
    • Easy access to your edit count in Special:Preferences.
    • When selecting the destination filename during image uploads, if there's already an image with the name you've selected a thumbnail of it will be displayed.
    • now accepts a border option to create a border around the image.
    • <gallery> will accept HTML attributes now.
      • I noticed that when scrolling through the diffs, you can patrol needed pages. Before, you could pretty much only access the patrol link through RCs. That makes patrolling so much easier (especially after a new episode)! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:06, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
        • Noticed that. Also, small scroll bars appear for horizontal scrolling on long diffs. --Bob 11:02, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Unused images

  • I'm noticing we have a ton of unused images over the last few episodes. I went through the uploads for Fight or Flight and made sure everything that could be used on existing articles was used. This is actually a pretty quick project (particularly if you do one episode at a time), so I'm not sure whether it merits setting something up in Current events or if we should just knock it out ourselves. Once we're done using the obvious ones, we can look at Unusedimages and see if whatever's left just needs to be AFDd or what.--Hardvice (talk) 05:26, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I know there was earlier concern that some of the unused images are actually used on the other language sites. Is there a way for us to see which ones are used? If so, we need to move those to the other site.--Bob (talk) 05:32, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
      • Can they be moved, or are the images centralized?--Hardvice (talk) 05:38, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
    • I think after we do an initial check and use as many images as possible (good work, Hardvice), there's nothing wrong with putting something in the current events--a note at the very least. It's too bad special:unusedimages doesn't allow the images to be transcluded like special:newimages ( allows the first twelve images, for example to be seen on the page, but doesn't actually count as being used). I'm particularly bothered by some of those images that have been on the site for months and months and haven't even been touched. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:44, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

the power to rename pages.

Who has the power to rename pages? Two of the apartment pages in "Portal:Apartments," namely Caitlin's apartment and Isaac's apartment, are mis-titled as such: Issac's because (correct me if I'm wrong) it is referred to as a loft in-universe, and Caitlin's because it is referred to as a flat in-universe and would be called that in Irish English, if I am not mistaken. I'd like to rename these/see them renamed to reflect the in-universe nomenclature but I don't know how/who can. --SacValleyDweller 01:43, 26 October 2007 (EDT)

  • First, start a discussion about renaming in the talk page or add the Template:rename to the page. Second, all you have to do is move the page. At the top, next to the history tab, there should be a move tab if I'm not mistaken.--Bob (talk) 01:49, 26 October 2007 (EDT)
  • Anyone has the ability to rename an article using the "move" link at the top, however since it's a significant change it should usually be discussed on the article's discussion page first as Bob said just to make sure there's consensus (or at least not disagreement) on the change. Since article names are prominent mistakes are often caught early so if a page has been named a particular way for a while there could be a good reason for it so it's best to discuss first. To draw attention to a rename proposal there's Template:rename that can be included () at the top of the article to encourage people to check the discussion page. (Admin 01:52, 26 October 2007 (EDT))

Changing Usernames

Is it possible for you to enable the changing of usernames? I capitalised the 'X' in my name, but the system automatically capitalised the 'E' too - however I can't change my name. Nothing major, just looks a bit... out of place. Apologies if this is already an option, but the 'my preferences' page will not allow me to do it. Thanks. (eXplicit 16:45, 31 October 2007 (EDT))

  • Changing usernames is something I have to do at the database level, MediaWiki doesn't provide a user facility for doing it. However the first letter of any article/username will automatically be capitalized. However you can still use User:eXplicit and it will work since it will automatically capitalize it when someone clicks on it. If you still want it changed, let me know. (Admin 17:01, 31 October 2007 (EDT))

RC Patrol

  • Question for the administrators: Do you think it would be helpful to have an additional potentially larger group of people who, while not having administrator control, have the ability to patrol the recent changes? Basically people that can be relied on to at least identify obvious problem edits and patrol the good ones so we know it's been looked over by someone with some experience on how things are done here? Thoughts? (Admin 17:43, 31 October 2007 (EDT))
    • I know that the large amount of patrolling needed is in the fan powers and theories. So, if we actually decide on deleting the former, then I wouldn't see a problem with what we have right now. But with the influx of visitors and new users coming in, I think one or two more "patrollers" would be just fine.--Bob (talk) 02:06, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
      • iawtc. It might not be a bad idea to give it to a couple of the people who do a lot of clean-up work on Theories and Fan Powers (like Moonkea--not sure who spends much time on Theories) specifically, since those are definitely problem areas.--Hardvice (talk) 02:10, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
        • Sorry I missed this conversation. Yeah, I think it might be a good idea to have one or two people to focus on theories and the other articles we sometimes skip. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:55, 12 November 2007 (EST)

a bewildering mis........something. help?

ok, I ask Bob why his sig changes seemingly daily just to satisfy my curiosity (not wanting one, just wanting a few word explaination), and I get Miami making an addendum on the sig help page and my sig going on the fritz for some reason. woopse, help? *dumbfounded* --SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:47, 12 November 2007 (EST)

  • Sac, check your talk page messages. I'm trying to help you fix it. For some reason, looks like you didn't edit many talk pages since we fixed the sig initially. I had gone back and updated the pages for you, so unless you checked Special:Recentchanges you might not have noticed.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:51, 12 November 2007 (EST)
  • There's nothing wrong with your signature. It's just a little...long...on the talk pages. It can easily be fixed by creating a page called "User:SacValleyDweller/autosig", then typing in and saving the page. Then you can go to your preferences and change the nickname to "". Check raw signatures, save, and you're good to go. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:52, 12 November 2007 (EST)
    • looks like it's fixed now.--SacValleyDweller (talk) 01:55, 12 November 2007 (EST)
      • Nope, not yet. I updated the previous change for you, but I'm leaving this one for now so you can see it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:56, 12 November 2007 (EST)
        • gonna do the recomended. I wasnt requesting a variable sig in the first place... I hope I dongt get one now. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 02:03, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Heroes Evolutions

  • So, as a recreational HeroesWiki user, I would be assisted greatly by a "Heroes Evolutions latest scoops" section on the Main Page. I was wondering how the Admins and such thought about this. Random guy 01:17, 21 November 2007 (EST)
    • Sorry for the mess on your pages, I didn't know this page existed, I undid my mess. Random guy 01:24, 21 November 2007 (EST)
      • No problem. I think it's a fine idea. I wouldn't mind seeing a small section that said something like: "Latest Heroes Evolutions activity: see corinthianlasvegas.com" or "Heroes Evolutions latest scoop: new text message" which points 360 followers in the right direction. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:18, 21 November 2007 (EST)
        • That is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. Random guy 06:24, 21 November 2007 (EST)
          • Would you like to write it? We can take care of adding it to the Main Page (since the code there is a bit tricky, though feel free if you'd like to try it). But if you want to write the text, it should probably go in a template called "Template:LatestEvolutions" or something like that. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 06:41, 21 November 2007 (EST)
            • I wouldn't know how to even start. I would feel much more comfortable if someone more competent did it, I think.Random guy 01:11, 24 November 2007 (EST)
              • It'd actually be very useful, I check Hana's messages and such daily only to find out there is nothing new. I'd like to see this. :D--Riddler 01:52, 24 November 2007 (EST)

Cascading protection and DPL

  • The only MediaWiki help I found about cascading protection are this page on Wikipedia and this page on MediaWiki. The latter says that cascading protection protects all templates and images that are used on the page to be given cascade protection, along with the page itself and all of the templates and images used in that page; the former only discusses transclusion in terms of pages, so I'm not sure if transcluded images count here or not (0.). A couple other questions come to mind: 1. Does cascading protection lock subtemplate elements/images even if they are used in a noinclude section of a used template? (I'm not sure...) 2. Since the current version of DPL marks all pages it searches through as "used", cascade protecting a page using a wide-ranging dpl search could conceivably protect most of the existing pages of the Wiki as a side effect. Has anyone tested if this is true? (I'm not sure, but I'm interested to know.)--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:21, 4 February 2008 (EST)
    • Ok, so basically if you go to edit an article and the page shows up in the list of templates/articles that this page includes then they will be protected by the cascading protection. So, yeah, this isn't very good for pages using DPL. For instance in Current events the cascading protection ended up protecting Adair Tishler even though she doesn't actually show up anywhere on the page. (Admin 13:59, 4 February 2008 (EST))
      • Ah, thanks for a couple of the answers. So the answer to 1. should be no, since subtemplates in noinclude sections will not be included; the answer to 2. is then yes, since DPL marks all pages it searches as "used" all those pages are protected. What is the answer to 0? (are used images protected using cascading protection? I think the answer is yes, but the help is confusing).--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:20, 4 February 2008 (EST)
        • Try uploading over Image:Xkcd_lisp.jpg. The description is locked, but I don't know about reuploads. Try it out. (Admin 14:23, 4 February 2008 (EST))
          • It doesn't let me, says "Upload warning. Protected page" and there's no way to override, so I guess I got my answers. Kudos.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:35, 4 February 2008 (EST)

Patrolling

Is anybody still patrolling edits? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:06, 8 February 2008 (EST)

  • I do it, but I'm not a admin, so I suppose it doesn't really count. --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 17:11, 8 February 2008 (EST)
    • Yeah, I'm talking about the patrol log. I think most people patrol most edits (theory edits excluded) which is awesome...but our list of unpatrolled edits is pretty crazy right now... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:16, 8 February 2008 (EST)
      • Remember, only administrators are able to actually mark edits as patrolled. That was my reason for asking a while back whether I should setup a new group of consistent and reliable editors whom we could add people to more liberally than we do administrators and would be able to assist in patrolling edits. (Admin 17:20, 8 February 2008 (EST))
        • I like that idea. And I'm a reliable and consistent editor. *hint hint* --Hero!(talk)(contribs) 17:22, 8 February 2008 (EST)
        • I'm still very much in favor of allowing some users to be able to patrol edits, especially the theory pages. I patrol what I can, but I can't get everything, and I really don't like even looking at the theory pages very much. Perhaps we should continue the discussion off the wiki. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:03, 9 February 2008 (EST)
    • Being my last semester in school, I've buckled down and really tried to stay focused (that and work), so I kind of browse now and again and patrol any pages that are randomly edited. But in January, I was clearing out the unpatrolled list to the point where we didn't have any. Just when school started, I'm on overload (18 hours of school and 36+hrs of work). Maybe on Spring Break I'll clear a bunch out. I'm still for having someone just patrolling (mainly theories and fan stuff).--Bob (talk) 17:38, 8 February 2008 (EST)
  • With the new patrollers group, I'm thinking that we're also going to have better summaries. When faced with a mountain of unpatrolled edits in the past, I've often either skipped reading episode summaries on character pages, or accidentally marked them patrolled just to get them out of the way, trusting that the editor has done a good job. Now, I feel less pressure to whittle down a huge list of unpatrolled contributions, so I also feel like I can do a much better job at quality control. Kudos on the new group, and kudos to the new group members for demonstrating great editing skills! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:59, 13 February 2008 (EST)
    • Yeah, I think the amount of work required for patrolling was disproportionate to the number of administrators. Since we don't really need more administrators quite yet having another group of people who could help patrol edits seemed like a good idea. It looks like it's going to work out very well. (Admin 03:08, 13 February 2008 (EST))
  • Newbie question....stuff like profanity, or obvious spam, etc...do we have a policy for how that is dealt with, removed, reported, etc? Is that part of the Patroller responsibility, or should those types of things be deferred to Admins, and is there a way to defer issues to the Admin staff of sensative or a private nature, that they only can see, kinda like PMs on messageboards? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/5/2008 17:11 (EST)
    • Stuff like profanity or spam, you can censor and warn the user on their user talk page... if they ignore your warning, you should notify an administrator so they can review the situation. You can leave a message at Heroes Wiki talk:Administrator Portal or on an administrator's user page. If it's an urgent or delicate matter, you can e-mail an administrator privately. You can contact Admin at admin -at- heroeswiki.com, and the others may also give you their e-mail if you ask for it. If anyone wants to talk with me, fellow patroller, privately you can PM me at IMDb or 9th Wonders, or you can reach me currently using qqf1ipy02 -=at=- sneakemail.com (that's a temp redirect e-mail which I'm changing once a month).--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:39, 5 November 2008 (EST)
      • I don't use any kind of instant messaging system. You can email me at ryangibsonstewart at heroeswiki dot com. (I think you have that address, HDS.) I check Heroes Wiki just about as much as I check my email, so you can also leave me a message on my talk page, even if the message is just a reminder to check my email. (I don't mind getting double messaged.) If there's something inappropriate or offensive on the wiki, anybody can rectify the situation. However, in the end, disciplinary action for profanity, vulgarity, vandalism, and that kind of stuff is an administrator's job. One of the jobs of a patroller, though, is to unofficially be the eyes and the ears of the wiki and to let the administrators know of anything you might see as a blockable offense. Great question! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:45, 5 November 2008 (EST)

I'm still keeping an eye out. There's a disturbed individual RGSlicksnuts who keeps messing around with entries.Tarot 20:52, 1 August 2011 (EDT)

Changing categories

Hi there, I'm an administrator of the German HeroesWiki. We have a lot of articles with wrong categories. Now my question, is there an "easy" way to change them into the right category? Or do we have to change every article one by one. Thanks for any help. --Muffin84 06:51, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

  • It depends on how the categories are assigned. If they are actually listed on the page, then yes, each one will have to be done individually. (A bot would help greatly with that task.) However, if the category is assigned through a template, then it's just a simple switch in the template. For instance, on this wiki, the category Category:Images of Elle needed to be switched to Category:Images of Elle Bishop. Since almost every image in that category is assigned through template:image-screenshot, it really just required one change to the template, and then a few stray images which had the category manually assigned. On the other hand, Category:Heroes 360 Images needs to be changed to "Category:Heroes Evolutions Images", but since most (or all?) of the images in this category are manually assigned, it's a much larger task. Yuck. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 07:46, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
    • They are listed on the page. How is a bot generated? Didn't find anything helpful so far. --Muffin84 08:16, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
      • To be honest, I'm not very familiar with writing bots, only with what they can do. You'd have to ask Admin about that. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:17, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
  • Can you go into more detail about what the wrong and right categories are? It may help me get a better idea whether the changes could be automated. (Admin 11:52, 25 March 2008 (EDT))
    • Well, the more I go through our categories, the more I see it's a pretty big mess... So I guess it can't be automated as far as I know at the moment. I assume a bot is changing for example articles with category:A to category:B, or something like that. I'll see how we decide on each cateogry and if needed I get back to you. Thanks anyway you both. --Muffin84 12:32, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
      • You know, the German wiki is listed as having 1,471 articles. At a quick glance, the categories don't seem to be too far off. For instance, most of the comics are in the right category, and it looks like the character category is pretty correct. Right there, that eliminates much of the problem. If the problem is simply changing a category name, I'd be more than willing to help out, just let me know. If the problem is that some articles are assigned to the wrong categories (which is what it sounds like), I can help out, but I'd need some help with translation. Just let me know what you'd like me to do, and I'll certainly help out. This weekend is particularly good for me, especially since new Heroes content is scarce. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:24, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
        • Yeah, I'd be happy to help out, too. I've gone through a lot of articles in the past adding the language links and if there's something you need help with over there that doesn't require me to translate text from English to German, I'd be happy to help. (Admin 14:29, 25 March 2008 (EDT))

Spoilers in the Theory space...

I posted this over at Ryan's talk page, but i need an answer sooner that when he might get on:

Spoilers don't belong in the Theory space, right? If they don't, could you guys look into adding a warning on the theory editing guidelines? see here for what I saw, dint want to see, and hope ain't true. --SacValleyDweller (talk) 17:21, 18 April 2008 (EDT)

  • Correct, the ONLY place spoilers are permitted is on articles in the Spoiler/Spoiler_talk namespace. (Admin 02:44, 19 April 2008 (EDT))

MediaWiki upgrade 1.11.2 -> 1.12.0 tonight

  • I'm planning to update MediaWiki from 1.11.2 to 1.12.0 late tonight. I've been testing it for a while on a staging site and it seems to be working well. They made some major changes to the parser between 1.11 and 1.12 and in the process broke the functionality for several extensions we use. Fortunately it's possible to configure the new version to use the old parser so we should be ok. Keep an eye out tomorrow for any odd behavior and let me know if you find any problems. (Admin 16:33, 1 May 2008 (EDT))
    • Thanks for the heads up. That's great news. Are you upgrading the DPL version too tonight?--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:02, 1 May 2008 (EDT)
      • I prefer not to change two things at once. Remind me again this time next week if I haven't updated it already and I'll update it then. (Admin 17:06, 1 May 2008 (EDT))
        • Ok, cool. It's a good idea to make sure everything is working with one change before making a second.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:07, 1 May 2008 (EDT)
  • #ifexist isn't working. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:35, 1 May 2008 (EDT)
    • I had updated the ParserFunctions earlier today, but it looks like the version doesn't work properly. I backed it out and I'll test it some more. Thanks for noticing! :) (Admin 00:20, 2 May 2008 (EDT))
  • It's upgraded now. Let me know if anything looks out of place. (Admin 00:54, 2 May 2008 (EDT))
    • Looks good now. Hey, I like the drop down menu options for deleting a page. Very cool! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:56, 2 May 2008 (EDT)
      • I tracked down the bug in the newer version of ParserExtensions that broke ifexists, too. I fixed it in my test environment, but I'm going to wait for the maintainers to fix it upstream so that I can be more confident that there's active development going on with it. Otherwise I'm just going to stick with the current version. This is the comforting thing about MediaWiki being open source... I know that if something is broken with the new version that there's a good chance I can fix it myself. (Admin 22:30, 2 May 2008 (EDT))
  • I'm not sure if this is just me or even if it's server related but the wiki seems to be slightly slower today.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:14, 5 May 2008 (EDT)
    • Everything looks good to me. One thing you can do is view the page source and at the bottom will be an HTML comment "Served in x secs." that tells you how long the server took to render the page. If the number there is very small and it's still taking a while to load, it's often some external issue or issue with the client. (Admin 17:19, 5 May 2008 (EDT))
    • I just dug a little deeper and it looks like you're intermittently experiencing in the realm of 10-20% packet loss around your second hop, so that's why it seems a bit slow for you today. Possibly an issue with your Internet provider. (Admin 17:24, 5 May 2008 (EDT))
      • Thanks for checking. I guess my ISP is doing maintenance today. I'll contact them if it doesn't improve in the next couple days.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:39, 5 May 2008 (EDT)
  • I don't think #pos is working. According to MediaWiki:Newarticletext, a new page that has "disambig" in the title is supposed to show a disambig button, but it doesn't. I tried it in the sandbox, and it's not working there either. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:50, 6 May 2008 (EDT)
    • I think it's working correctly, though I don't know if the behavior changed (read: was fixed) in the newer version. Check the Sandbox now. First off, PAGENAME is a MediaWiki variable, so it's within and not {}. Secondly the string you're matching cannot be at the beginning or else #pos will return 0 which #if interprets as false. (Admin 23:04, 6 May 2008 (EDT))
      • Thanks. I guess because the disambig button had been working in the past, I assumed that the code was correct. Thanks for catching the mistake. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:09, 6 May 2008 (EDT)
  • Image redirects don't seem to be working. (See discussion.) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:52, 6 May 2008 (EDT)
    • What do we use image redirects for exactly? There's a "feature" that supposedly makes redirects work in the Image namespace, but they worked before... so maybe whomever changed it considered the old behavior to be "broken". I just want to make sure we're using them in a logical manner before I dig into the code and "fix" it myself. (Admin 00:01, 7 May 2008 (EDT))
      • When we have a large image and a cropped or smaller version of that image, the small version normally has a redirect to the large image so if it is clicked on from a thumbnail gallery or sidebar, you go directly to the larger image. It comes in especially handy for the cropped images used commonly in image maps.--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:05, 7 May 2008 (EDT)
        • Image maps are a great example. The prophecy article is another example of a cropped image linking to the larger image (especially the paintings). -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:20, 7 May 2008 (EDT)
          • Ok, I'm working on fixing it now. (Admin 00:21, 7 May 2008 (EDT))
            • Any progress? Are you still planning to load the new DPL version tonight?--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:11, 9 May 2008 (EDT)
              • I haven't gotten a chance past that first night to try to fix the code, but I will work on it again. DPL I will still try to update tonight, feel free to bug me again later in the evening to make sure I don't forget. :) (Admin 09:27, 9 May 2008 (EDT))
                • Alright; here's a reminder.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:34, 9 May 2008 (EDT)
                  • Ok, it's updated. Could you check to see anything broke? (Admin 19:54, 9 May 2008 (EDT))
                    • Have you updated anything? DPL version isn't showing (it should in the new version) and image redirects are still broke.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:19, 9 May 2008 (EDT)
                      • Have I updated anything? What, you think I was pulling a prank on you or something? :) I had to flush the PHP cache, check it out now. I haven't gotten another chance to look at the image redirect code quite yet, so that's still broken at the moment. (Admin 20:25, 9 May 2008 (EDT))
                      • Heh, I thought something was up. Anyways, DPL seems to be updated now and working as good as before. Sadly, I'm not seeing any performance improvement from the upgrade. However, the new features could help out some--I've yet to try them out.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:19, 9 May 2008 (EDT)

Warning

  • WARNING READ: The main page is gone and replaced with a hackers page the same thing happened to wikipidea.com (now org) and we need to stop|- this from happenning to other wikipidea pages. p.s. i got here through the email Mail others to let them know--Autobot2 11:18, 3 April 2009 (EDT)
    • Not sure what you mean. The main page looks fine to me and I haven't noticed any recent edits to it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:28, 3 April 2009 (EDT)

Image redirects

Any progress on re-enabling them?--MiamiVolts (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

  • I had spent some time working on it last week but wasn't able to find where the problem was. Then I looked at it again just now and found the problem pretty quickly. Try out the redirects now, they should work. (Admin 18:50, 15 May 2008 (EDT))
    • Yes, they're working! Nicely fixed, Admin.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:29, 15 May 2008 (EDT)

Webisode checklist

Can some administrator please add Template:NewWebisodeChecklist to the appropriate place in MediaWiki? Thanks.--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:26, 14 July 2008 (EDT)

  • Ok, I'll be more specific...The following two lines need to be added to the switch statement in MediaWiki:Newarticletext:
|Webisode=Newwebisodebuttons
|Webisode talk=<div class="plainlinks" style="background-color:#C0C0C0;border:2px outset #9999bb;text-align:center;padding:2px 5px;width:150px">[ <font color=#000000>New Webisode Checklist</font>]</div><br />

--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:37, 15 July 2008 (EDT)

  • --10:44, 15 July 2008 (EDT)
    • Done. Thanks for saving me the time of reading the template in order to add it. ;) Template:newpage_webisode might need some more content, though. It looks like it only sets up the infobox currently. (Admin 10:47, 15 July 2008 (EDT))

This is an AMAZING resource!

Thanks to the admins & all the contributors for making Heroes Wiki such a wonderful place. I check back here whenever I miss details.

Such an unbelievably consistent and methodical (e.g., extensive checklists) way of keeping up with the show and associated mythos like the comic books and ARG.

Time after time, it boggles my mind how quickly summaries, extensive plot details, and loose discussion pages get organized into neat profiles!

It looks like you put a lot of collective time & energy into keeping Heroes Wiki vital and updated, and I appreciate it a LOT. --Torley 00:13, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

  • Thanks, Torley. There are a lot of really dedicated contributors at Heroes Wiki who put in a lot of time and effort to making the wiki an accessible and comprehensive resource. I'm glad you like it! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:34, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

Id like to say thanks to, Im a huge heroes fan, so much that i missed 6 episodes and i still didnt quit. finding out that there was a Wikipedea dedicated to heroes only was like heaven. I can only get on the computer at school and this is an amazing website. Thanks. --Autobot2 10:36, 22 April 2009 (EDT)

A Question

Last episode, didn't Sylar obtain Empathic Mimicry as well as lightening? The only reason I'm asking this because I noticed that on sylar's list of powers Lightening was ther but not Empathic Mimicry. -Rainman 14:59, 20 November 2008 (EST)

  • That's really a question that's better for a different talk page, but I don't know of anything that says Sylar absorbed empathic mimicry. In It's Coming, Arthur told Sylar that he has to access his empathy in order to absorb powers without killing. I don't think he said anything about a new power or Peter's power or anything, just that he needs to learn to be empathetic. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:18, 20 November 2008 (EST)
    • Oh, I just thought that since he was able to copy Elle's power through empathy that it was empathic mimicry he was using. Is what Sylar did in It's Coming really different from Peter's power? Maybe Arthur was trying to say Sylar had Peter's power all along. -Rainman 17:33, 20 November 2008 (EST)
      • If Arthur meant that, he certainly wasn't very clear. I think the biggest difference between what Sylar did with Elle in exam room 1 and what Peter does (or used to do) is that Sylar had to actively concentrate to take the power. Peter absorbs the power, even if he doesn't want to. The powers may be very similar (like Candice's illusions and Matt's telepathic illusions), but they're not the same power. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:48, 20 November 2008 (EST)

Edit: I now understand that I posted this in the wrong section, my apologies..-Rainman 17:33, 20 November 2008 (EST)

  • No apologies needed. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:48, 20 November 2008 (EST)
  • I see, so it's sort of like Empathic Aptitude..-Rainman 10:20, 21 November 2008 (EST)

Featured Articles

I'm just wondering why we don't have featured articles on this Wiki, as there are featured articles on Wookiepedia, Memory Alpha(well, it's an Article of the Week) and even Wikipedia. I think that it would be a great way of highlighting our best articles, and really make the Wiki loook like Wikipedia (not that it has to, obviously, I just think it would be a great idea). I realised that there mightn't be much space on the main page, but I think that it could go where the "Did you know" box is, or below that but before the categories in a wide box that wouldn't take up too much space. Thanks for your time, and I'm sorry if this has been suggested before, but I couldn't see anything. Yours, Paul.--IotV 09:44, 17 January 2009 (EST)

  • It's been discussed before. See the prior discussion in the archives of the Main page talk: thread 1, 2, 3 and 4. When you search for discussion related to articles in the mainspace, just remember to click on the checkmark for the "Talk" namespace to search the discussion pages and archived discussion for the main namespace.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:24, 17 January 2009 (EST)
  • I'm not opposed to a featured article of the week, I just don't think we need it. The main page is very full, and a featured article would be just one more thing to add to it. Plus, I like that we're not a carbon copy of Wikipedia and some other wiki sites. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:36, 17 January 2009 (EST)

Hacker

IM NEW AT THIS PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF SLOPPY I THINK THE HACKER MAY BE BACK PASWORD CHECK GONE AND WAS KICKED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF READING A PAGE PLEASE SAVE THIS WEBSITE PLEASE--Autobot2 13:02, 15 April 2009 (EDT)

  • What hacker are we talking about? I'm not familiar. Is it a user who is vandalizing? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:24, 15 April 2009 (EDT)

I think it is somone at my school, because after I got my log in I tried to get to this page website and instead of this mainpage I had a page that showed a bunch of photo graphers and other menue options. Also, at one point inthe media center , all of the computers had a virus. One more thing, i think he used my log in so block me out please.--Autobot2 09:42, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

  • I don't see any evidence of vandalism related to this user account. If you're concerned that someone has stolen your password, you should change it from the Preferences page. --Ted C 09:55, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

I just created a new login and a new email but neither my main page nor my discussion page are showing the new to heroes wiki page. By the way this isnt important but someone had the idea for a page that discusses problems in the show and i think that would be a perfect place --Abouthacker 10:07, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

  • This doesn't sound like a problem coming from the HeroesWiki server. Since you seem to be the only user affected, whatever is causing your problem is apparently on your computer. You should probably run a virus scan or something. You might also check to see if you have the same problem if you try to access the site from someone else's computer. --Ted C 15:57, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

I dont use my own cumputer, I log in at school on many different computers that are sort of connected. If I dont worry about it at my school will this website stay safe? Or should I not log in? By the way, if someone trys to change my messages even myself will it change or does it stay permanit? --Autobot2 12:49, 20 April 2009 (EDT) Also, can someone watch my user page so that if anything that is not me appears it can be blocked? I still want to list my therioes though.--Autobot2 12:52, 20 April 2009 (EDT)

Watching segments

I looked up sylars disscusion page and I saw that there were a bunch of segments, I think that if someone were watching a segment than it would be a pain to get to it if you didnt remember the name.I thnk that we should put both an edit button and a watch button on each one so if one were to be changed it would be easier to spot, instead of looking and finding out that a minor edit happenned on the top one when your watching the bottom. I also think you should make it so that changes are highlited so that it would be even easier.P.S. we found out who the hacker was and they got into may GA credit recovery, not heroes.--Autobot2 09:51, 23 April 2009 (EDT)

Happenned again through gacredit recovery but they changed my password.Should i stop logging in? I love this website!--Hawkeye2 13:01, 14 May 2009 (EDT)

The thing just went to that internet cant show page hold on, changing all of my emails and every thing password for other pages that are me yatta hiro peter sylar.--Hawkeye2 13:05, 14 May 2009 (EDT)

Admin suggestion

Hello

  • Can I suggest that user: Irony be recommended to become an administrater. He is very helpful, he will answer and assist any queries you put to him. He is a patroller at the moment (a very good one I may add) but I believe and I am sure others will as well that his work rate and attitude on Heroes Wiki merits an administrater place.

This is just a suggestion, it will be your decision, I am just casting my vote.--Danko 16:48, 18 May 2009 (EDT)

Expansion

Anyone is free to expand this page User:Danko/Claire's Victims as it could become a proper page (my first one!), it could do with more victims, kills + images. Thanks all. — By Danko at 14:49, 7 June 2009 (EDT)

  • Thank you, Danko. This page is really for issues that only administrators can deal with, not for advertising a page for anybody to expand. Thanks for understanding. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:46, 7 June 2009 (EDT)

SpaceBro14

I didn't know which administrator to come to, so I decided to come to all of you at once. User:SpaceBro14 has deleted the content from at least (from what I can tell) five character pages, among them, Angela, Meredith, and Elle. I won't change them back so that you can see what was done, I just want to see the user banned, because this CLEARLY was no accident. He wrote for the edit summaries "removed all content from page," even daring to put "replacing all content with 'ass'" for Micah's page. I hope to see this person be punished in some way, thank you, Skullman1392 02:48, 1 July 2009 (EDT)

  • Yeah, his recent edits have indicated that he wishes to be banned. I say we honor his wish, but we need someone with access to the banhammer first. --Piemanmoo 02:58, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
    • Thanks for the heads up. As he was already asked and this is flagrant vandalism (multiple mainspace pages), I blocked him immediately and will be leaving a message on his user talk page.--MiamiVolts (talk) 03:27, 1 July 2009 (EDT)

Deletions

User:Ryangibsonstewart has been deleting character season history pages and restoring the histories on their page to include every episode (most notably Rachel Mills). I was going to restore them as they were (with season summary and the link to the episodic summaries) but the episodic summary pages were deleted, and I couldn't restore them. I think the season summaries greatly reduce the character's page, making it easier for someone viewing it to follow. Could you please restore the pages to the way they were, because I don't think episodic summaries are the best option. Thank you. --Skullman1392 23:30, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

  • They're either going to be episodic summaries on the character page or on the archive page. It doesn't make very much sense to archive a character's history if they've only appeared in one season. The point of archiving is to reduce the amount of text on a page from one season in order to make room for a new season. If Rachel continues to appear in the iStories or the episodes or graphic novels, then I'm all for archiving her page. But until then, it doesn't make sense to have a short main page and direct people to a second page to read her history. It's best to keep the history all on one page. Archiving because you don't like episodic histories is not a reason to archive. Archiving to make room for a new season is a reason to archive. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:35, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
    • And if someone wants an overview of the character's history, they can't get that? If its archive and someone really really wants to know what happened to a character in every episode, then they have both options. Besides, Rachel's page is obscenely long at this point. And generally, characters who appear in more than on season have at least one season summary on their page (Meredith, Maya, Adam, Monica). I'm ok with one season summary an then episodic summaries after that for some of them, but it shouldn't be all episodic. --Skullman1392 23:47, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
      • It sounds like your issue is more with the structure of the pages than with the issue of archiving. It sounds like you are using the archiving to get rid of episodic summaries and only have overviews, perhaps in a prose format, as some other wikis do. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:53, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
        • I don't know what a prose format is, but I guess that's right. I don't mean that I want all overviews, just more than there are after you're editing tonight. If you want to know womething major or significant about a character, it's likely it will be in the summary. If we used no summaries and you want to find that detail it could take forever to find. I just feel that the summaries keep things simple. --Skullman1392 00:01, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Admins? Verdict? --Skullman1392 19:02, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
          • Why don't we set a standard number of headings by the end of a season that will satisfy a character history page? Say, 20? --Radicell 20:49, 3 October 2009 (EDT)

Canon or not?

Hello, on the latest iStory, my character Tevor Tanaka was used. I'm slowly starting to help out and edit his Wiki entry but I wanted to run some questions and thoughts by the admins first before jumping in. I created an extensive backstory for the character on the Heroes Survival Game bio section and I did my research to make sure it doesn't contradict anything from the show but integrates well and threw in a cruise ship-load of references. So here's my questions:

1) May I add everything I wrote from the HSG bio, since it's technically canon, now?

2) In the trivia section, I am considering listing all the references I've made to the show, other shows, movies, pop culture, etc. but I'd like some advice/help in devising a proper way to show it all. Mrmichaelt 20:49, 24 September 2009

  • Technically, the information on Heroes: Survival is considered a secondary source. I don't think the admins have ever really gotten together about this issue...but my personal opinion is that since your character was chosen to be in the iStory, we can supplement the info on Trevor Tanaka's page with information Trevor's profile page at H:S. I think the information should stay primarily on Trevor's page and not infiltrate the wiki. That's just my opinion, though, and not an official stance from the administrators. Maybe some of the other admins have an opinion they want to share. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:59, 24 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Just noticed this message. I agree with Ryan, if a H:S character appears in an iStory or GN, my opinion is that the information from the respective H:S profile should remain primarily on that character's page, and the source noted. My thought is the H:S is a secondary source if the character is used in an iStory/GN, but it isn't necessarily a static source and the content of a H:S profile can change at any time the fan adviser wishes to change it.--MiamiVolts (talk) 22:45, 3 October 2009 (EDT)

Blocked users userpages

Since there are some users who have been permanently blocked, such as Adamhiro and his sockpuppets, can the sysops delete their pages? They won't be editing them, and they take up space needlessly. I'm sure there are more users like that, but no other names come to mind right now. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 20:12, 21 October 2009 (EDT)

  • I am in favor of deleting pages like Adamhiro's. I wouldn't make it a blanket statement or a policy that we always delete all the subpages of every person who is blocked. But I think there are some clear examples where it's a good idea, like with Adamhiro. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:35, 21 October 2009 (EDT)
    • And don't forget User:New Day as well. --Radicell 03:54, 22 October 2009 (EDT)
      • Would it not be better, instead of just deleting blocked users's pages, we could have a page with a list of userpages to be deleted. If it is a page that someone else is using then they may not want it to be deleted so would be unfair to do so. What do you think? --mc_hammark 05:59, 23 October 2009 (EDT)
        • We could nominate for deletion the pages of any blocked users. That way, we're not making a blanket statement. Plus, if anybody is using the pages, they can express their desire to keep the page around. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:49, 23 October 2009 (EDT)
          • I nominated a few of Adamhiro's pages for deletion. (Somebody else can get the rest.) I also realized that Adamhiro's block will end in December. Deleting pages should only happen for (some) users who have been permanently blocked. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:27, 23 October 2009 (EDT)

Editing System messages (German Heroeswiki)

Hi there, I'm an administrator of the german Heroeswiki. I'm trying to edit the templates for new pages, but it doesn't work properly at the moment. I managed to include the whole System Text (newarticletext). Now if I create a new page, the buttons are showing. So far so good. But when I create for example a new Webisode, the "New Webisode" Button isn't showing, just the regular ones (character, events etc....). When I create a new Portal, the corrext Button is showing (only the template there isn't created at the moment). I haven't created all the templates just yet, but the ones for the webisode i did. Can someone help me, did I miss something specific?! Thanks for any help. --Muffin84 09:14, 3 December 2009 (EST)

  • That's because "Webisode" is not a namespace on the German Heroes Wiki, and you've asked that the "Neuewebisodeleiste" template be used only on pages where the namespace is "Webisode". The code would look something like . If you need more help from me, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:21, 3 December 2009 (EST)
