Interview with JG

Questions for JG

  • Hey there JG! First off, just wanted to say that I like the work you do for 9thWonders and Tim Sale's website! I like the "feel" that you give to the sites. And thanks for all ya do (the actual questions are next)! 'ROESian
    • If you were able to do anything you wanted for a career and make a decent living doing it, what sort of work would you do?
      • Would it be anything different than what you are doing now? Or, if you are doing exactly what you want to do already, what would be the best or dream project with which to be involved?
    • Are there any new promotional items you're creating for HEROES for this year's Comic-Con in July (which people like me might hafta find from places like ebay...)?
    • What's a new diversion/job/hobby that you'd like to attempt?
    • Last, what's your favorite font to use? Or, if you have more than one favorite, depending on its application, what are your favorite fonts to use, and when/why?
    • The graphic novels normally just credit the lettering as "Comicraft". Does Richard Starkings participate in lettering at Comicraft? How large is the team at Comicraft (Comicraft's website lists 6 people)? Do other letterers assist you in lettering any of the novels? You are listed as part of Comicraft's away team--does that just mean you don't work out of Comicraft's Los Angeles HQ?
    • When did you gain the nickname, Mr. Fontastic?
    • Are there any new font and bubble styles that you developed for the Heroes novels? Does the methodology you use to select font and bubble styles differ greatly for Heroes than your other work?
    • Do you have any favorite font/bubble designs from your work in Heroes and elsewhere?
    • Active Images is listed as being a library for your commercial fonts. Is it a separate company? Is it run only by Comicraft?
    • Balloon Tales, presented by both Comicraft and Active Images, has a cool tutorial on lettering. Are you and Richard Starkings big influences on each other's work? Who would be your biggest other influence in lettering?
    • What assistance do you provide, if any, in the animation of the graphic novels?

Heroes novel questions

    • In Moonlight Serenade, the lettering on the sign for the retirement home is partially obstructed by a bush and saxophone player. Is that supposed to be "Retirement Village" or "Retirement Villa"?
    • In Faces, Part 1, the bar has what appears to be an electric sign that is obscured by a caption Comicraft added. What did the sign read as before it was obscured?
      • That's an artist question, not a lettering question. But in any case, the neon sign simply says "Bar"--check the video. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:04, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
        • Ah, cool. I can't see the video on my computer cause the plug-in required doesn't work for Windows2000, but thanks for answering my question.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:07, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
    • War Buddies, Part 7 has a slightly humorous error, which was later corrected, in one of the writings for Linda's notebook where an address scrolled off into the air. How long did you have to caption that novel?
    • In novels such as Wireless, Part 4, Hana holds paperless e-mail texts in her hand and whirlwinds of text swirl around her. Were all those text additions done by Comicraft? And if so, what kind of direction were you given?

9thWonders questions

    • If you had the freedom/authority to help the 9thWonders website "evolve" with the show, what changes would you make to the site?
      • A thread just for fun brainstorming by 9thW members about how 9thW could "evolve" is here (and the password's "shanti", minus the quotation marks) - do you think that TPTB will have plans for 9thWonders to grow or change along with the show in ways similar to those suggested in that thread?
  • Who else worked with you to create 9thWonders.com? Was the site your idea? When did your participation in the site end?
  • When did the idea for 9thWonders.com originate? Was the original idea for it to be a message board?
  • Did you ever get that 9thWonders.com lunchbox you refer to in your interview with Fabrice Sapolsky? And are you still getting phone calls from when NBC put your info online?
