In 1747, Adam Monroe marries Maria in Milan. She bears him two sons, but Adam learns that he does not like children. Instead, he leaves his children with "two sacks of coin" and heads to the "new country" to begin again.
Trivia
- In 1747, Milan was under Austrian sovereignty, and had been since the 1713 signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. Milan would remain such until 1796 when Napoleon conquered Lombardy.
