About
New York City is one of the most influential cities in the world. It is an international center for business, trade, the arts and culture, and international diplomacy. Founded by the Dutch in 1614 as "New Amsterdam", it was conquered by the British in 1664 and received it's current name. The city grew in importance as a port due to its natural harbor. It was the site of important battles of the Revolutionary War, and it served as the capital of the United States after. In the 1800's, the city became the center of immigration to the United States. In 1925, New York became the most populous city in the world. The biggest event in recent times in New York was the September 11th terrorism attacks which killed 3000 people and caused the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
New York is a center of culture. It is the home of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, Carnegie Hall, the United Nations building, the New York Stock Exchange, and many other centers of business and culture. Many writers and performers live in and around New York, making it a prime location in literature and film. The neighborhood of Harlem is a mecca of African-American culture. It also has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel.
