In reading A Matter of Trust, it is clear to me that this needs to be renamed "mist mimicry". The book only refers to his power as smoke twice, and both times are when it first manifests, and both times use the term "mist" as well. However, the book talks anout him becoming "mist" 25 times, and often much more explicitly. "He turned into mist and floated up into the sky." "Then, turning into mist, he flowed across the sanctuary." "Mauricio pushed open the door and let it swing closed behind him, turning into mist and slipping through the gap." There are a bunch more with that same language. Most telling in my opinion is, "He was visible in daylight because sunlight reflected off the particles that made up his mist form." The only time I see that it s referred to as smoke is, "In the faint reflected glow from the still-burning headlights he could see a cloud of white smoke or mist gathered around him. No. Not around him. The cloud of smoke was him." I think this should be renamed "mist mimicry". -- 22:57, 21 November 2015 (EST)

* If mimicry is still okay as the ebook would be near-canon with the episodes still being the primary source, then I am okay with "mist mimicry". ** The books are near-canon, and the episodes are the primary source still. He mimics mist in that he is still able to see, hear, and speak while in mist form. He is also able to move where he wants while in the form. I dont think "mimicry" is the word in question, but "smoke" is. Mauricio only refers to himself as smoke during the first transformation, in which he also refers to himself as mist. Every other time (25 in all), he refers to himself as mist. -- 09:29, 22 November 2015 (EST)
*** I agree then that the term "mimicry" is an appropriate descriptive term and not in question, now that I have some context for your quotes from the ebook. As for "mist mimicry", I am not opposed to the new name and I like the alliteration (mi-), whether intentional or not... As for sublimation, wikipedia's article describes "sublimation" as the ability to "transform into a gaseous, mist, or fog-like form", so I think a redirect from sublimation to this ability as "mist mimicry", after the rename, would be appropriate.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:56, 22 November 2015 (EST)
**** A redirect is a good idea. And no, the alliteration is not intentional. Just looking for the most accurate name possible. :) -- 15:29, 22 November 2015 (EST)
***** I've added the redirect of sublimation, which is my preference for the ability's name as it is a more generalized ability name. I'm still not opposed to mist mimicry, though, as I think it also applies to the ability (not because of the alliteration).--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:10, 1 December 2015 (EST)

Source/Explanation
A Matter of Trust says "He turned into mist" several times.

Ability name?

  • Was this ability explicitly named Smoke Mimicry anywhere in Heroes? (Admin (talk) 20:35, 27 September 2015 (EDT))
    • I don't see it named anywhere. I would say that this is a descriptive name. I'll add the template... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:29, 27 September 2015 (EDT)
      • How do we know it's smoke and not fog? (Admin (talk) 23:53, 27 September 2015 (EDT))
        • We don't know. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:13, 28 September 2015 (EDT)
          • So the name is speculative then. It really shouldn't be smoke mimicry, however considering that this minor character may never return the harm in the speculation is probably minimal enough. (Admin (talk) 00:16, 28 September 2015 (EDT))
            • How about gas mimicry? Very vague name that does encompass whatever the substance the priest turned into, be it mist, smoke, fog, whatever. -Sincerely, Thrashmeister » talk- 08:20, 28 September 2015 (EDT)
            • Good news! (SPOILER AHEAD!) You can read about it on Carlos LaCamara's Twitter account. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:45, 28 September 2015 (EDT)
              • Ah, interesting. Well, hopefully we'll get some better information in the coming episodes then. (Admin (talk) 12:32, 28 September 2015 (EDT))

Rename

  • Starting a new topic for the rename itself. It's been a few episodes and unfortunately we have no additional information as to the exact nature of his ability. It may be smoke, it may be vapor/fog, it may be something entirely different. Unfortunately any name right now is still speculative and according to our naming guidelines we really should change it to Father Mauricio's ability until we have something more concrete. (Admin (talk) 21:31, 8 October 2015 (EDT))
An excerpt for the next eBook included with Vengeance, Part 1 includes the moment where Mauricio discovers his powers. I quote: "...he could see a cloud of white smoke or mist gathered around him. No. Not around him. The cloud of smoke was him". So I think the name is fine, as it explicitly refers to it as "smoke". -Kon (talk) 21:37, 8 October 2015 (EDT)
