WAP

very cool! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:54, 18 September 2008 (EDT)

  • Awesome. I remember a while ago I had to use Google's webpage converter through Gmail, but I've been using Opera Mini, and the normal page loads fine. But very cool.--Bob (talk) 18:31, 18 September 2008 (EDT)
    • It's rather nice. Very handy if you are browsing with a lynx viewer as well.--MiamiVolts (talk) 21:56, 18 September 2008 (EDT)
      • It's something I wanted to see for a long time back when I had my Blackberry since the site didn't look too hot on it, but with my iPhone the regular site looks perfect so I don't personally need it anymore. I figured it would be nice for people who are out and wanted to look something up quickly to have a method to do it. I was surprised MediaWiki hadn't put in any WAP support earlier, but it looks like the code I added here will be integrated with MediaWiki in an future release. (Admin 22:26, 18 September 2008 (EDT))
        • Wait--I don't understand the ins and outs of how the coding works, but are you saying that MediaWiki is going to use the code that you added? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:59, 19 September 2008 (EDT)
          • The code was written by the people at HAWHAW presumably for their http://hawpedia.mobi website which provides WAP access to Wikipedia. Since their code is open source it looks like Wikipedia is incorporating it right into the MediaWiki project itself. The code I pulled was from MediaWiki's source code repository which has a lot of hard coded references to Wikipedia in it (since it looks like their primary goal was to get it running on Wikipedia and then to extend it). So I took a copy of the same code and modified it for Heroes Wiki. I think in time they'll take the code, make it more generic, and then distribute it along with MediaWiki releases to provide every MediaWiki installation with a convenient WAP view.
