When I protected Heroes Wiki:Site Statistics using cascading protection, is that what made this template become protected? (Oops!) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:17, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- Yep. :) (Admin 23:23, 3 February 2008 (EST))
- Explain cascading protection to me, then. I'm curious why template:stats bottom and the other stats templates didn't become protected... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:25, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- I think you understand it correctly... Template:stats bottom is indeed currently protected through cascading protection. The link still says Protect, but if you click on it you'll see that it's protected. The cascading protection is still relatively new and this may be an inconsistency. I'd imagine pages protected thru cascading protection should have an Unprotect link instead of Protect to be consistent with explicitly protected pages. (Admin 23:29, 3 February 2008 (EST))
- Ah, that makes much more sense. I guess clicking on the link to check it out was too hard for me. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:35, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- Haha. Well, it would make sense for it to change to Unprotect like with normal protection. Some quick browsing through the MediaWiki bug list seems to indicate that they may have intentionally not changed it because of the computational cost of determining whether a page is recursively protected. Oh well, maybe in the future they'll clean it up. Fortunately we don't protect many pages so it's not too important for us. (Admin 23:39, 3 February 2008 (EST))
