'''Update: I have fallen behind on a lot of the Evolutions content, so I can't do too much here until I catch up.  Once I am caught up, I'll be around more! :)'''

Not much to say about me.  I set up the site after seeing a few episodes of Heroes and realizing it was going to be a hit.  I was inspired by sites like [[lostpedia:|Lostpedia]] and [[memoryalpha:|Memory-Alpha]] and wanted to do for Heroes what they did for Lost and Star Trek respectively.  I also set up the now defunct Bionic Wiki and WatchmenWiki sites.  Just here to offer a guiding hand and help keep the info fresh, the real praise for this site goes to all of you making contributions.  You're the ones making this site so great! :)

*<s>Investigate creating "Episode" template to make adding episodes easy and uniform.</s> (Thanks, [[User:Hardvice|Hardvice]]!)
*<s>Rename category '''Heroes' Wiki Contributor''' to '''Heroes Wiki Contributor''' and update user pages with new category name to match the proper name of the wiki.</s> (Thanks, [[User:Hardvice|Hardvice]]!)
*<s>For any articles using HTML in them change any hardcoded references to <tt><nowiki>http://heroeswiki.com/</nowiki></tt> over to <tt><nowiki>{{SERVER}}/</nowiki></tt> so that the URLs will be relative.</s>
*<s>Create <nowiki>{{AfD}}</nowiki> template that automatically includes [[:Category:Articles for Deletion]] and adds a warning at the top of the article to see the Talk page to comment on the nomination.</s> (Thanks yet again, [[User:Hardvice|Hardvice]]! :)  )
*<s>Reconfigure to run php4 as cgi and php5 as apache module (currently the other way around) since Heroes Wiki uses php5 and it's the most active site on the server. (This one's all me.)</s>(All done!)
*<s>Configure Squid to cache articles to reduce load during peak days.</s>(Done and working great!)

Not much to say about me. I set up the site after seeing a few episodes of Heroes and realizing it was going to be a hit. I was inspired by sites like Lostpedia and Memory-Alpha and wanted to do for Heroes what they did for Lost and Star Trek respectively. I also set up the now defunct Bionic Wiki and WatchmenWiki sites. Just here to offer a guiding hand and help keep the info fresh, the real praise for this site goes to all of you making contributions. You're the ones making this site so great! :)

If you want to reach me for anything, just post to my talk page. If the matter is sensitive or private, please email me at admin@heroeswiki.com.

I have a journal here where I talk about my personal experiences administering Heroes Wiki if you're interested in my insight.

Suggested Reading

  • About this site. Some general rules of thumb and info about this site. Mostly a high-level overview.
  • If you're going to be editing articles, definitely check this out beforehand. It'll give you a better idea how we do things around here. :)

Tips

  • To automatically strip off a namespace when creating a link, just end with the pipe. ex. [[User talk:Admin|]] displays as Admin and links to User talk:Admin.
  • Try not to bite the newcomers. First impressions are important, so when leaving them messages try to sound cordial and helpful even if they make a few mistakes. If necessary reread your message and try to ensure it comes off as friendly. A bad first experience may discourage a visitor from returning or contributing.
  • If a discussion doesn't seem to be getting anywhere or is going around in circles, take a moment and take a step back. Consider whether you may need to approach the situation from a different angle. Sometimes this may reveal that the discussion was actually moot.
  • Something being "obvious" is not the same as "having a strong opinion about something." If you're going to use the word "obvious" stop for a minute and give it a second thought. It's usually the latter.

Am I adding a theory?

When contributing to an article here are some red flags that should alert you that your contribution may in fact be a theory and needs to be placed in the Theories section instead:

  • Your text includes words such as: probably, maybe, possibly, likely. If you're not sure something is true then feel free to discuss it on the article's talk page. If it's true then it can be added to the article. If there's not enough proof then it's a Theory.

...more to come...

  • Your text begins with the words "It is unknown..."

Trivia

  • I'm a RedHat Certified Architect (RHCA). As a result of the RHCA certification process, I am also a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and a Red Hat Certified Datacenter Specialist (RHCDS).
  • I used to be a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), but my certification lapsed. Within the next few years I'd like to restore my CCNA and then proceed to become a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP).
  • Google flew me out to their headquarters in Mountain View, California to interview me.
  • I own a Tivo and can't imagine how I got by without it for so long.
  • The farthest I've ever been outside of the US was configuring a router in China over telnet. (I guess that doesn't count, eh?)
  • The only time I've physically been outside of the US was a business trip to Toronto in Canada.
  • I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes with unclogging a toilet thereby saving the day.
  • I have a degree in computer science with a focus on Internet technology. Is it wrong that this piece of trivia comes after the toilet one? hmm.
  • WAFL (pronounced Waffle) is the filesystem used by Netapp storage appliances. Coincidence or fate?
  • I used to run a dialup BBS back in the '90s when they were still popular.
  • Every time I see the name Oliver Grigsby I hear The Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby" in my head, only "Eleanor Rigby" is replaced with "Oliver Grigsby". Weird, huh?
