Synopsis
Ugh, time to get up for another boring day. Nathaniel gets out of bed and throws on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. Having a job in the summer sucks. When everyone else is enjoying their days, going to the beach to have fun, I have to work at the beach 40 hours a week. Nathaniel pours a cup of coffee. Goodbye to having free time. Goodbye to having a life. He makes a bowl of cereal and sits down to eat. Kaitlin walks into the kitchen and sits down opposite Nathaniel.
“Morning.”
“Hey, Kaitlin, could you grab me my coffee? Oh wait, I got it.” Nathaniel says, pulling the cup across the table to him.
“Hey, I’ve got to practice, don’t I?” He says, smiling.
“Yeah, whatever. Oh my god, Daniella, stop playing that damn piano, its too early!”
“Its 10 o’clock!” she responds from the other room, as the music stops.
“Oh well, it’s too early for me to listen to that piano!”
“Well, I’d love to stay and listen to you two fight yet again, but I’ve gotta get to work. Tell Matt to get up soon, he shouldn’t be sleeping all day.”
“Alright, bye Nate.”
“Bye Nate.”
A couple hours later, Nathaniel sits in the lifeguard tower watching the water at Calumet Beach. What a beautiful day, I wish I could be in the water instead of sitting here, baking in the sun. Just then, a black, unmarked helicopter appears to the north. That’s weird, there aren’t normally helicopters in the area… Maybe I should check this out. Nathaniel reaches out mentally to the helicopter, scanning the brains of the men inside. He hears a lot of thoughts, and comes to the understanding that the men on the helicopter are most likely working for the government and are supposed to round up certain people; but one thought stands out: “How do they expect us to find an invisible kid?”
Oh, no, they’re going after Max! I gotta warn him! He reaches out to Max, who lives a couple miles from the beach. Max! Max! Can you hear me?
“Jeez, yeah, I can hear you, what do you want?!”
You have to get out of your house right now!
“What are you talking about?”
Listen, a helicopter full of armed men are on their way to get you, they’ll be at your house any second, you have to leave!
“Where am I supposed to go?!”
Go to that abandoned warehouse on State Street, I’ll have someone meet you, until then, stay invisible!
“Ok. Oh, and thanks”
No problem. Nathaniel leaves the connection open, but pushes it to the back of his mind as he opens a new link with Scott. Scott, you need to leave now.
“What are you talking about? I can’t just walk out of summer school, Nate.”
You need to help Max, he’s being hunted, probably by the government.
“What? Why?”
Maybe they want to experiment on him, I don’t know, but you need to help him. Get out somehow, go get your brother, and have him find Max.
“…Alright, but this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…”
I know it doesn’t; thanks for doing this.
“No biggie”
Nathaniel breaths a sigh of relief. At least Max should be safe. But wait, they aren't going after just him… They have to be going after all of us… I have to warn the others… He opens a link with Matt. Matt, you have to listen to me. Get your sisters out of the house now, some men are going to come and try to capture you.
“Are you sure?”
I know they are going after Max, and I know they aren't going to stop with just him. There are a lot of us with abilities, I’m sure they know about us, too.
“Fine, I’ll tell the girls.”
Hurry up!
Alright, now that I’ve warned my family, I have to get the others to safety, too. I should warn Dimitri and Stephanie, then they could get the other girls. Nathaniel opens a link with Dimitri. Dimitri, can you hear me?
“Nate? What are you doing? I know we haven’t talked in a while, but that doesn’t mean you can just invade my mind to start a conversation.”
Dimitri, stop it. I did it to warn you. A group of men will be coming to your house very soon to take you away, you need to leave now!
“But I just got home.”
It doesn’t matter, you need to fly to Krystal and get her away from her house. Then fly with her to Sophia’s and have Krystal convince her to leave with you.
“Where are we supposed to go?”
Fly north, go to Canada. I doubt anywhere in the country is safe right now. We’ll all meet up there.
“...Ok, but you better be right about this.”
Nathaniel again pushes the connection to the back of his mind. Just one more person to warn. He makes a link with Stephanie. Steph, you have to leave work and go get April!
“Nate? Why would I do that, you know I can’t stand her.”
I don’t care about that, you and her are going to get a little visit from some men that isn’t going to end well.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
I’m talking about armed men, government workers, coming to take the two of you away!
“Nate, I highly doubt a bunch of dudes with guns would rush a Starbucks, especially one a block away from a police station.”
Maybe not, but that doesn’t mean April is safe.
“I could care less what happens to that girl; if they do come for her, that’s her issue”
You know Steph, you were best friends with her once. Don’t you think that counts for anything?
“‘Once’ is the key word.”
Steph— he begins, but he is interrupted by Matt: “Nate, I’ve got a problem here”
This is going to be a long day...
