I meant other thing

I meant Word of God as the Word of Tim Kring, in other words something like this "A statement regarding a controversy in a series. The Word Of God is considered inarguable because it comes from someone thought to be the ultimate authority, usually a creator or executive producer."(TV TROPES) in other words i meant is that we shouldn't wait for the highr up to answer. Markus Wildman or Markus Gaines?

Surely this is no coincidence? Is there anyway we can get confirmation that Markus "Wildman" is not Markus Gaines? Or is he a Survival character/ Josh KorolenkoUTChronicles

  • They're the same person. See here. I'm still sifting through the iStory. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:56, 1 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Ok thanks. About the Chapter 3 summary, I have listed Markus's hyperlink as "Markus Wildman" and his ability as "Animal Control". Also, I forgot to mention the other part of the story (linked above) as I only completed the house attack. Would you like me to change anything or is it fine as is? Josh KorolenkoUTChronicles

Pictures in a Table

If you look here, you may notice that the pictures get cut off. How can that be fixed? (Same for here..) --Iheartheroes 17:21, 2 September 2009 (EDT)

If I wanted to make a page...

... under my username for my favourite quotes, should it be User:Mc hammark\quotes. Would that be ok or should it have another name?

  • It can be whatever you want it to be; if you want quotes, then do quotes! --Iheartheroes 16:12, 3 September 2009 (EDT)
  • So the page above would be fine? --mc_hammark 16:18, 3 September 2009 (EDT)
    • It's your page! But make sure you use the / not the \ ...I don't know if you can do it that way, but usually it's / not \ --Iheartheroes 16:20, 3 September 2009 (EDT)
      • Ok, thanks! --mc_hammark 15:21, 3 September 2009
        • And if I wanted to create something like a miniseries, I would just put User:Mc hammark/ (and then the name), and that would be fine as well? Oh and to RGS, sorry for using your page as a discussion thingy. --mc_hammark 09:07, 5 September 2009 (EDT)
          • Yes that is all you do. Yeah sorry RGS :/--Catalyst · Talk · HL 09:11, 5 September 2009 (EDT)
            • And the same for uploading images? Or is it something different? --mc_hammark 11:54, 5 September 2009 (EDT)
              • when you upload an image just upload the file with what ever title it has, put the source on it and .--Catalyst · Talk · HL 12:10, 5 September 2009 (EDT)

Delete Page?

Hey, can you please delete this page? (User:Iheartheroes/Gulp Ninja Series/Tie Ups) Please? --Iheartheroes 20:28, 4 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Also, I think you should delete the unsourced images that User:Adamhiro has uploaded (you can find a list of them here), since no matter how much I urge him to add sources, he doesn't respond (in fact, he doesn't respond to anything anyone says to him). There seems to be no other way to get his attention than to delete the images. --Radicell 08:27, 5 September 2009 (EDT)
    • No problem. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:20, 5 September 2009 (EDT)
      • And if it's not to much trouble, User:Mc hammark/Johnny Foreigner as well, decided to call it a different name. --mc_hammark 07:36, 6 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Could I afd some unused templates that have no content on them? --Boom D  17  18:22, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Technically, you can afd anything you want, as it's just a nomination for deletion. But if there's a good reason for the nomination, chances are it will get discussed (which you can jump start by heading to the template's discussion page and stating your reasons) and possibly axed. Thanks! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:13, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
    • It's Monday now. Time to axe Adamhiro's images. --Radicell 19:46, 7 September 2009 (EDT)

          • Hey Ryan, while we're on the subject of images, I just want to ask, what's the policy on using other user's images that are in the user images category? And sorry for causing the trouble above. --mc_hammark 16:10, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
            • No trouble above, you just need to make sure that categories are blue links, and not red links. Not a big deal at all. When an image is uploaded to Heroes Wiki, it is not considered property of the uploader, but of Heroes Wiki. You are free to use any image on Heroes Wiki. That said, there are certainly images that are identifiable as another editor's images that out of courtesy you should avoid using. For instance, I have three images uploaded to the wiki that are pictures of my sons. They are technically images that belong to Heroes Wiki, which anybody can use. Of course, it would seem silly for you to use one of these images since the inherent nature of the pictures really belongs to me. There are other images that are from the web or that don't have any "unwritten" ties to a particular user, and these are fair game. If you're unsure, feel free to ask me...or just ask the uploader. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:20, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
              • Will do. Basically, avoid personal images. Thanks Ryan. --mc_hammark 16:22, 7 September 2009 (EDT)

I've noticed...

...some pages have all of their words start in capital letters and others have a mix. this can get very hard for adding links and stuff as you know you've spelt it correctly but it doesn't like. A couple of examples are Super Speed and Super speed and Superspeed, as well as Homeland Security and Homeland security. So for these red links should I just redirect them to the correct pages to save others the hassle of looking at what is or isn't capitals and all that jazz. And could you let me know the code for redirecting? Thanks. --mc_hammark 16:42, 7 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Unless an article's title is a proper noun (such as Homeland Security), the article should be all lowercase letters. The wiki's default is to always capitalize the first word (unless specified not to, as in iStory). This means that the correct name for Daphne's ability is super speed, not "Super Speed". But because the first word is always capitalized, the title comes out Super speed. There is no need for a redirect for incorrect capitalization. However, the code is simply to type #redirect link at the top of the page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:54, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
  • So is it still ok for me to redirect these pages, it just seems as though it would make things run a lot smoother for people. --mc_hammark 16:55, 7 September 2009 (EDT)

Activity

Hey, Ryan! Sorry for the dry spell. Until the season starts and possibly even then, it may continue. I've taken up three APs and four shows with SATs coming up soon. I'll see if I have any free time to patrol and clean-up soon but seeing the episode per week may be hard! How was your summer? Therequiembellishere 20:55, 7 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Great summer...very busy. It's going to be an even busier autumn for me--I'm expecting a baby girl in December! :) Whatever editing you're able to do is awesome, TRBIH. You're a great editor, and it's good to see you when you're around. Take care of yourself, and do well in school! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:13, 7 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Wow, congratulations! And thank you. :) Therequiembellishere 21:23, 8 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Another baby! This is the first I heard. Congrats! It'll be interesting to have a girl in the mix now. Any names picked out yet? If I ever have kids I think I'd be afraid to have a girl because I can totally imagine being way overprotective of a girl... probably end up the cliche dad showing the boyfriend his shotgun on the girl's first date. :) (Admin 21:49, 8 September 2009 (EDT))
      • Yeah, I'm very excited. This was a complete surprise to us! Her name is Hallie Pearl, named after two of Ruth's great grandmothers. And I can totally feel the overprotective dad coming out already. Oy! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:54, 8 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Is "Hallie" pronounced like "Hay'-lee?" When it comes to baby girl names I have a few favorites and one is Hayley so if it's pronounced the same way I really love it. If it's pronounced like "Hal-e" (simarly to Wall-E) then its pronunciation is close enough, though. :) (Admin 22:03, 8 September 2009 (EDT))
          • It's "Hal-E", which rhymes with O'Malley. Ruth has had it picked out since she was a little girl. And my sister's last name is Haley (pronounced the way you love), so we've got both in the family! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:05, 8 September 2009 (EDT)

Hi

Hi Ryan. I have recently created a wiki, and was wondering if I could copy some of the templates (such as the character and ability templates). If I could, I would very much appreciate it as it would be helpful. But if not, it's ok.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 21:15, 8 September 2009 (EDT)

Just a general question

On Wade Winslow's page you changed the word jacuzzi to hot tub and said "no evidence this is a hot tub with the brand name Jacuzzi". Is jacuzzi a brand name? I just thought it was another name for a hot tub. --mc_hammark 13:06, 9 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Yes, Jacuzzi is a brand name. It should always be capitalized, and really should only be used if the tub that's featured really is a Jacuzzi brand tub. It's one of those "genericized trademarks", like Kleenex, Jell-O, Band-Aid, Cool Whip, ChapStick, Dumpster, Coke, etc. Whirlpool, on the other hand, is both the name of a company, as well as a generic name for a hot tub, and can be used either way. And there, children, is your grammar lesson for the day. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:24, 9 September 2009 (EDT)

Pinehearst company/hq

Ryan could we replace unsatisfactory episode descriptions/sectstubs for Pinehearst Company with completed ones from Pinehearst Headquarters? -- By Danko CH 17:02, 10 September 2009 (EDT)

  • I don't understand your question. Could you give me an example? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:03, 10 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Here -- By Danko CH 17:05, 10 September 2009 (EDT)
      • It looks like you just copied the summary from one article and pasted it to the article of another. One article is about the building, and the other is about the organization. Copying shouldn't be necessary since the two articles do not need to (and shouldn't) have identical summaries. Plus, the summary for Our Father was good, I'm not sure why it was considered unsatisfactory. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:27, 10 September 2009 (EDT)
        • It looked very short and had no links in, but I know what you mean, thanks-- By Danko CH 17:30, 10 September 2009 (EDT)
          • It was short because there wasn't much that needed to be said about the company. Links are easy to add. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:37, 10 September 2009 (EDT)

They were just there to try to annoy us. :) I think he may think it annoys us when he does it, but it's not really anything out of the ordinary. Just normal stuff we clean up anyway, so whatever. In fact, all the extra accounts actually helps bring in more money for the site, he just doesn't realize it. haha (Admin 20:53, 10 September 2009 (EDT))
        • More money, isn't the site free to join?-- By Danko CH 14:45, 11 September 2009 (EDT)
          • The site is free to join. More accounts bring us more revenue in terms of advertising. What vandals like TEN and MDJ don't realize is that it literally takes an administrator about two and a half seconds to block them. Double if they've created a page that needs to be deleted. So if they've gone and created five new accounts, I'm spending about twenty seconds blocking them. That's a heck of a lot less time than they've spent making fake email addresses, switching IP addresses, or whatever method they've chosen to get through the filters. Plus on top of it all, those extra accounts that they're creating really do help bring in more money for Heroes Wiki. Score! -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:07, 11 September 2009 (EDT)

Questions about recent changes on FBI agents and Gun sellers

Hi Ryan,

I was watching again the season 1 and reading the related GNs, at the same time checking appearances. I came to see that some characters were missing, so I tried to create their articles. A few questions to you, if I'm not bothering :)

  • Nope, no bother! And I'm glad that you're making new articles. :)
  • What's wrong the images? (Image:FBI agent (I).jpg, Image:FBI agent (III).JPG, Image:FBI agent (IV).JPG, Image:Gun seller (II).JPG) I tried to upload them according to the rules and also added all the categories.
    • They are not standard size. Character portraits should be 200 x 250.
  • What's a duplicate image? You nominated Image:Gun seller (II).JPG for deletion because of duplication. But I didn't duplicate it from somewhere, I just took a snapshot from the pdf file of the GN. May be you meant something else, maybe I did some other error. So please can you explain me so that I can learn how to upload better images and create better articles. :) I'm genuine when I say this I'm always willing to learn and improve =) (By the way I also redirected the wrongly redirected links to the FBI agent.)
    • I nominated the gun seller's image for deletion because the image already exists on the wiki. It's not good practice to have multiple images floating around the wiki. I would have taken care of it earlier, but I didn't have time so I just made a note for myself to fix it when I have a little more time. Not a big deal.
  • When and how can I know when the article came to achieve to the Heroes Wiki article standards?
    • I'll fix them up--the "needs maintenance" flags were more of a note for myself to fix the pages up when I get a second. Specifically, some of the articles were missing things like the fact that they're dead, or they had some links missing, or had bolded words in the wrong spots. It's also not good practice to put the parenthetical numbers in the body of articles. So for instance, when we put quotations, we should pipe the name (FBI agent) so it looks better (FBI agent).
  • By the way, I also don't like all those numbers around people (I), (II) etc. And you might have been angry with me when you saw me adding all those numbers from which you'd gotten rid of, a while ago. But, when I saw that there were many unnamed FBI agents or other, I did what I thought was necessary to be done. So this was to make sure that you knew I didn't do any of these out of pleasure but to approach perfection, I mean to improve the wiki.
    • Nope, not angry with you at all! You're doing a great job! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:14, 12 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Therefore, I will be highly grateful if you help me in helping the wiki e.g. if you tell me if there's anything wrong in my style or in what I do.

Thank you very much in advance,

Awaiting impatiently for your reply,

Friendly,

Character nomenclature

Hi Ryan,

Some questions... When we're writing the names of people in appearances what're the rules? There might be some inconsistencies.

  • I mean, one way I saw is that once, the full name (name - surname) is written and then just the first name e.g. Peter Petrelli in his first appearance and then always Peter. I felt that's the rule.
  • But for example there's also Mr. Bennet who always goes Mr. Bennet in the first season and then suddenly it becomes Noah with the first episode of season 2. Probably he was named first "Mr. Bennet" because his first name was not known before and then he was renamed "Noah" because it was revealed later.
  • But with some other poeple, it's not like that. Even we don't know his/her name at the particular episode or GN, their name is changed when we come to know.
  • Questions,
    • If the name is known but is not of great importance should the person be named according to the profession or just the name. As far as I saw, the name is always preferred. So why in Genesis it's not Scotty but Odessa Fire Chief?
    • Kin Egami appears in 2 episodes and in one GN. In both episodes, he's named Mr. Egami and in the GN, Kin Egami. Why?
    • Should we use abbreviations as much as possible? For example should Los Angeles bartender and Los Angeles bar customer be linxtexted to "LA bartender" and "LA bar customer" respectively?
    • If the name of the Haitian is revealed in this upcoming volume, are we going to change his name in his previous appearances!? I guess no. The same way is for Kin Egami, I guess. So, is it not proper to name, Mrs. Petrelli until the episode in which the name "Angela" is revealed? If this is proper, is it also not proper to linktext to what they're known at first? For example Kent Harper was known as Agent Harper until the last episode. So is it not more proper to write "Kent Harper" and then linktext it to "Agent Harper" until the last episode, where it could be written "Kent Harper" -- instead of directly changing it to "Kent Harper"?
  • Sorry for the tons of questions. I'm little confused about naming, it seems to me as if it's not done very much in solicitude.
  • By the way congratulations also for the baby news =) And thank you in forward :)

Friendly,

--Janrodrigo 07:00, 13 September 2009 (EDT)

    • I think we should always change a character's name on the appearances template if we discover a new, proper-noun name over a descriptive name (ex. the Odessa Fire Chief's name was discovered as Scotty, I think this change needs to be made). On the other hand, in-episode transitions such as Mrs. Petrelli -> Angela Petrelli -> Angela or Agent Harper -> Kent Harper or Jason -> Jason Pierce don't really matter much to me, although for consistency purposes I'd like it to be either listed as the same name on all the templates, or listed as different names as we discover them (as is the case with Angela, Jason, etc.) About abbreviations, it's pretty arbitrary and we usually do it if: 1) the name is quite long (ex. most of the Homeland Security agents appearing throughout Volume 4 were shortened), and 2) it's actually possible to abbreviate. --Radicell 10:13, 13 September 2009 (EDT)
      • Thank you Radicell and thank you also for explaining me the "two parenthetical numbers occuring in succession" thing in Genesis, now I'm learning better :) Ok so you actually summerised everything into 4 points.
        1. Proper-noun name is always preferred to a descriptive name.
        2. Same name in all templates for consistency reasons.
        3. Listed as different names as we discover them.
        4. In cases where no.3 conflicts with no.2, you told no.3 could be applied (as in the case of Angela, Mr. Bennet and Jason)

So, I want to ask if no.3 conflicts with no.1, then what should we do as in the hypothetical example of the Haitian that I gave little upwards? May be the Haitian won't be changed because he's been known like that for so long. So let me ask another question.

The name, Eden McCain was not revealed until Better Halves which was Eden's fourth appearance. In the same episode we came to know that she actually worked for Mr. Bennet. Until then, we only knew that she was Mohinder's neighbour and an old neighbour and friend of Chandra. And in each of the three episodes Nora Zehetner is mentioned as Guest Starring, so a name neither there is provided. She appears in 8 episodes. So would it be proper to write like this:

which would appear as;

This is not an accostomed way, but what do you (both of you) think of this? Now, one next to each other Mohinder's neighbor and Eden may stand and seem lame but in the template, between so many names I don't think it will seem lame. And the reader thus will know when the name of the character was revealed and how it was called until then + the template will also be less spoilery :) This is just an idea.

This is how the template of Genesis would stand if done so:

About Charles Deveaux for example, both his first name and surname was revealed at the same time, in his second appearance. So I've to put or Simone's father or Charles Deveaux. If I put the latter then how can I write Simone, without her family name in the template, although it's just obvious? It's clearer this way, if I write down, never letting descriptive names to be used as much as possible:

Or there's the other way, writing without considering at all, what was used once or how much was known in the actual episode:

And also see how it's now:

What do you think?

Friendly, --Janrodrigo 13:01, 13 September 2009 (EDT)

  • This isn't really the place for a conversation about policies that affect the style of the wiki...but I'll definitely add my two cents since you asked the question. In general, we use the first and last name of the character on their first appearance, and the short version of their name from that point on. Also, in general, we go back and fix the name according to new information we receive, provided that it's not a "big deal". What I mean by that is that there are a few cases where a person's name seems to be a tightly guarded secret, like Mr. Bennet's was for the first season. If the Haitian's name is revealed, he would fall under that same category. I don't think we should go back and fix their names. But somebody like Vic, that's a really minor character, and it wasn't like his name was a secret or a plot point or anything like that. It was just a minor character whose name was unknown, and he got a name later on. For those types of people (who seem to be the bulk of the name "reveals"), I don't have a problem going back and fixing up their names. But if enough people balk at the fact that we're doing a case-by-case situation, or that we're not consistent, I'd rather go back and fix all of the "Mr. Bennet"s to "Noah", rather than go the route of Peter's mother → Mrs. Petrelli → Angela Petrelli → Angela. That makes it really hard to count appearances, and seems like a really silly way to record names.

Your other question was about abbreviating. Space on the appearance templates is at a premium. I personally would rather see more abbreviating. So yes, "Los Angeles bartender" would be better served as being linked to the title of the article ("Los Angeles bartender"), but being printed (or piped) as the shortened, abbreviated name ("LA bartender"), just to save space and to make names look nicer. Those are my thoughts and opinions, they are not policy or rules of the wiki. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:20, 13 September 2009 (EDT)

Re:Spaces in category links

It's not something I just go around doing. Much like the double space thing I told you long ago, it's something that I just do if I see. Sometimes I click a wrong link and go to a template editing, I just do it because it's there. Intuitive Empath - Talk - Contributions 19:36, 14 September 2009 (EDT)

Thanks!

RyanGibsonStewart, thank you for the congrats and kind words, I appreciate it. I thought I might have as much fun with the character as possible. And there's much more to come.

Updating Tracy's ability

We now know more about Tracy's ability so I think it should be updated - but not to water mimicry, to water manipulation. She can freeze things, turn into water, and (from Ice Queen, Part 2, check your main page image, she creates a ball of water) generate and project water. This is beyond both freezing and water mimicry so a new ability page should be made. --Elemental Manipulator [ U | T | C ] - When in doubt, ask BTE 05:12, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

  • How about Cyrokinesis? --Iheartheroes 07:15, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
    • I think we should use the name that was given in a canon source: freezing. I don't think we have evidence that she has a new power, only that the power has evolved. So I definitely don't think we should create a new ability page. Nor do I think we should change the name. I do think that we should update the limits and the power to show what Tracy can do now. I also think this discussion is best suited for the talk:freezing discussion page. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:09, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

Br and Br />

What's the difference between <br> and <br />? By the way, have you had any luck on finding the names of the actors in Mission: Impossible? :) --Radicell 10:15, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

  • <br /> is the proper way of using that tag. The other method works, but does not follow the W3C standard. (Admin 10:37, 17 September 2009 (EDT))
    • What Admin said. And no, I haven't made any more progress...but I also haven't done too much asking in awhile. Thanks for the reminder...(So much to do!) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:07, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

Maya Herrera Archive

Why isn't there a need to archive? She was in multiple seasons, alot, so I would think that she would need to be archived...so I'm kind of curious now...~~ Iheartheroes 22:00, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

  • She only appeared in 15 episodes. She appeared or was mentioned in a total of 19 episodes, graphic novels, etc. That all fits on one page without a problem. If she continues to appear or be mentioned, then we can easily re-archive her page. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:03, 17 September 2009 (EDT)
    • What about monica then? and why does arthur have one for all seasons? when there is like 4 on both S1 and 2? Same with Linderman. Um, daphne and adam. rachel and tracy have only been in one season.--Iheartheroes 22:10, 17 September 2009 (EDT)

Top 5 Favorite Quotes

Ryan, Why did you pull my new Fan-Creations page and put it in my own namespace? The point of it, is for members to contribute to it; as a fan-creation. You mentioned "not canon-analysis", yet the bulk of it's info is going to be quotes from canon... Just not seeing how this can't be both a Fan-Creation, and why it wouldn't fit under 'canon-analysis'....I know putting it in my own usernamespace is useless for the page...why not in Fan-Creations? Is there somewhere something like this can be presented so that it can get wiki-wide contribution? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 09/18/2009 17:23 (EST)

  • A list of your favorite quotes is not analysis of canon. As far as I can tell, the page only had your favorite quotes, so it was a personal page. Typically, fan creations grow in the user namespace and then get moved when they are actually considered a fan creation, rather than just one person's creation or a list of just one person's favorites. I suggest you place a note on the community portal if you'd like people to contribute to it. Until it grows, it doesn't belong in the main namespace. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:27, 18 September 2009 (EDT)

Punct

Hey Ryan, I notice you always correct me adding a last "," just before the last "and" when writing a list. For example, you would write "I like blue, red, and green" where I would write "I like blue, red and green". Is this something you prefer and are used to read or is it true english grammar ? ;) --  (talk) 07:49, 19 September 2009 (EDT)

  • English grammar states that having a comma before the last item in a list of three or more things is optional. Both "blue, red, and green" and "blue, red and green" are correct in English. However, since we standardize our style at the wiki, we always go with the first choice. Similarly, both "recognize" and "recognise" are correct spellings. However, we have chosen to standardize our spelling to use American English spellings so that we are all always doing the same thing. So bottom line, either is correct, but we only use one way at the wiki. :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:03, 19 September 2009 (EDT)

      • Gabriel, are we not friendly? :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 12:48, 19 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Sorry Ryan, I wasnt trying to say you wasnt friendly , I meant that for people to become patroller's they have to know the full english language which isnt really fair Gabriel BishopUTC 13:13, 19 September 2009 (EDT)
          • Becoming a patroller shouldn't be a goal to which one aspires. But yes, one of the things I look at when promoting patrollers is whether they have a good grasp on the English language. Knowing English perfectly is impossible, so I don't look for people who know the "full" rules of grammar and syntax in English. I look for people who have a very good understanding of how the language works. In the case of using a comma before the final item in a list, either way described above is acceptable in English. I'm not sure all patrollers even know that--it's certainly not a determining factor in whether or not somebody is chosen to be a patroller. In fact, that issue is more about knowing Heroes Wiki's practices than anything else. And again, it's not a determining factor in the decision to make somebody a patroller. But rather than complaining about the issue or saying that it's not fair, a better approach would be to learn a grammar lesson from it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:21, 19 September 2009 (EDT)

Homecoming

Hi Ryan, In Genesis (Oct. 1), Claire says;

"I've got the Bishop game next week, SATs in October, homecoming is 3 weeks from today and I'm a freak show!"--Claire

However, Homecoming is little bit more then a week later. Is this a mistake of the producers? May be a wrong canonical info?
--Janrodrigo 13:37, 20 September 2009 (EDT)

  • P.S. And also she speaks as if it wasn't October. --Janrodrigo 13:40, 20 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Yes, it's probably a mistake. Series pilots are often created long before the rest of the show's timeline is created. Plus, Heroes has never stuck very closely to an exact timeline. See here for a previous discussion on the subject. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:30, 20 September 2009 (EDT)
      • Thanks a lot, Ryan :) Did you see this and this? I've really gone through the timeline clues with papers and pen, and also almost with strings!! =) in a very detailed way. And I found out that if we accept every piece of canon info as correct, there's NO way to build a consistent timeline. But just negating two of them make the line very consistent - but then we've to slide some events just for one day. So, what to do? What do you think? I say that I really did a very much in-depth analyses of timelines one-by-one and character-by-character. And I also concluded why it's probable (how it was possible) that those two info came to be wrong. I hope that you aprroach to this with an open mind :) So, should these be discussed somewhere, in some portal or something? Or should start changing little by little with short explanations? What do you say? Thanks again. P.S. Sorry for the spelling mistakes in recent changes, I was too sleepy. Sincerely and friendly, --Janrodrigo 02:13, 21 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Isn't it like the first of October when she says that? I don't know about you, but sometimes I mistakingly mark my papers with the previous month when a new month starts, and some people don't know how many days each month has, so Claire could have thought it was still September. And maybe the school moved homecoming up?--Citizen 06:23, 21 September 2009 (EDT)
          • Citizen, that's exactly the rationale I use to explain it to myself. But Janrodrigo is right, that Homecoming wasn't three weeks from the eclipse. This isn't news, though--it's been discussed before (see the link above). I'm not sure what else needs to be done about it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:10, 21 September 2009 (EDT)
            • Then the school moved it up ten days. A school I used to attend frequently changed dates for school events. I don't think it's uncommon, even in the Heroes universe. A continuity error on part of the writers? Maybe. Something that can be fixed with in-world reasoning? Definitely.--Citizen 15:20, 21 September 2009 (EDT)
              • Exactly. There's also the notion of character error. Claire, in character, simply got the date wrong. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:09, 21 September 2009 (EDT)

Nathan Petrelli (Sylar)

Just to be sure. Are we writing everyting now down to Sylar's page? Are we accepting Sythan now as Sylar, though another Sylar keeps appearing in Matt's mind. I also think that a part of Sylar's mind or whatsoever has been transferred to Matt's mind during what he did to Sylar. This new two episodes make that clear I think. And Nathan (Sylar) when he spoke to Angela, he said he wanted to change, that he's been horrific in the past (referring to what he did in Fugitives and especially to Peter) and that he wanted to become better!! (not worse!) This resembles rather to what Gabriel Gray would say if he'd be Nathan in the past, even though he says it, in a Nathan-ish style. Plus abilities re-emerging is not a sign Sylar (I speak on a mental level - Didn't we count Jesse Murphy as Peter Petrelli when Peter was in his body?). It's completely a physical sign, completely dependent on gene expression.
My point is that he's not simply Sylar made to believe he's Nathan. He actually possesses also part of Nathan's mind and DNA. He only partly possesses the mind of Sylar and does not possess at all the desires, wishes and memories of Sylar. If he was simply Sylar made to believe he's Nathan, he would be forced to act like Nathan, which he doesn't. So if we say a person is made up of three things; body, mind and soul. We would say that this new guy's body and mind is a combination of Nathan's and Sylar's bodies and minds (I'm including everything; organs, DNA, ego, desires, memories etc.). And as soul, he has definitely Gabriel Gray's soul. So, what do you say, should we accept him simply as Sylar now on? --Janrodrigo 15:47, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
P.S. Did you notice the malicous behaviour of Sylar (I say HE's Sylar) to Matt and the classical malicious music that played again when Sylar made Matt used his power, and Sylar's classical laugh. Also, worthy to notice that none of such characteristics aren't present in "Nathan (Sylar)". --Janrodrigo 15:47, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

  • The character played by Adrian Pasdar possesses no more of Nathan's DNA than any other character who has shapeshifted. Nathan is dead. About the only thing that should be mentioned on Nathan's page from here on out is that Sylar is impersonating him, or anything that is mentioned about the actual Nathan (like things from his past). Beyond that, everything we saw last night was Sylar. To address a few of your other points, Jesse was actually Peter. Body insertion is a different ability than shapeshifting. Where did you hear that Sylar possesses Nathan's DNA? I haven't heard that. Nor do I think it would make a difference--possessing somebody's DNA somehow still doesn't make you that person. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:55, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
    • I wasn't meaning that we should write the summaries in Nathan's page (and I'm against of it as much as you). However don't you even slightly feel that he's not entirely the Sylar we knew? What I mean is that just as we've a page for Jessica Sanders, another personality of Niki Sanders; at least we should have a page called Nathan Petrelli (Sylar) or "Sylar (Nathan Petrelli)" and put the summaries there and also to Sylar's page, in a little shorter style, under another title or whatever. What do you say? --Janrodrigo 16:13, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
      • Well, yeah, obviously Sylar has changed. I'm not sure it's the same situation as Niki and Jessica...but a separate page is an idea I'd be willing to entertain. Why don't you draw something up in your user namespace so we can see what it would look like. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:15, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Thanks --Janrodrigo 16:18, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

Tracy Strauss' Ability

  • Hi Ryan. Since you're online, would you care to analyze the Tracy Strauss ability issue. I have also left a not on the character's discussion page. --NiveKJ13 (talk2me) 15:51, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
    • The information we have up to this point is that Tracy has an ability called "freezing" and that it is somehow changing or evolving. I think this is a perfect question to pose to the guys at comicbookresources, assuming they're still holding their weekly "Behind the Eclipse" sessions. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:56, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
  • So, should we leave both ability names in her page or we should just leave it as freezing alone. Because based on what we've seen, she has Water mimicry; to add to that, Noah mentioned, "ice melts..."; Tracy also said "...this water thing came on instinct". (BTW, I editted the page earlier before this asking question, sorry) --NiveKJ13 (talk2me) 16:02, 22 September 2009 (EDT)
        • She only has one ability, and as far as we know, it's called "freezing". Personally, I think we should leave the name as "freezing" and edit the limits and what she can do. Then, when we learn more, we can change the name. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:09, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

Hiya Ryan

Hi Ryan, Cockney Charlie here , hehe. Just wanted to know what you thought about the Heroes season opener, I thought it was great and the acting by Milo,Hayden,Masi,James and Jack was superb. Also what did you think about Hiro going back and changing time. Hmmm I think Hiro will go back in time to stop sylar killing Charlie and save her, so sylar will murder Claire, which means that new york will blow up as shown in matt's painting in Season 3. What do you think ? :) GB Gabriel BishopUTC 17:19, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

  • I loved the episode. The acting was really fantastic. Hayden was a standout, and I'm very excited for Robert Knepper, who I think is an amazing actor. I was surprised to see Hiro changing time. I though there was a ban on all time traveling. Hmm. I trust that they're going to do something cool with it. I guess we'll have to wait and see! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:25, 22 September 2009 (EDT)

Count numbers - technical question

Hi Ryan. In the list of appearances pages, such as List of character appearances by episode, List of character appearances by graphic novel or List of character appearances by webisode etc. Next to the characters appear (2) or (5), the counting of the appearance appears. But when I copy the entire content of the page and paste it somewhere else, such as here, it doesn't work. The numbers don't appear. Then how come in those pages they appear? What does it make them appear, I mean how does it work? Thank you, --Janrodrigo 15:31, 23 September 2009 (EDT)

  • If you're trying to copy the code on the list of appearances pages themselves, you'll notice that the page is simply made up of a bunch of templates. So if you go to one of the templates, like Template:AppearancesGenesis for instance, you'll notice that the names are added using another template: Template:Appearance. The appearance template is set up to only show the counts on the lists of character appearances. That way the counts aren't shown on the episode (or GN or webisode) pages. Check out the code here and see if that helps explain things. Specifically, it's the code that says {{#if: | ({count})|}} which means that the code will only appear if the page's name has "List of character appearances" in it. Hope that helps! Let me know if you need me to explain it more or differently. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 20:31, 23 September 2009 (EDT)

Tracy Strauss' ability

hey, Ryan! I was just wondering what Tracy Strauss' power was now, because she seems capable of many things that have to do with water. Is she a water mimic or is she cyrokinetic? i just want your opinion before i edit or try anything like that again. thanks! Aren't I Great?

  • I'm not sure what a cryokinetic is--I think that's some kind of therapy for sports injuries. However, the information we have is that Tracy's ability is called "freezing". Her ability seems to have morphed or evolved to allow her to turn into water. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:02, 23 September 2009 (EDT)
    • Thanks! by the way, a cyrokinetic is someone who can create great drops in temperature around them, thus freezing matter. it's okay that you didn't know that though (a lot of people don't). thanks again for responding! Aren't I Great?
      • No, I'm pretty sure "cyrokinetic" is a made up word if it's not talking about therapy. It's what one would call a neologism. At Heroes Wiki, we typically don't use neologisms to name abilities, unless we are explicitly given the neologism as the ability's name. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:12, 23 September 2009 (EDT)
        • Oh, okay. sorry about that. i also wanted to ask you something else, what is your theory about the mysterious compass?Aren't I Great?
          • Not sure. It looks like it only works for evolved humans. Maybe the Sullivan Brothers use it to find evolved humans and bring them into their "family". It also seems to point them in the direction they should travel. It's definitely part of the mystery of the carnies. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:31, 23 September 2009 (EDT)

Shrinking a picture

hey, ryan! i'm having some trouble with a picture on my profile. i'm trying to add a picture as my "profile picture" but it is way too big and i want to shrink it. what should i do to do this? Aren't I Great?

  • If it were a user image, you could reupload the image as a smaller version of itself. But since it's not, you can specify the image's width like this: | image = -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:36, 23 September 2009 (EDT)

mohinder's ability

hey, ryan! i apologize for asking so many questions but i am just curious about certain events that are happening. anyways, when we saw Peter in the first episode of the fourth season, he ran down an alley and did a what seemed like a "super leap". Later, he said it was thanks to Mohinder. If this is true, then why isn't Mohinder's ability known as enhanced senses, or something similar, instead of super strength? Aren't I Great?

  • Actually, he said, "Being stronger, more agile--a little trick I picked up thanks to Dr. Suresh." Peter also has lots of other abilities that he may or may not be able to access. He may have been flying, even. It's really hard to say what he is able to do until we get a bit more information. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:56, 23 September 2009 (EDT)
    • I just took it to mean that he only had Mohinder's ability. -- Tristan0709 talk 01:03, 24 September 2009 (EDT)

Coupl'a things

Hey Ryan! So, I know I've been gone for a while over the hiatus, so sorry for kinda abandoning the wiki for a while there. Some things I just wanted clarification with: What's the consensus on where Sylar's history will go? And where does "Virtual" Sylar's history go? Oh, and just wondering your thoughts on the premiere. Back at its best, or not so much? -- Tristan0709 talk 01:03, 24 September 2009 (EDT)

  • I don't know if there's been any official consensus yet (or if there ever will be consensus, since our community's opinions are as varied, fractured, and bullheaded as Sylar himself!). But as far as I'm concerned, Nathan is dead. Everything that Adrian Pasdar does is what Sylar does. That's my opinion. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:47, 24 September 2009 (EDT)
    • I completely agree, I knew there was some disagreement before I left the wiki so just thought I'd check up. Thanks! -- Tristan0709 talk 07:35, 26 September 2009 (EDT)

Adamhiro

I think User:Adamhiro's vandal instincts are back. I really don't know what this guy is trying to do, but if you look at a few of his recent edits, he seems to be doing stuff he knows he's not supposed to. And while I would normally warn him on his talk page, I've stopped trying. --Radicell 09:17, 24 September 2009 (EDT)

Trevor Tanaka

Ryangibsonstewart,

I saw your reply. The character is indeed in a fuzzy place between HSG and istory. I look forward to seeing a consensus. You may also feel free to PM me on 9th wonders, we both have the same usernames there. Thanks again. -mrmichaelt

Hi

Hey Ryan. You might want to take a look at my talk page. Just a heads up.--Catalyst · Talk · HL 00:07, 26 September 2009 (EDT)

Edit warring a main location in one of the GNs

Please stop edit warring the main location where Scenic Route takes place. The location for almost the entire comic is Carlsbad, NM. NileQT87 21:18, 26 September 2009 (EDT)

  • An edit war is typically defined by a person changing a link at least three times. I have done it once. I'm not sure how that's an edit war. On the other hand, removing an afd with no apparent reason, is not allowed here at Heroes Wiki. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 21:19, 26 September 2009 (EDT)

Template

Hi Ryan,
I've created a template and tried to use it in this page. However when I say count=3, nothing appears. It works with all the other counts, but not with "3". I tried to fix in, in vain. Could you give me a hand in it? And also sorry for the tons of edits I'd to do, in order to succed in making the template... I was learning (if, ifeq, ifexist...).
Thanks a lot in advance,
Friendly,
Jan

  • No worries about the tons of edits--we all have to learn the coding somehow. Bravo for taking the time to learn it yourself! A few notes about the template: ifexist is a code to determine whether or not a link exists on the wiki. So returns "this link exists". On the other hand, returns "this link doesn't exist". Therefore, when you replace count with 3, the template is searching to see if there is a link on the wiki for "3". There isn't. However, there is a link for 1, 2, and other numbers. Try changing ifexist to just if, which just checks to see whether you've inputted that code or not. Let me know if you still get stuck. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 09:50, 28 September 2009 (EDT)
    • It was enlightening. I'll try it now. Thank you Ryan. --Janrodrigo 13:27, 28 September 2009 (EDT)
      • I've tried if before. But then this and this happens. In the template I created, {count} stands for each count specific to every episode, gn or iStory etc., similar to what we use in this wiki. {countt} stands for "count total" without considering whether it's an episode, GN or Heroes Evolutions. {countm} stands for "count mention", to count the people mentioned or seen in a photo of a specific episode or GN etc... And {countmt} stands for "count mention total", same with {countm} but for mentions. What I want to have:

* {name} ({count}, {countt}) ; if there is an appearence OR
* {name} ({countm}, {countmt}) ; if there is a mention or someone seen in a picture etc..
What I mean I need "this" or "that" structure. But when I use if, both of them happens. That's why I used ifexist in the first place. Therefore what can I do? --Janrodrigo 15:05, 28 September 2009 (EDT)

  • Okay, it should work now. Let me know if it's still not doing what you want it to do. The biggest issue I'm seeing is that you're sometimes mixing up the mentions and the appearances. For instance, with Zach on Week 9, you've inputted a total count as well as a total mention count. Shouldn't it be an appearance tally (count) and an appearance total (countt), or mention tally (countm) and a mention total (countmt)? -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:58, 28 September 2009 (EDT)
    • You're wonderful. Thank you so much. If it would be me, I couldn't do what you did :) You took so much trouble. Now it's working. I don't understand exactly how, but I wouldn't want to give you trouble of explaining in details. Just one question.. What's the difference between {something} and ? And I'll work in correcting the page asap. It's as you said; count & countt OR countm & countmt. By the way, I haven't watch the new episode yet. I'm curious what's coming now...

Thank you so much, again :)
Friendly,
--Janrodrigo 03:13, 29 September 2009 (EDT)

  • It's not showing. I meant (((something))) and (((something|))), but in those strange parantheses. But it doesn't show when I write like that. --Janrodrigo 03:16, 29 September 2009 (EDT)
    • What's funny is that the very reason the code isn't showing up on this page explains the difference! :) {foo} simply means to input the variable "foo". But {} means to input the variable "foo", and that if nothing is inputted, then nothing is used as a default. The pipe simply means that anything after it is the default. So, you can actually specify what the default is by typing something after the pipe. For instance, {Jan} will return Jan, unless I input something specific for foo. A good example of where this is used is on a template like Template:Minornavcell. The template requires you to specify the season number. But if you don't specify the season, it uses "4" as a default, since we're in the fourth season right now.... Hope that helps. It's no trouble at all. I always enjoy helping people understand template coding better, because I had some very good helpers who explained things to me when I was learning it all, and I really appreciated it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:43, 29 September 2009 (EDT)

James Walker

i'm really hoping that james walker will come back at least in flashbacks because we never really knew much about him. what are the chances that he can come back? --I.absorb.abilities 19:03, 28 September 2009 (EDT)Aren't I Great?

  • In Heroes? The chances are always quite good! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:07, 28 September 2009 (EDT)

Timeline touch-up!

So I was checking out the wiki, and I ran across the Timeline sector. I see that it has been split into several parts (Oct. '06, Nov. '06, Dec '06-Feb. '07, March '07, Post March '07). At the bottom of the Post March '07 page we start a July or August '07 header...do you think it would be better to just give this sector its very own page as Post July (or August) '07? Man I hope that made sense...--Anthony Gooch 19:39, 28 September 2009 (EDT)

  • It did make since and it would probably be Post June (or July) '07 because if it is post July, then the July part couldn't be on there...~~IHHTalk 19:57, 28 September 2009 (EDT)

Gretchen

hey its BLood69. Sorry, I didn't know Gretchen was gay, I just guessed even before I found out Claire was going to kiss a girl. Sorry about the reveal, it wasn;t spoiler but an actual guess. Then I went looking for fanfiction about the two of them and found out Gretchen kissed Claire. Still wasn't sure about her being a lesbian, though, still you removed the theory. Didn't mean ton cause problems. Blood69 06:49, 29 September 2009

  • No problems at all. I just wanted to make sure that there are no spoilers on theory pages. But good guess, in that case! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 08:34, 29 September 2009 (EDT)
