|Jennie Bowman writes in her diary about how much she loves the carnival. She reveals that she always wanted to see a carnival and that she cannot believe she is living in one. She writes about all of her new friends, including Aiden who, like her, has already discovered his power. Jennie then writes about how her father, Chris, does not like the carnival and about how she wishes she could change his mind.
Jennie then returns to the trailer but stops when she hears her parents fighting. Gail argues with Chris, saying that she trusts the carnival and likes having a home instead of having to stay with complete strangers. Chris tells her that they do not know Samuel any more than they knew Markus. Gail says that she likes living at the carnival and that she does not want to leave. Jennie decides that she does not want to hear her parents fighting anymore so she runs away.
Jennie wanders through the carnival and finds her friends hanging around Aiden. Aiden calls Jennie over and scrunches up his face in concentration. He then rises into the air a few inches and then a few feet. He successfully hovers three feet above the ground before falling back to earth. He tells his friends that he meant to do that and then notices that Jennie is upset. He asks her what's wrong and she tells him that her parents were fighting. Aiden says that it sucks when parents fight and tells her that his fight all the time. Jennie's other friend, Jack, tells her that his father is always angry at himself despite being the most powerful telekinetic at the Carnival. Jennie is comforted by the fact that lots of parents fight and then decides to head home.
On her way home, she spots Lydia, who looks as if she has been crying. Jennie asks her what's wrong and Lydia turns to see who spoke. She is relieved to see that it is only Jennie and insists that she is okay. Jennie tells her that she looks like she has been crying and Lydia just tells her that she has been thinking about things. Lydia tells her that she is trying to talk to someone but they don't want to talk to her. Jennie tells Lydia that if she really loves the person she wants to talk to, she will keep trying to contact them so that they know she is serious. Lydia tells Jennie that she is very smart and Jennie shows her a heart necklace containing a photo of Gail. She explains that Gail gave it to her while they were on the run so that if they were ever separated, it would be as if Gail was still with her. Lydia tells her that she is a lovely child and then asks her how she likes the carnival. Jennie is thrilled to tell her how much she enjoys living there and Lydia asks if Jennie ever wishes she could have a normal life. Jennie begins to talk about persecution and Lydia recognizes Samuel's speech, guessing that he has spoken with Jennie's family. Lydia tells Jennie that she should go home and spend time with her mother. Jennie agrees and leaves.
Jennie goes behind the hall of mirrors and practices using her ability. She produces a large flame and then exclaims that she did it. A voice tells her that she is impressive and Jennie turns to see a young girl about her age. Jennie tells her that she shouldn't have wandered into restricted areas and Deeana tells her not to worry about it. She proposes that they become best friends and asks for Jennie's phone number. Jennie tells her that she doesn't have a phone and Dee is shocked. She gives her her phone and tells her not to worry about it, as her parents will buy her a new one. Deeana leaves and Jennie is a little confused.
The Watcher appears and comments on how they're not supposed to have phones. Jennie tries to hide it but The Watcher tells her that it is good that she and her family have a phone and that she will need it. Jennie isn't sure what he means and The Watcher asks her if she would like his help in making her parents stop fighting. Jennie tells him that she would and he takes the phone and leaves a message for them. He instructs Jennie to go home and give her parents the message for him.
Jennie goes home and her parents ask her how her night was, trying to cover up their argument. Jennie tells them that she doesn't want them fighting anymore and Gail tries to say that they weren't. Jennie gives her the phone and tells her that the message will help. Gail listens to the Watcher talk about how he has been watching them for some time. He tells them that he knows about Mary Krause. He comments that she was so innocent and says that he will be seeing them soon. Gail tells Chris that someone knows about Mary and Chris demands to know who gave Jennie the message. Jennie can see that something is terribly wrong and says that she only wanted to help. She begins to cry and tells them that the man said that he would stop the fighting. Gail and Chris exchange glances, both knowing that there will be no more fighting because now, they have to protect their secret.
