This page notes the different possible versions of chapter 4 of The Civilian.
All cases (I)
Rachel Mills finds herself in the Bennets' home, with Claire Bennet staring at her. Claire says that Rachel isn't supposed to be there, since she has a "free pass". Rachel realizes that she is reliving a previous experience.
Options (I)
The player can choose what Rachel says to Claire.
Option 1A (Say to Claire that she isn't real)
Rachel asks the dream-Claire where she had hidden Alex. However, Claire responds that she won't tell her, since Alex is afraid of her.
Option 1A.1: "I've changed, you can tell me now..."
Option 1A.2: "I was afraid of you too..."
Option 1A.3: "Tell me now, it's a dream..."
Rachel pleads for Claire to trust her, but Claire states that Alex is still afraid of her. Rachel then wakes up from her dream.
Rachel admits that she was also afraid of Claire the last time they met. Claire says that Rachel should be afraid, and that the next time she and Alex see her, they'll kill her.
Rachel pleads to herself to wake up from her dream. Claire flatly states that it's not a dream, saying that Alex could be hiding right underneath Rachel's bed.
Option 1B (Apologize to Claire for what Rachel did that day)
Rachel says to Claire that she's sorry for what happened when Rachel stormed into the Bennet house. Claire asks why Rachel is still hunting Alex, and Rachel looks down at her feet and sees her hands covered in blood.
Option 1C (Threaten Claire that Alex will be found)
Rachel remembers the scene like it was yesterday: she had stormed into the Bennet house, and demanded Claire to tell her where Alex was hidden. She remembers Jason, her partner, looking around the bedrooms. All of a sudden, however, the dream-Claire has been replaced by a dream-Alex, who looks at Rachel in fear.
Option 1C.1: "You're safe..."
Option 1C.2 (Tell Alex to calm down)
Option 1C.3: "I'm sorry for what I did..."
Alex laughs and says that they are not safe. Rachel says that the whole Building 26 thing is over, but Alex says that this is only the beginning of everything.
As Rachel begins to awaken from her dream, dream-Alex leans in and tells Rachel that he knows where she is.
Rachel says that she is sorry, but Alex doesn't believe her. Rachel tries to convince Alex, but she is already waking up from her dream.
All cases (II)
Rachel begins hearing a voice calling her "Honey!" She wakes up, startled, and covered in sweat. Leona sits next to her, comforting her. She tells Rachel that she's okay.
Options (II)
The player can now choose what Rachel says to Leona.
Option 2A: "Ugh, bad dream."
Rachel passes it off as a bad room, and Leona playfully suggests that it could be the doing of a dream manipulator, or a manifestation of precognition inside Rachel. Rachel groans for Leona to stop. Outside, motorcycle engines roar, and Leona says that the bikers are here, and leaves, but not before reminding Rachel that there are people sleeping in the backyard again.
Option 2B: "The dreams are back. Why now?"
Leona asks what the new dreams are back, and Rachel explains that they're about some fugitives she had hunted. All of a sudden, motorcycle engines roar outside, and Leona says that the bikers are here, and leaves, but not before reminding Rachel that there are people sleeping in the backyard again.
All cases (III)
Rachel meets the two kids who camped out in the backyard of her house. They are Mykah and Cole, fraternal twins. The three of them watch as the bikers zoom past them, into the city. Rachel asks Mykah and Cole about why they are here. Mykah says that they're looking for their cousin, Amber, who has gone missing. They followed the bikers here, with hopes that Amber might be found. They insist that something has happened to Amber.
Options (III)
The player can choose what Rachel says to the twins, and what Rachel does afterward.
Option 3B: "I should check my mail before I head into town..."
Rachel heads inside her house and checks her messages. To her disappointment, she doesn't find any messages. Rachel then exits her room and enters the living room of her house (jump to Option 3E).
Option 3E: "I need to stop inside before we head out..."
Rachel enters her house, and finds that her living room now looks like a bachelorette pad, thanks to Leona. She recalls her childhood and the time she spent with Leona as a child. The player can now choose what Rachel does.
Option 3E.2 (Go to Leona's room)
Rachel enters Leona's room, which sports comfortable grown-up furniture, file cabinets, a military-spec map on the wall, and shelves of souvenirs: pictures of people with '70s haircuts, ticket stubs from ancient concerts, and an assortment of other things. Rachel notes that most of the souvenirs are probably from Leona's time as "Ellen". Rachel then wonders what's in the file cabinets, and the battered computer sitting on the desk.
Rachel then returns to the living room. (jump back to Option 3E)
Option 3E.3 (Go to Tim's house)
Rachel heads over to Tim's house. Tim sheepishly greets her. Rachel asks Tim if he's seen Leona, and Tim says that he thinks she's at Mable's Diner. Rachel thanks Tim, and when Tim hopefully asks Rachel if she needs anything else, Rachel flatly says goodbye. Rachel then returns to her house. (jump back to Option 3E)
