Here the pannels of the tapestry are in the proper order. They are out of order in the linderman archive. Why? What does the text say in either/both orders?--ASEO 13:46, 26 February 2007 (EST)
Still no translation? --ASEO 09:17, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
- With a higher resolution, I can have my friends who studying Japanese at their colleges try to translate, but you can't see any of the kanji in this photo.--Bob 13:16, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
- A quick google gets me this, which while vague could be helpful. —Soleta 13:44, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
- If accurate, Interesting that an acient tapestry would mention America...I wonder if the order of the text in the two different layouts changes the meaning or gives a nifty clue.--ASEO 14:36, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
Got it!
Thanks to Frequency at berberber.com QUOTE: VERY INTERESTING. I'VE FOUND OUT THAT JAPAN HAD MANGA EVEN IN SUCH OLD TIMES. BUT THIS PICTURE LOOKS TO BE DRAWN LATER THAN EDO PERIOD TO ME. THIS STORY BEGINS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE.
KURA (A STORAGE; I DON'T KNOW WHY IT SAYS ABOUT A STORAGE HERE. BUT DOES IT SAY THAT HE TOOK OUT THE SWORD FROM A STORAGE? XDD) THE SWORD 聖武, SEIMU (PERHAPS) I'M GOING TO LEAVE FROM THIS ISLAND (HIS HOMETOWN OR SOMETHING) TO HAVE A PARCTICE OF MARTIAL ARTS (IN OTHER WORDS, LIKE, TO BECOME SAMURAI) AGAIN. SO I LOOK FOR THE PLACE WHERE I SHOULD GO.
XXXX SHORE (I CAN'T READ, SORRY)
THE WEST OF WILLOW TREE (THIS MAY BE A NAME FOR PLACE..OR AN AMBIGUOUS EXPRESSION TO POINT OUT "SOMEWHERE", THIS PHRASE DOESN'T HAVE ANY SPECIFIC MEANING. A POETIC EXPRESSION.)
I COME BACK HOME AFTER I MADE A MATCH AND NOW I'M VERY COMFORTABLE. I WAS GIVEN THE GREAT TALENT AND "THE THOUGHT THAT HE AND HIS FAMILY CAN PERCIVE/FEEL FROM HIS FAMILY NAME"..(IT SAYS THAT HIS FAMILY HAS A GOOD TRADITION..LIKE THAT. I THINK YOU CAN ROUGHLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS EXPRESSION MEANS) FROM GOD.
I HOPE THIS HELP
So, this is what I make of it.
The Painting starts by telling how he took the sword from Linderman (storage), and goes on to say that he's leaving this place (the poster said his hometown, or this island. I'm thinking it's Manhattan, where the bomb goes off). He leaves to train in Martial Arts (Become a samurai, according to the poster).
"xxxx shore" is actually "Shore of America", according to this post on 9thwonders (who translated it about a week ago).
Interesting thoughts.--ASEO 15:09, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
