20th November 1963

Story

20th November 1963 We had a lead. We discovered our killer could be hiding out in an old abandoned warehouse several blocks away. Arthur, Harry, Charles and Susan set out to try and find him.

“Guys, this is it, come on, in here.” – Susan

“Is it safe?” – Charles

“We’re going after a psychopathic killer; of course it’s not safe!” - Arthur

“Susan, let the other know where we are, just in case something goes wrong.” – Harry

“OK, no problem.” – Susan

They waited for Susan to alert the other founders then the group entered the warehouse together. The warehouse was extremely dusty and very poorly lit. They entered and closed the door behind them.

“Clive! We know you’re here, come out!” – Arthur

As Arthur began calling out, flames appeared from one of the rafters.

“Get down!” – Harry

“I’ll take care of him.” - Charles

As the flames reached down and blocked the entrance, a beam became loose and began plummeting from the ceiling. As Charles was about to use his ability to subdue the killer, the beam fell on Charles and rendered him unconscious.

“Charles!” - Susan

“Susan, watch out!” - Harry

Susan dived out of the way and landed on a pile of rubble. Arthur reached out his hand and shot out a wave of energy. It knocked the man off the rafters and he landed on the rubble below, meters from where Susan lay. Arthur ran straight over to confront him when a burst of flames appeared and blasted him in the face. Arthur fell to the ground in agony. The man arose from the rubble and approached Susan. During the commotion Harry had managed to sneak up behind him. Harry reached out and grabbed his arm. The moment Harry and Clive touched, Clive suddenly began jerking.

“What’s wrong with you?” – Harry

“I………you………,ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” – Clive

A bright white light appeared around Clive and slowly shifted into Harry. Clive’s piercing screams were deafening. They suddenly stopped as the bright light vanished. Clive dropped to the floor, his skin suddenly a light shade of grey.

“Harry......what did you do?” – Susan

“I……I don’t know” – Harry

Harry stood speechless, trying to understand what had just happened. He suddenly began to feel a tingling in his fingers. He looked down, his hands were on fire.

“Oh my god Harry, your hands!” – Susan

“I can’t feel it. My hands are on fire and it doesn’t hurt. Guys, I think I took his power.” – Harry

“By the looks of things, you took a little more than just his power.” – Arthur

The group circled around the withered corpse on the floor. Looking down upon it, and then looking at each other. Was this what Angela meant by “necessary evil”? Would this always be the result of their efforts to save evolved humans? Would we always have to delve into the darkness to protect the innocent? And if so, why couldn’t we find the light?
