Zahava Gitelman is the mother of Hana Gitelman, and one of the first female pilots for the Israeli Defense Forces.
Character History
Zahava is one of the first female pilots for the IDF. In 1967 during the Six-Day War, Zahava shoots down two MiGs. In 1989, in Jerusalem, Israel, Zahava boards a bus. As the vehicle careens off the road in a suicide attack, Zahava is killed (along with Hana's grandmother - see below), leaving Hana to survive in the hospital, presumably alone.
Hana, wondering if she is "too reverent", imagines her mother joyously celebrating her triumphs in the Six-Day War—Zahava jumps around her jet waving the Israeli flag.
Notes
- It is unknown whether or not Hana's grandmother is Zahava's mother or mother-in-law.
