15 years ago, "Goose" and Drucker crash-land their plain in the Himalayas in Bhutan. They both parachute out, and are welcomed to live their by the monks. "Goose" lives there for 15 years, until he receives a visit from Bob. Bob interrogates "Goose" about the whereabouts of Drucker, first turning his arm to gold, when he doesn't answer; afterward turning his entire body to gold. Goose is last seen being carried out of Bhutan on a stretcher as a lifesize golden statue and being thrown into a vat of molten lava, left to melt.

  • The final frame of the novel shows Bob overlooking what appears to be Goose being melted down in a smelting factory.
