Hiro Nakamura goes to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial to commune with his grandfather. He brings an origami crane he has fashioned from the front cover of Action Comics #1 that his grandfather had given him. Hiro reflects on the legacy his grandfather created in surviving Hiroshima during World War II; Hiro feels he has done a disservice to his grandfather's memory. He vows to never let that happen again.
Trivia
- The Hiroshima Peace Memorial tower used in The Crane appears to be a replica of the "Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-Bomb" [1] located in Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima City, Japan.
- "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world." are the words inscribe on the Monument. These words, in honor of Sadako Sasaki, are actually written on the Children's Peace Monument, also located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
- It is common practice to place origami cranes throughout Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish.
