==Clock?== |

* Somebody on 9thWonders keeps saying the Symbol appeared on a clock at the High School in Homecoming, but I'll be damned if I can see it. Anybody else have any luck spotting it, or is this like the "ITS IN THE SAND WHEN NIKI BURIES THE BODIES" thing?--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 00:52, 29 November 2006 (EST) |

** I just went through the episode and I couldn't see The Symbol on a clock during any of the High School scenes. (Admin 01:08, 29 November 2006 (EST)) |
***I definitely saw the Symbol in a cloud when Nathan was flying. And it was in the water that Ted boiled, too. Yeah, and in the eggs Charlie was serving. Oh, and if you wrinkle up Peter's shirt just right, you can see the Symbol! :) Ryangibsonstewart 02:03, 29 November 2006 (EST) |

**Whenever there's a close-up of the clock at an angle, the glass cover reflects some of the numbers and distorts it. One of the close-ups has a distorted '2' on it that I'm guessing might have been mistaken for the symbol. (Reubs1 04:17, 29 November 2006 (EST)) |

***Whoa, I noticed that Peter's scar after falling with Sylar resembles the symbol quite a bit, but there's too much blood to see the whole thing... (Reubs1 04:26, 29 November 2006 (EST)) |

== Appearance of The Symbol? == |

*According to Wikipedia, The Symbol has appeared "as a decorative object in the Bennets' home." Anyone able to see what it's referring to or even get a screencap if it does exist? (Admin 18:41, 28 December 2006 (EST)) |
*Someone over on "9th Wonders" suggested that perhaps the icons placed on Ted's laptop in the "preview" also formed the symbol. For the hell of it, I took a screencapture and "connected the dots". Check it out: Ted's Laptop --Yoshie <small>(talk)</small> 11:54, 25 January 2007 (EST) |

:::Perhaps, but it's no more of a stretch than the pasta or the stick. It's all in how you interpret. --Yoshie 14:38, 25 January 2007 (EST) |
::::* True, I didn't even fully believe the pasta was the symbol. The stick isn't a stretch at all. With this layout of icons, I don't think it'd form the symbol because it wouldn't extend past that top rung, since there is no icon.--Riddler 14:42, 25 January 2007 (EST) |
::*I'm just not buying the desktop icons. All other occurances have been connected. Also, the top line is misleading since an extra icon would have to have been added in order to connect the dots. Besides, I don't even think the (wrongly) connected dots look like the symbol. But that's just me. :) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 14:47, 25 January 2007 (EST) |
:::*I see the desktop icons --- whoever connected the dots did it funky --- the two prongs are on top not bottom and the one is one bottom not top . |
::::*okay i am back to my senses --- it is not the symbol |

== Symbol on Niki's Map == |
I recently read on a fansite that the symbol appeared on Niki's map she found in the trunk of the red car (telling her where to take the bodies of the Linderman's thugs). I couldn't tell from the version of Don't Look Back I saw on NBC, but their quality is not very good. Anybody see the symbol there? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:14, 3 January 2007 (EST) |

== Best Translation of the "Symbol" == |
By far the best explaination for the symbol's meaning comes from here: |
In Episode 12 "Godsend", Ando say that the Symbol is made of two kanji : SAI and YO. Here's what i found about those Kanji (Chinese character also used in Japanese). |
First, take a look at the picture in attachment. The first kanji is SAI. In the episode, the translation call it "Great talent". The real meaning of this kanji is Ability, Talent (other meanings not related to the show is omited here). |
The other kanji is YO. The translation call it "Godsend". The real meaning of this kanji which is closer is actually "Reward" or "Granted". I can also mean "to cause" (used as a verb). - WeirdoBc |
* Since Hiro and Ando explicitly interpreted the symbol this way, shouldn't we add images of these kanji to the symbol article?--E rowe 10:25, 23 January 2007 (EST) |
** Yes, either from the episode itself (I recall that ando points out the characters on a scroll) or from a higher-quality picture. This may need to have its own section on the page. --Orne 11:50, 23 January 2007 (EST) |
*** The Kanji symbols should definitely be added with a good explanation. I suggest not using a screencap in this case (or at least using a screencap alongside a "real" image). - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:49, 23 January 2007 (EST) |

== The "Symbol" on Niki/Jessica == |
What is the basis for saying Jessica has the symbol and Niki doesn't?--E rowe 17:31, 23 January 2007 (EST) |
* They've shown Niki's bare shoulder without it and Jessica's bare shoulder with it ... most notably, when she seduces Nathan, she has it, but when she wakes up the next morning, she doesn't. It also shows up during the middle of her fight with DL in "Better Halves", and throughout "Fallout".--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 17:33, 23 January 2007 (EST) |
* In episode "Don't Look Back", at 11:53, when Niki awakens in her garage to find the mutilated bodies of the thugs, the symbol is on the left side of Jessica's face when she holds her index finger in front of her mouth asking for secrecy from the broken mirror.--RicSantiago 10:37, 24 March 2007 (EDT) |

**** I dunno. It kinda looks like The Symbol, more than a lot of them ... but the early appearances of the Symbol weren't even a little bit sneaky ... they pretty much hit you over the head with it (the one in the pool, Claire's book, the Haitian's necklace, etc.). This would have been the very first appearance of the Symbol (and the only appearance in Genesis at all, since the scene appears the same in DLB as in Genesis), and it's backwards, and I don't see a rung on the top bit. It just looks like a streak of blood with two drips. I think it's probably just a coincidence. I just have a hard time believing the producers would put in that subtle a reference to something that nobody had seen yet. If it was in Fallout, it would be one thing, but it's a pretty lousy first appearance ... especially considering they didn't exactly ease into it in Don't Look Back. My guess is that the Symbol is something they came up with after they shot the pilot, which was done a long while before they started shooting the series (and with different producers and not all the writers on board yet.)--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 13:11, 24 March 2007 (EDT) |

I just noticed that the symbol on the hilt of the replica sword faces the opposite direction of every other occurrence of the symbol, including the one on the hilt of future Hiro's sword. ** Weirder still: it's normal in the shot of the armor, and flipped in the close-up one second later. Sounds like either a production problem, or it's reversed on the other side of the hilt.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 15:27, 25 January 2007 (EST) |

The article says the Symbol can be seen "on the first axel of the car Hiro and Ando are hiding under while trying to escape thugs" (The Fix). Is anybody else seeing this, or am I just so myopic that I'm overlooking something so obvious. Can we grab a screencap for Grandpa Ryan over here? * I've seen the screencap. To say it's a stretch would be polite. There's a curved hose or oil line or something, no visible rungs. I can get a cap, but it's "in the sand when Niki buries the thugs" all over again, IMHO.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 14:48, 3 February 2007 (EST) |

** Here it is, with the most favorable light level adjustment I could make. The hose clip could be one rung, but that's it. A curve and one rung does not the Symbol make. |

==Merge appearances with gallery?== |

Should we do away with the text list of appearances and just merge it with the gallery? * You seem ... forgetful tonight. :) ... Yes, that sounds right to me. It's pretty redundant. We should probably leave Ando's explanation alone, though. — <font color=#0147FA>RyanGibsonStewart</font> (<font color=#0147FA>talk</font>) 00:48, 12 February 2007 (EST) |

** Like I said, I must have overdone the nutmeg in the Alfredo sauce tonight or something. In any case, the only problem is that the gallery will be right up under the sidebar. I'll try inserting a <code><br clear="all"></code>, but if it's too distracting, we might need some kind of filler at the top of the article. Maybe a regular history section, since the Symbol has only been acknowledged once so far.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 00:55, 12 February 2007 (EST) |

***Yeah, I don't think it'll be too distracting. But if it is, we can always scoot the Notes/Trivia up there — or better, Ando's explanation. ****Now it bugs me that the descriptions are all fragments but have terminal punctuation. Should we delete the periods, de-frag the descriptions, or change the lead in to "The symbol is found..." and the descriptions to "...on the mole on Uluru's Girlfriend's chin."?--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 01:12, 12 February 2007 (EST) |
*****Actually, they're technically not fragments. Since the description before the entire gallery already says "The Symbol is found:", then anything following that would be a completion of that sentence, even if (and especially if) they're capitalized. I think it's fine as is, but if you want to change each caption, that's fine, too. I would actually prefer each caption to be a sentence, but it seems like more work than I'm willing to put in right now. :) — <font color=#0147FA>RyanGibsonStewart</font> (<font color=#0147FA>talk</font>) 01:21, 12 February 2007 (EST) |

*The Haitian as a young boy? I'm assuming that's from tonight's episode. The Niki's sand/dead bodies reference was just added to Wikipedia today -- it's either from tonight's episode, or way back from episode 2 or 3. I think that topic came up way back when and we decided there was no symbol in the sand, though it wouldn't hurt if somebody wanted to go and take a second look. ***** I actually do buy the dolphin, and I'm normally a massive symbol skeptic. I can't imagine they'd go to all the trouble of making a big, curved ice sculpture just for set dressing--if it's real ice, they would have needed several because they'd melt fairly quickly under the lights, and good fake resin ice is tricky to make. It would be a lot of effort for nothing.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 00:58, 3 March 2007 (EST) |

****** I think the dolphin is stretching it. Personally I have yet to see an image of it where it looks like The Symbol to me rather than just a dolphin. Sure it's curved and has features that perhaps you could stretch into representing The Symbol, but it doesn't seem conclusive enough to add to the article. **** I don't think it's necessary to list every time the Haitian's necklace is shown, or every time the cover of Activating Evolution is shot....at least not on this page. This article is for chronicling all the places the symbol appears--I don't think it's necessary to list every time there is a cut to Jessica's tattoo. — <font color=#0147FA>RyanGibsonStewart</font> (<font color=#0147FA>talk</font>) 21:16, 5 March 2007 (EST) |

**<s>6MA might be tricky, too. It's not seen on Jessica's shoulder when she threatens Hal because her stupid hair is in the way. It's not on Chandra's map. The Haitian doesn't appear. I don't recall if anyone looks at Activating Evolution though.</s> Yeah, it's in 6MA at least twice.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 03:26, 14 March 2007 (EDT) |

== Parasite Scales == |
Okay --- I threw this one around a lot --- and don't really know --- the scales on Mohinders desk when it is about to pan out of the scene --- have two pencils and the edge of the laptop that makes it look "sorta" like the helix--- I wanted a second opinion --- and a screencap if anyone can do that. and oh by the way --- i think that dolphin looks so much like the helix it should be added as a possible example --- if you guys want to create that thread. Guy 16:04, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
* I think the scales are just incidental. There are times earlier in the scene where the pencils cross the balance beam, but there's never a third "rung" on the other side (the edge of the laptop is a pretty huge stretch). That, and the fact that the balance beam of the scale is symmetrical left-to-right, and not s-curved like the symbol, make me think it wasn't intentional.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 16:14, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
**Yeah that is what I thought two ---- but the dolphin really has me going now |
***I tend to agree. At least it's curved the right way (unlike the car parts, which are reversed), has sticky-out bits on both parts of the curve (unlike the scales), and is a complete curve with no gaps (unlike Nathan's desk or Ted's icons.)--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 16:22, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
****Can't we do possible symbol sightings --- I thought I heard something like that there has been over one hundred of the symbols presented in the series already. I mean --- the door --- i would have never seen that ----the only ones ive seen on my own is the pool, the computer, and obvious ones, like when the Hatian holds the necklace or the hilt of the sword in the museum. |
***** It seems reasonable. The new page would belong in :Category:Theories. Though it could get crazy just like the Theories do. (Admin 16:39, 9 March 2007 (EST)) |
****** yeah cool how do you start something like that? |
****** I'm not sure it would hurt to have a separate "possible sightings" on this page, even. For one thing, it would encourage only sightings where people can get a screencap. For another, some of the ones on this page are pretty contentious (I still don't buy the Bennets' front door (it's curved the wrong way, and only vaguely symbol-like at that) and lots of people don't buy the pasta, though I think that one's pretty clear).--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 16:48, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
******* I was just worried that the page might fill up more quickly and the talk become full of discussions on possible sightings. Was thinking it would be cleaner to have a separate page and then include a link here to the possible sightings. As for the front door, it really looks like The Symbol to me... you're right it's backwards, though from the inside it would be correct. :) Hardvice, do you have the episode in HD? Check it out frame by frame, you might find a version that looks clearer to you. (Admin 16:54, 9 March 2007 (EST)) |
******** Re the front door.. They show the door multiple times and only that time is there any kind of symbol or anything visible. It's a complete S-shape, and it's got the rungs in the proper places. If it wasn't deliberate, it's pretty serendipitous.. even more than the car part --Frantik (Talk) 17:24, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
********* Like the car part, it's backwards. Also, while it looks sort of like the symbol in stills (though not all the rungs are connected to the backwards S), in motion it just looks like flickering lights. Even in HD, I still don't buy it.--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 18:49, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
********** On the car part, the "rungs" go across the S while on the door they're only on the appropriate sides. sure they don't connect but they the rungs don't touch directly on the pasta, the broken glass or the stones either. I think it's much more likely the door was intentional than the car part. I'll have to check out these scales though. :) --Frantik (Talk) 19:40, 9 March 2007 (EST) |
*********** The scales are really not worth it. The balance is shaped like a melodrama villain's handlebar mustache, not like an "s".--Hardvice <small>(talk)</small> 03:58, 10 March 2007 (EST) |
********** The swimming pool symbol is also backwards in the shot, but like the door it does depend on how the shot is taken. I think backwards instances of The Symbol are legitimate especially when they're so well-formed. (Admin 21:08, 26 March 2007 (EDT)) |
******** I really like the idea of a "Possible Appearances" section. Our talk page is already filled with discussions about possible sightings. * That's too much of a stretch. |
**I'd actually be curious to see a picture (mostly so I could ridicule it, but still...) If the smoke from a gun were in the shape of the symbol, it would most likely be done with CGI. That would be the first example of the symbol being created artificially rather than with physically. — <font color=#0147FA>RyanGibsonStewart</font> (<font color=#0147FA>talk</font>) 23:50, 14 March 2007 (EDT) |
