A massive nuclear explosion takes place in New York, NY on November 8th. First seen in a painting by Isaac Mendez, then viewed first hand by Hiro Nakamura while he was in the future, this is the foremost plot point of the series so far. It is likely connected to the "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" message. In Fallout it is shown that Manhattan is deserted prior to the explosion, and that all the heroes were at the scene. It is also shown that Peter Petrelli is the cause of the explosion, because he explodes a while later.
