Heroin is the name of a highly addictive illegal drug. The chemical mimics endorphins in the human body and thus causes a sense of well-being when entered into the bloodstream. The "high" feeling is very addictive, and can be very destructive to a user's persona as the desire for the drug can overrule other aspects of their lives.
The drug is typically administered intravenously via a syringe. As with any needle-based drug, the syringe needs to be properly sterilized to prevent additional blood-borne infections. Unfortunately, when a substance abuser is addicted, they are more focused on acquiring the "high" and, if sharing needs with other users, the user can become infected with many life-threatening illnesses, such as HIV.
About
On the show Heroes, the character Isaac Mendez is addicted to the drug heroin. In the unaired pilot In His Own Image, Isaac's addiction is so severe that he actually cuts off his own hand to get to his drugs.
Controversy with NBC
There has been some controversy over the character Isaac's use of heroin on the show Heroes. It is rumored that NBC executives were not pleased with the character's reliance on an illegal substance in order to access his special abilities, and they pressured the writers to accellerate Issac's rehabilitation.
