Difference?

• What's the difference between this and Template:epp? I know epp creates links like this: (The Line), but {{ep|206|true}} does the same thing. So, do we need both?--  Lost Soul   talk  contribs  15:38, 4 November 2007 (EST)
  • Not really. It looks like the reflexes formerly only on epp are also now on this. (Actually, I take that back -- epp just invokes this template with the |true reflex, so that reflex has always been here) Of course, since most people don't subst: this template, we'd have to update all of the links from epp to ep|true before we could get rid of epp.--Hardvice (talk) 15:46, 4 November 2007 (EST)
    • I think we could go a step further, and make it so this template automatically italicises, reducing any need for you to put {{epp|206|true}} at all. So, if you have {{ep|206}} it'll automatically make (The Line) or whatever. The only problem I see is with the many places that use template:epp; if we redirected that template to this one, would that solve it?           • Actually, the |true reflex on this one is used by epp, which is {presumably) why it's not documented. What I was saying above, though, is that the many, many places where epp is used don't have |true (since that's a reflex of this template). If we just convert epp to a redirect, all of the (Genesis)es will convert to Genesises.--Hardvice (talk) 15:57, 4 November 2007 (EST)
          • And the reason there are two separate templates is that, in some cases, you just want the name of the episode without formatting (if you're using it in a template, or in the middle of a sentence) and sometimes you want the parentheses and italics. In other words, we don't want {{ep|206}} to print (The Line) because that would give us sentences like "In the episode commentary for (The Line), Kay Foster says...", which is incorrect. It could all be combined in one if we used the |true reflex manually, but I think the idea was that ep vs. epp was easier to remember.--Hardvice (talk) 16:01, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Good News/Bad News

The good news is that I modified the template to allow overrides of titles for things like ampersands and other special characters. The bad news is that doing so necessitated adding each episode/novel twice to prevent the nbl template from defaulting a blank override (since the pipe had to be outside the switch). However, this does let us include the namespace in the first reference, so as to avoid redirects (no big deal, but it's nice I suppose). The bottom line, though, is that we need to remember to add each new episode/novel twice--once for the link, and once for the linktext.--Hardvice (talk)
