This page records my workings on the In My Heart... letter puzzle:

1. The first sentence of the second paragraph is "You might think of this as a new beginning, but there are no beginnings and no endings.", so this step appears to mean to combine the text of the letter into a single string. Whether or not to remove the spaces, caps and punctuation is requires is unknown, so there's a lot of variables to this puzzle, assuming it is a hidden message puzzle.
2. The second sentence appears to be three parts.

• a. The first, "When we are pulled from the loop of our lives" appears to refer to pulling the characters of a word or words symbolizing "the loop of our lives". My progress on this is below, assuming that all punctuation and caps were to be removed, which is something we don't know:

• b. The second part of the second sentence, "the order of things becomes unbalanced", could mean a number of things:
  • 1. That the order of the words with the letters removed is mixed up
  • 2. That the order of the letters is reversed.
  • 3. That the order of letters in the word "things" needs to be changed to the order of the letters in the word "unbalanced". This is a kind of substitution cipher.
  • 4. That the order of letters in the word "things" is already in the order of "unbalanced". Thus, it requiring a kind of substitution cipher to reverse the substitution already done.
  • 5. That the order of the letters is ciphered in such a way that the code from the postcard is required to decipher it.

• c. The third and final part of the second sentence, "balance is something I have sought for years" could also mean a number of things:
  • 1. It could simply be part of step 2b
  • 2. That the cipher we need to use for the substitution is "something he has sought for years", from the videos, this could mean "democracy" or "education" or his motto "democratize survival!"

Tasks to be done:

• Check the above with new javascript program from the postcard
• Repeat the above with a version of the letter with the caps preserved
• Try using the Colgate Univ. substitution program for ciphering
