Wyatt Izzard, commonly known as "The Scavenger" was a data entry clerk in the Kirby Plaza building in New York City, living a fairly boring life. Constantly struggling with money, he had "terrible luck", leading most of the electronic equipment around his apartment to slowly fall apart. A crack spider-webbed across his iPod, his laptop's hinge slowly peeled back, and his phone would cease to function every now and then.
One autumn night in 2006, he was working after hours. After hearing commotion both above and below him, he decided to take a break and walk around the empty floor. He finally wound up at a window overlooking the plaza itself. Ignoring the fistfight on the ground, he looked skyward, hoping to find some calm in the night sky. Getting impatient, he turned to head back to his cubicle, when he heard a tremendous explosion. He ran to the window to see that a bomb had gone off in the night sky. As he leaned up against the window, it suddenly disappeared, and Wyatt found himself falling out a 23rd-story window, along with some glass shards. The ground was coming up fast, and then...
Wyatt woke up half-naked on the plaza. He looked around and noticed that not only was it morning, but there was no blood on the ground, and he was not injured at all. Still surrounded by glass shards, and an assortment of fibers and dust, Wyatt quickly got up, and ran home.
After getting home, Wyatt found that anything he touched would crumble and collapse. His own bed could not comfort him, as it turned to dust on contact. He packed some things, put on several coats and gloves so as to put some layers between him and his last remaining possessions, and left home.
Living on the streets for months, Wyatt eventually found himself begging for food. By chance, he had a run-in with another homeless man, who seemed to have a bizarre condition as well. He did not remember seeing him arrive, but the sleeping man would slowly fade in and out of visibility. After shaking him awake (and accidentally disintegrating the man's coat), the man irritatedly introduced himself as Claude. He had no intention of sticking around, now that he was seen, but he gave Wyatt some pointers on how to stay alive on the streets, as well as showing him how to get a little bit of control over his ability.
Several months later, he found himself wandering through New Jersey, passing a large building named Pinehearst. Pondering whether or not he could go back to a normal life, he saw a familiar man fall out of a seventh-story window (quipping on how that seemed to be happening more and more those days), and after hiding in the bushes overheard the fallen man say that a man inside could take powers away.
While Wyatt was originally going into the building to have his ability removed, the man in charge, who introduced himself as Arthur Petrelli, instead offered him a job. Wyatt wasn't sure how Arthur knew he would be looking for a job eventually, but he agreed to take a job.
Just then, a blonde woman, looking a little... staticy, walked in asking for Arthur's help. Arthur seemed to peer at her, when she suddenly fell unconscious. Arthur turned to Wyatt and asked him to -- carefully -- bring her upstairs. He reluctantly placed her into shackles attached to the floor, at Arthur's insistence that she was dangerous, and needed to be restrained for when she awoke.
