******* Ok, Ryan and I cleared up the ability categories. Graphic Novel Groups
- I agree with splitting off the graphic novel groups into a separate portal and adding a new category for them, but I disagree with making the category exclusive. I mean, just as Skyhawk is in both Category:Weapons and Category:Vehicles, I think the graphic novel groups should be both in Category:Graphic Novel Groups and either Category:Unnamed Groups or Category:Named Groups as appropriate. I'd like some other opinions.--MiamiVolts (talk) 14:52, 29 February 2008 (EST)
- That sounds reasonable to me. Really, it should be done however other GN-specific articles have been handled. For instance, I think all articles in Category:Graphic Novel Characters are also included in Category:Characters. Likewise, I'm pretty sure that all Category:Graphic Novel Abilities articles can also be found in Category:Abilities. It should be the same for groups, I think. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:19, 29 February 2008 (EST)
- Characters is a bit of a weird one, because all characters, in any category, are always in Category:Characters. AFAIK, that's the only instance in which articles belong to both a category and to that category's parent category, and it was done originally so we could have a "master list" of all characters (meaning originally both evolved humans and humans--we didn't even have GN content yet back then). I dislike the idea of an article belonging to both the parent cat and the child cat in most cases because it somewhat defeats the category structure we use most places. With groups specifically, I dislike it because it's not very future-friendly; eventually, we'll have categories and portals for Named GN Groups and Unnamed GN groups. If anything, those cats should be made now (and the portal left as-is until it's big enough to split). They should not be dumped back into the episode-specific cats. The fact that GN abilities are also in abilities strikes me as incorrect and unnecessary as well. GN Places are not Places, and GN Locations are not Locations. Using one exception and one recent overlooked mistake to justify it seems unwise. In fact, now that we have DPL, there's really no need to include any character articles in the parent category "Characters" any longer, either.--Hardvice (talk) 16:06, 29 February 2008 (EST)
- I didn't realize that Category:Unnamed Groups and Category:Named Groups were now intended to be Episode specific. If that's the case, then yes, I would prefer we create Category:Named GN Groups and Category:Unnamed GN Groups now.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:29, 29 February 2008 (EST)
- Honestly, it doesn't matter to me how it's done, so long as it's consistent. I wasn't using an exception to justify a change, I was just using the most recent episode→GN conversion I could think of. So long as everything matches each other, that's all that really matters to me. I don't have a preference one way or another for Category:Characters--I can see the reason for the exception and I can also see the obsoleteness of it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:57, 29 February 2008 (EST)
- Ok, I've added the categories, modified the autocat in Template:GNGroup to use those categories and allow a sortkey. I also modified Template:Group to autocat and allow a sortkey, and updated all the group entries appropriately. Finally, I've updated Template:Newpage group to list the navbars and their options. It should be consistent now.--MiamiVolts (talk) 20:02, 29 February 2008 (EST)
