Elle also said that she was 24, making the incident 18 years ago. This comes within a year of Claire's birth timeline, possible overlapping it if facts are slightly inaccurate. Meredith would have been a reasonably young mother (around 20) and from Season 1 is seen to be poor, in a trailer park. So it would make sense for her to be living with her mother (effectively Claire's grandmother). So if this was the case, the house that burnt down was not Meredith's, but her mothers.
