The Agent

In chapter 3 of The Agent, Rachel Mills and her partner, Jason, visit the beach Alex frequents following a lead given to them by the lead agent that is running the search for Alex Woolsly. They arrive near a local sand-side restaurant where the surf crowd hangs out when the surf isn't calling. Rachel spots a clump of young men and women in swimsuits draped over the wooden seats outside the restaurant, and begins to head toward them. Jason stops her and has her compare what they are wearing. Rachel then notes to herself that Jason and Rachel are in dark suits and glasses, while the surfer crowd is dressed in rags.

After being convinced by Jason, Rachel purchases and gets into a swimsuit, then approaches the surfer crowd on her own. Rachel talks with one of the guys, who has stringy blonde hair, who tries to pick her up for a drink, and one of the girls who is with him. She learns from the girl that both Alex and one of his friends, Liliane, have not been seen there lately. She gets Liliane's address from them and returns to Jason at the car, still wearing her swimsuit. Rachel tells Jason what she learned and has him drive them to Liliane's home.
