Upcoming interview

Jordan Kotzebue and Travis Kotzebue have agreed to an interview next week, Friday 7/27. They did the art for the How Do You Stop an Exploding Man? series, and Travis also did some of the art for Fathers & Daughters. It should be a phone interview, if all works out. Feel free to submit interview questions below. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:11, 21 July 2007 (EDT)

  • Due to scheduling conflicts, we are postponing the interview until Friday 8/3. Submit questions below. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:05, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
    • I just got off the phone with Travis and Jordan--great guys! No spoilers or inside information or anything like that, just some good insights into their work, their process, etc. I should transcribe the thing either tonight or tomorrow, depending on my schedule. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:35, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
      • Awesome, what about piecing together an Odagawa interview article/page? And did he ever reply regarding our part 3 and 4 questions?--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:43, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
        • I'll dig up the emails when I get a chance. He never replied to my last email--I sent it around the time he went to SDCC. Maybe I'll resend it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 13:44, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
          • That makes sense then, he probably mistook it for spam, as he must have had a lot of that by the time he made it back from the convention.--MiamiVolts (talk) 13:50, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

Interview Questions

  • How did you guys get into drawing comics?
  • Did you solicit NBC, or did they find you?
  • Did NBC offer the project to both of you? How did you decide who would do which parts?
  • What's it like working with your brother?
  • How do you coordinate your work?
  • You both have similar styles of art. Is that intentional or just a happy coincidence?
  • Travis, you did part of the art for Fathers & Daughters, and Micah Gunnell did the other half. Is there a reason two artists worked on the same novel?
  • What research did you do for your Heroes work?
  • Jesse Alexander and Aron Coleite wrote the Exploding Man series. What kind of directions did they give you, and where did you use more of your own creative license?
  • Did NBC give you any notes on your work? Was there anything you had to change?
  • Do you have any plans to do any more Heroes novels?
  • Travis, you did work for Ben 10, which also uses art run by the Man of Action artists that are working on graphic novels for Heroes this summer. Were your submissions for that show a cooperative effort with them? Did you offer them any advice for their summer series of Heroes novels?--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:57, 22 July 2007 (EDT)
  • Three questions:

1) Are any of your family involved in the arts (comic book kind or otherwise) or are you two the first artists in the family? 2) Who is the elder of the two of you? 3) How was it decided who would do what part in the Exploding Man series? SacValleyDweller 16:10, 28 July, 2007 (PDT)

Postpone?

I haven't heard back from the brothers yet, so there's a chance this might not happen tomorrow. We might have to postpone. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:29, 26 July 2007 (EDT)

  • To clarify, you mean that they haven't replied they got the questions, correct?--MiamiVolts (talk) 00:02, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
    • No. I'm doing a phone interview with them. I sent them all the information (phone number, time and date) and asked them to write me back to confirm, but they haven't done that yet. We'll see what happens. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 00:17, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
      • So you're sending them now another e-mail asking them to confirm 8/1?--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:07, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
        • I just got an email back from Travis. He said Jordan can't do it tomorrow and asked if we could set up a time next week. I emailed and asked if Wednesday 8/1 is okay. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:13, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
          • That's excellent news then--so it may be delayed but looks like it will happen.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:17, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
            • I think it's just a matter of coordinating schedules. I was a bit worried when I hadn't heard anything for awhile. But Travis's email tonight was reassuring. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:23, 27 July 2007 (EDT)
              • Jordan had to reschedule. It'll probably be on Friday. I thought about doing individual interviews, but I think it'd be so much better to interview both of them at the same time, which just means that much more scheduling issues. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:57, 30 July 2007 (EDT)
              • By the way, in other news, Paul C from 3 Heroes Podcast, has some pretty cool interviews lined up with some of the other artists. He's not making them public yet until they are a sure thing, so I don't feel at liberty to say who they are. However, he's agreed to give Heroes Wiki a transcribed copy, which I thought was very nice. I also posited a few questions for him that I thought we might be interested in. He's also going to try to get some artwork out of them. Look for more on that later... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:32, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Multicolored

Good idea, giving each person a different color for the interview.--MiamiVolts (talk) 17:54, 3 August 2007 (EDT)

  • Thanks--I was actually going to ask people's opinions on that before I got too far into transcribing, but I had to run (can't miss movie times, eh?)...Glad you like it. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:49, 3 August 2007 (EDT)
    • I really like it. Personally it makes it easier me to keep track of the different speakers even more effectively than prefixing the line with the speaker. You come to associate the color with a particular speaker so it seems more effective. Good call, Ryan. (Admin 00:47, 5 August 2007 (EDT))

Is this complete?

Ryan, is this done? Just wondering, so we can add it to the interview box on the main page versus the current version of Template:HWinterviews.--Bob 16:25, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

  • Ryan mentioned earlier that it's not done, and he's going to finish it later tonight along with trying to piece together an interview for Odagawa.--MiamiVolts (talk) 16:58, 4 August 2007 (EDT)
    • Heh, it's just the first five minutes of a 20-minute interview. More to come when I have a good hour or so to sit down tonight. Sorry, my electric drill calls me--gotta run! :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:08, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Epilogue

There's a couple of minutes more on the interview where the three of us just chew the fat about Kevin Smith, and how we're hoping that J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon do episodes of Origins. Travis is "a huge Firefly dork." I didn't think it was necessary to add that stuff, but I just wanted to let y'all know why it doesn't exactly end cleanly. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:16, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

  • Another very nicely done interview. It looks great. :) (Admin 00:45, 5 August 2007 (EDT))
    • Thanks. They're great guys, and it was a fun interview. We seriously laughed for so long at Travis's lion joke. I hope to see more from them... :) -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:17, 5 August 2007 (EDT)
      • If you're referring to the Monty Python reference he made, I found it funny, too. I'm a big Monty Python fan. (Admin 10:26, 5 August 2007 (EDT))
      • I think you ended the transcript at a good point. Had you not mentioned there was a couple more minutes, I probably would have thought there was just some short goodbyes afterwards (which is still close to reality). Oh, and if there is a lion in Season 2 I think we may be going back to Africa to revisit the story of Hana and the evil stomach-bacteria doctor that got away.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:21, 5 August 2007 (EDT)
        • You know, I'd actually love to learn a little more about Dr. Strauss, but that's just me. PS, I'll hopefully get to Frankenstein together an Odagawa interview tomorrow. Sorry, today's been really busy. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 01:31, 5 August 2007 (EDT)
          • Yeah, in addition to Sylar and the Being, I think he'd make an interesting villain for Season 2. Once again, I think you did a great job on the interview.--MiamiVolts (talk) 01:53, 5 August 2007 (EDT)
