Template talk:Welcome

Now that the Portal:New Users has links to all the basic help sections, would it be time to do some cleanup in this template I noticed when adding a link that it is getting rather lengthy. -- Cuardin 15:16, 29 January 2007 (EST)

  • I'd keep the help links, personally. That way, even if a user doesn't go to the new user portal, they have links for their later reference about how a Wiki works. But perhaps some of the other info could be moved to the portal.--Hardvice (talk) 15:25, 29 January 2007 (EST)
    • I won't go changing that template, but I definately feel that it needs some serious love. -- Cuardin 15:30, 29 January 2007 (EST)
      • I agree. It needs cleanup, but the original idea was to give people some useful links on their talk page, so they can always find them. It can probably be better formatted and streamlined, though.--Hardvice (talk) 15:33, 29 January 2007 (EST)
        • Agree, but I don't have any concrete ideas. I love the help box here - great idea. (Though, did you check this out - wow, that's weird to see...) - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:48, 29 January 2007 (EST)
          • Well, it is one link for every entry on a talk page... -- Cuardin 15:50, 29 January 2007 (EST)
            • Only because most people don't substitute the welcome template. That makes me nervous, since it makes it a huge target for mass vandalism.--Hardvice (talk) 16:13, 29 January 2007 (EST)
              • You're saying it's better to subs the page. Never thought of that. I'll try that next time... - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:00, 29 January 2007 (EST)
                • Well, it's nice if it's not substituted that it updates when we make changes. But that means someone can also edit the template, and suddenly six hundred people have goatse on their talk pages. It's easy enough to revert, but you just can't unsee goatse.--Hardvice (talk) 18:16, 29 January 2007 (EST)
          • I made an Template:Welcome/test1|attempt. It still feels very rough, though. -- Cuardin 16:07, 29 January 2007 (EST)

Substitute-Only?

  • Including rather than substituting this template is causing the section edit links on user's talk pages to be off by one. Should we make this into a substitute-only template?--Hardvice (talk) 02:12, 20 February 2007 (EST)
    • I didn't know you could make it a subst-only template. Sounds right to me, if that's the case. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 02:18, 20 February 2007 (EST)
      • Actually, it's kind of annoying. It only warns you that the template is meant to be substituted ... it doesn't actually stop you from adding it, IIRC.--Hardvice (talk) 02:35, 20 February 2007 (EST)
        • A warning is a good start, though. Let people know that it's only meant to be substituted. (Admin 02:40, 20 February 2007 (EST))
          • The problem is, if we get the warning working, all of the sudden all 900 people who have this template including instead of subbed will have a warning message at the top of their user page.--Hardvice (talk) 14:47, 20 February 2007 (EST)
            • How about adding a <includeonly>Category...</includeonly> to the Template, then go through everyone in the Category and convert the Template:Welcome to be a subst instead
              • We can just as easily use What Links Here since subs don't show up on it.--Hardvice (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2007 (EST)
  • We may not need to substitute to get the edit sections to work. see here. We may just need to make sure nothing is before the heading, would help with Template:Theories also. -Lөvөl 14:19, 5 June 2007 (EDT)
