Navigation

I don't think I've figured out everything about navigating the site yet. For example, are there main portals into the theories and spoilers sections anywhere. The way I usually get to them is either by clicking a link at the bottom of another page or in the recent changes list. --E rowe 18:33, 21 January 2007 (EST)

  • We haven't really gotten around to adding portals for theories and spoilers yet. Spoilers change so quickly that by the time we have them added, they're done, and theories is mostly just one big article. Also, neither really lends itself very well to graphic navigation ... pictures of spoilers would themselves be spoilers (and thus inappropriate for portals, which are accessed by everyone), and theories ... well, I can't really think of any good images for theories.

The easiest ways to navigate a wiki, aside from portals, are 1)bookmarks or 2)the search box. Usually, when I need to go right to a particular article and don't want to have to drill down through the portals, I use "search", but I've also got bookmarks to the "big" categories (Characters, Episodes, and such). Hope that helps.

As for the portals, if you have any ideas about a good way to do portals for spoilers or theories that's neither too hard to maintain nor too spoilery for general visitors, that would be great. I've been trying to come up with a good answer for a while, but I'm not having any luck.--Hardvice (talk) 19:01, 21 January 2007 (EST)
    • I googled images for "spoilers" and, aside from endless pictures of car spoilers, I saw this image from a Gray's Anatomy News site: http://greysanatomynews.com/wp-content/spoilers-ahead.jpg
      • Hmmm. That would work to get folks to Category:Spoilers, and I guess they can just follow the links from there. That's a pretty good idea. I was thinking about how to add a portal for the individual spoiler articles, but I'm not really sure we need to do that, now that you mention it.--Hardvice (talk) 19:08, 21 January 2007 (EST)

Starting a new page

To start a page, click on a red link. For instance, clicking on 9 will bring you to a new edit page. Then just start typing away! Make sure you check out Help:Style first to get some ideas of formatting and style standards. But if you don't get it correct right away, don't worry about it. Others will edit and help you out. :) As for making it part of the theories category, just type [[Category:Theories]] at the bottom of the page, and it will automatically be added for you. I'm going to be online for the next little while — if you need some help, just let me know. Good luck! - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 18:02, 28 January 2007 (EST)

Hey, E rowe - great job on the Nine page! I'm sure it'll get changed around and edited a whole bunch, but that's the fun of a wiki, isn't it? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 19:37, 28 January 2007 (EST)

Abandoned Refinery

I see that you've done a lot on the abandoned refinery page. How do you know it's a refinery and not something else?--E rowe 16:46, 30 January 2007 (EST)

I think it's actually an old oil derrick. Somebody else actually started the name. I think it's fine to call it a refinery, though - the point is it's abandoned. But feel free to change it if you find out more about it. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:52, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Screen Caps

Is there a way to screen cap the videos from NBC's website or other online sources? Or does everybody here just do that with DVR's? I recall a promotional video with a fake Mohinder interviewing ordinary people with ordinary (but weird) abilities. The recent talk about the "official" name of the power to manipulate plants has inspired me to make a fan creation page with silly official names for those abilities.--E rowe 23:16, 18 April 2007 (EDT)

  • You can screencap videos from NBC. The quality isn't great, but sometimes it's the only source. In general, you can just use a screenprint (Alt + PrintScreen on a PC) or your image editing software's screen capture utility if it has one. If you have trouble getting the video to capture (i.e. it comes out solid black), it's probably using a hardware acceleration layer separate from the desktop layer (I'm not aware of any browser or webcast protocols that use hardware acceleration, though) and disabling acceleration should fix it.--Hardvice (talk) 23:22, 18 April 2007 (EDT)
  • I believe the video you're talking about is Zeroes. I've actually screencapped the majority of both videos, and the images can be found here, in case you wanted to use them. — RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:32, 18 April 2007 (EDT)
