In chapter 1 of The Private, Barton yells towards Rachel Mills's Humvee, ordering her to search a woman and her car at the checkpoint. When Rachel doesn't come right away, Barton yells again for her to come. A few moments later, loud bangs ring out from gas canisters opening up and Barton collapses face down onto the ground along with most of the rest of the troops at the checkpoint.
The Agent
In chapter 2 of The Agent, Rachel Mills says that it is too soon after Barton to have another partner.
Faction Zero
In chapter 5 of Faction Zero, Rachel tells Claire about her commanding officer in Iraq, "not a real poetic type." Rachel recalls when they were getting ready to hand over a town to an Iraqi army unit, and the town's future was uncertain. The commanding officer said that the soldiers were "yesterday's angels, and now it was time to let go."
