That would be a perfect plot for suicide cause when Claire mentioned G.E.D Annie seemed off like she's jealous that Claire found a easier way to enter college while Annie did it the harder way but working hard in school. Annie seems like she's the type of person who hides her true emotions [example: suicidal thoughts].

It's possible for Gretchen to know Annie without Annie knowing her. - It would be very stupid of Gretchen to try solving Annie's supposed murder if she was the killer. + It would be the perfect plot. Gretchen killed Annie so she acts like she doesn't know so Claire won't get suspicious so Gretchen takes part in solving the murder. - Just wanting to take part in the so called investigation would attract unwanted attention. + Gretchen may know the risk. So she wouldn't care about unwanted attention. + Gretchen seemed to have become overly attached to Claire after finding out her name. It's possible that she already knew about Claire and so she killed Annie in order to get closer to Claire. - And why would she do that? + The death of Annie meant a vacancy in Claire's dorm room.
