She has a mind of her own to choose to commit suicide, to see if she has a power or whatever her motives are. - If she was stupid, she wouldn't have gotten to college, and wouldn't "look down" to Claire for getting in only with a G.E.D. + She can be stupid enough to commit suicide and enter college. She can be the type of person that's having a stressful life but still is doing whatever it takes to undo her stress. So she enters college. But things get harder for her in college so she commits suicide. - Classes were still quite in the beginning, not enough time for things to get that much harder. + Before college. Since it's a new semester.
