Adding New Portals

Portals on Heroes Wiki are normally implemented using wikitables. The standard format is to use table s of width 75%. Tables should be organized alphabetically, keeping the same number of cells/row (five cells/row is standard for portals featuring individual cast, characters or crew; 4 cells/row for other portals). For tables where keeping the same number of cells/row is not possible, a subtable with a custom width percentage is used to center the last row(s) of cells as appropriate. It is sometimes better to have one less number of cells/row for a table than to end up with a single cell on the last row.

Templates

To make things easier, there are two main templates used to standardize the presentation of portals, PortalCharacter and PortalPlotPoints. The first is used for portals depicting individual characters, cast and crew. The latter is for everything else including groups, events and things.

Adding to a Character, Cast or Crew Portal

The PortalCharacter template is standard use for these portals.
When adding a new cell to these portals, be sure to adhere the following guidelines:

  • Place the new cell alphabetically.
  • Use the following variables to compete the cell as fully as possible:
{{PortalCharacter|size=|image=|link=|text=|smalltext=|nonlinktext=}}
  • There should be five cells per row.
  • If there is more than five cells in a given row, move the last cell of that row to be the first cell of the next row.
Change this... ...to this.
{| width=75%
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell A
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell B
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell C
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell D
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell E
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell F
|-
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell G
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell H
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell I
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell J
{| width=75%
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell A
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell B
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell C
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell D
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell E
|-
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell F
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell G
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell H
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell I
| {{PortalCharacter}} Cell J
  • If the last row has less than five cells, enclose the last row in a new table within the original table by adding {| and |} :
|-
{|width=PERCENT%
| {{PortalCharacter}}
|}
|}
  • Change PERCENT to 15 if there is only one cell in the row (or remove width= altogether).
  • Change PERCENT to 30 if there are two cells in the row.
  • Change PERCENT to 45 if there are three cells in the row.
  • Change PERCENT to 60 if there are four cells in the row.
  • Change PERCENT to 90 if there are six cells in the row.
  • If there are five cells in the row, remove the {| and |} from the last row.
  • Always preview the portal before saving so to not unecessarily crowd the history with edits.

Adding to an Events, Groups or Things Portal

The PortalPlotPoints template is standard use for these portals.
When adding a new cell to this portal, be sure to adhere the following guidelines:

  • Place the new cell alphabetically.
  • Use the following variables to compete the cell as fully as possible:
{{PortalPlotPoints
|image=<!-- Filename of image, e.g. Activating_evolution.jpg -->
|link=<!-- Article title of episode, e.g. Activating Evolution -->
|catlink=<!--OPTIONAL link to use when portal is included in a category-->
|text=<!-- OPTIONAL Alternate link text -->
|nonlinktext=<!-- OPTIONAL Additional text outside link (used to even lengths)-->
|deceased=<!-- Set to "true" for deceased locations and groups -->
|width=<!-- OPTIONAL Width of cell.  Defaults to 150px}}
}}
  • There should be four cells per row.
  • If there are more than four cells in a given row, move the last cell of the row to be the first cell of the next row.
Change this... ...to this.
{| width=75%
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell A
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell B
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell C
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell D
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell E

| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell F
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell G

| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell C
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell D
|-
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell E
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell F
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell G
| {{PortalPlotPoints}} Cell H
  • If the last row has less than four cells, enclose the last row in a new table within the original table by adding {| and |} :
|-
{|width=PERCENT%
| {{PortalPlotPoints}}
|}
|}
  • Change PERCENT to 19 if there is only one cell in the row (or remove width= altogether).
  • Change PERCENT to 38 if there are two cells in the row.
  • Change PERCENT to 56 if there are three cells in the row.
  • If there are four cells in the row, remove the {| and |} from the last row.
  • Always preview the portal before saving so to not unecessarily crowd the history with edits.
