Deputy Gill was the ranking deputy at the Cainan, GA, sheriff's office, and worked under the command of the Cainan sheriff. He was familiar with Jeremy Greer's obsession with death and killing small animals. When Noah tries to get the boy released, Gill reads from Jeremy's journal to show Jeremy's proclivities. Later, Deputy Gill takes Jeremy from his cell and out into a back alley. He and another local man attach chains to Jeremy's feet and prepare to drag him to his death. Gill dares Jeremy to "take his best shot" but Jeremy refuses to use his power to kill the man. The deputy tells Jeremy that he's not one of them and then kills him. What happens when the sheriff confronts Gill over his obvious involvement in the boy's death, is not known. Later, Samuel destroys the station building during business hours and Gill is presumed dead.
