Promoting Whom?

  • I noticed that Category:Promotional Images is being added to any image that is promotional for an actor or actress (eg something from a press kit). The text of this category states The following images are promotional images used to promote Heroes. which is a subset of all the promotional images. Do we want to differentiate the two, or just change the def. of this category? --Orne 14:55, 5 January 2007 (EST)
    • It's actually vaguely important that we not use it on just any image we grab from another website. Otherwise, it's pretty meaningless. I'd say anything from press kits, anything from NBC.com, and anything from the 9th Wonders galleries is promotional within the current definition.

Stuff from IMdB is more complicated: headshots are definitely promotional, but not necessarily used to promote Heroes. But not all images from IMdB are actor headshots; some are professional photos from events, some are user-uploaded captures from other shows and movies, etc. I almost think we'd be better off with a separate IMDb source template that notes that the original source of the image cannot be confirmed.--Hardvice (talk) 15:07, 5 January 2007 (EST)
      • I agree - when I started adding to the category, it seemed everything and its dog had the promotional disclaimer. I definitely vote for a "Template:IMDb source", and keep this category strictly Heroes-related. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 15:14, 5 January 2007 (EST)
        • OK. I added template:image-imdb. It makes it more clear that it's not necessarily a Heroes-related promotional image. It still puts them in this cat, though. We can either take the auto-cat out, or change the category description to be more generic.--Hardvice (talk) 15:54, 5 January 2007 (EST)
          • Looks good. Should we make a cat for "IMDb Images"? Or maybe it should just autocat to "Cast and Crew Images". I definitely think it should not autocat to "Promotional Images" - I like the idea of this category being just pics put out by NBC, and other Heroes-related promos. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 17:00, 5 January 2007 (EST)
            • Probably an IMDb category. It'd be nice to know what's from there.--Hardvice (talk) 17:31, 5 January 2007 (EST)
    • {{image-promotional}} is a generic template for promotional images whether they specifically promote Heroes or not. I think the category description is too specific to be honest. So in my opinion one of two things should happen:
      1. The category description should be changed so it's not Heroes specific. This would make the most sense given the general name of the category.
      2. If the category is only going to refer to images meant to promote Heroes then I think it should not be auto-included in {{image-promotional}} since Heroes-specific promotional images will only be a subset of all the possible images marked with that template.
      • If there's value in specifically categorizing Heroes-specific promotional images, then I'd suggest using a different template. Maybe a {{image-heroespromotional}} that transcludes {{image-promotional}} but also includes a "Heroes Promotional Images" category afterwards. But I dont know if there's value in distinguishing. • I tend to agree. As long as the source is acknowledged, I don't see the value in distinguishing NBC/Heroes promotions from others (with the exception of IMDb images, which, as noted above, aren't always promotional). I think the category should match the template, not vice-versa.--Hardvice (talk) 23:07, 5 January 2007 (EST)
        • I don't know why, but it really irks me to have Heroes-promo images mixed with just cast images from their websites. I like the idea of a separate template for non-Heroes promotional images. The only thing I'd suggest is that we leave {{image-promotional}} as a Heroes-promo template, and the new template for general (non-Heroes) promotion should be called something like {{image-promo}}. This way, we wouldn't have to change so many of the templates - just a handful of non-Heroes images. - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:10, 5 January 2007 (EST)
          • Ok, I'm going to "go there". :) Why does it irk you? What's the value in distinguishing between them? (Mostly playing devil's advocate here). (Admin 00:02, 6 January 2007 (EST))
          • That's fine, but {{image-promotional}} vs. {{image-promo}} sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The template name should give a better clue as to which is which.--Hardvice (talk) 23:16, 5 January 2007 (EST)
            • Good point. How's {{image-NonHeroesPromotional}}? Or do we scrap the whole idea altogether? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 23:34, 5 January 2007 (EST)

Ugh!

Okay, I tried to remove some of the images from this category (images that are not Heroes-centric promotional images). But I forgot that the {{image-promotional}} automatically puts the pic in the category. I see three options:

  1. manually turn off the auto category addition on select pictures (is this possible?)
  2. just let a few pics slide in the category, thought they're not necessarily promoting Heroes
  3. change the {{image-promotional}} tag to something else.

Thoughts? - RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 22:44, 5 January 2007 (EST)

See my comment above. :) I think the solution to that may also solve this. (Admin 22:58, 5 January 2007 (EST))
