The Private
In chapter 2 of The Private, two hours after members of the officer's squad found Rachel Mills and Jim on the run in Iran, the Special Forces lieutenant meets with them where they are resting between two boulders. The officer explains to Rachel and Jim that the squad is supposed to rescue them from the main facility. Jim notes that they've already escaped from that facility, but the officer just repeats that now they are going to rescue them. Rachel understands what the officer means, noting that they will do a lot of damage on the way. The lieutenant then confirms Rachel's thoughts, saying that they are their get-out-of-jail-free card for political fallout.
In chapter 3 of The Private, the lieutenant talks with Rachel Mills at length and tells her different things about himself, including that his name is Sam. The officer informs her that he was born in Syria and grew up in Cleveland. He adds that his parents were originally from Iran, and claims that he was still in high school when he decided his options were either to spend his life getting shaken down at airport checkpoints or to enlist. Sam complains about spending so much time wandering the wildernesses of the Middle East, looking for bad guys, but Rachel can tell he loves his job even if it might kill him.
The contents of the compound Sam and his men are to destroy seem to scare them more than the Iranian army base in the distance. Rachel learns that they had never gotten too close to the facility, though they had stopped a truck once. Sam warns Rachel and Jim that he has never seen Iranian forces on this side of town, but expects them to come quickly when their charges go off so they should be ready to run.
Sam then leads the Special Forces squad in sneaking down to the compound. The squad takes out the sentries, but do not see someone exit a hidden door around the corner of the front entrance and Rachel and Jim cannot warn them. The squad takes positions around the front entrance and Sam grabs the entrance's handle, and then he and the other squad members disappear in a white flash and chest-rattling boom.
Rachel and Jim approach Sam's body and confirm his death. Rachel takes some of the gear off Sam's body, including the explosive charges. She then heads inside by herself to complete the squad's mission.
Notes
- In chapter 2 of The Private, Rachel and Jim encounter four men that turn out to be U.S. Special Forces. However, it is not clarified as to whether Sam was one of those four men.
